《The Rise of the Humans (An Apocalyptic Litrpg)》Chapter 6

After another few minutes of talking, our group went back on to the road, but after a while of talking, and swapping experiences, we descended into silence. Personally, I started wondering who out of my friends and family had survived. Dad is in France on a business trip. Hopefully, it’s better there. Trying to convince myself was easy, All I had to do was ignore all evidence that said otherwise. That was how I coped with most things, I just pretended like they were all okay.

After a long time of walking, I needed something to do. I pulled up my status.

HOW CANE HE USE THE MAGIX??!?!?!! SOMEONE TELL THE DEVELOPERS HE CAN USE MAGIC!!!! WHY IS EVERYONE TYPING IN CAPS?!?!?!

Looking over the stats, I was pleased with my stats, except for my strength. The human average was going up at a quick rate as people levelled up and lowly levelled people died. Speed was the stat that seemed to be the most important in the early game, as the average was very high. I assumed that it showed that people were running away from threats and that the slower people were killed by the monsters as they couldn’t outrun them. I was glad to see that more people were watching my stream, and after reading the comments the reason was clear.

I decided to experiment with magic since I had no idea how it worked, or how to use it. First, I tried to create a small fireball when the rest of the group wasn’t looking. After concentrating for a long time, all I managed to do was heat up my hand. When I touched my head with the heated up hand, I accidentally burned my forehead a little bit. A few minutes later, I tried to do the same, but with ice. Once again, I managed to cool down my hand but not do much else. My head started to throb. I tried to go colder. I managed to go a bit further before my head started to feel like it was being torn in two and I was forced to stop. After a small break, the headache got better. Next, I tried lifting a large sign that was toppled over behind us. It stayed still. I tried lifting a small rock and pictured it floating an inch of the ground. It started to rise and stopped an inch off the ground.

Looking ahead, I saw that I was starting to fall behind the group.

“You okay?” Sara asked looking legitimately concerned.

“Yeah, fine. It’s just a headache.” I said as I caught up. They looked at me as if they didn’t believe me, but there was no reason to pressure me about it. I caught up to the group, deciding that I would wait for my headache to stop before I tried using magic again.

A few hours later, I still had a headache, but it was very mild. We only had three miles to go until we arrived at our land. We were following a single road, the rest of the way. It had only started to dawn on me how bad things were. While normally I might pretend like everything is okay, the reminders were everywhere. The streets were deserted. The buildings we had passed were either boarded up or had the doors wide open and looked completely empty.

We had started to leave society with two miles left to go. The buildings had turned into trees being cut through by the single road. When I looked up, I thought I saw something in the distance.

“Hey, um… guys, what is that?” I said, pointing. The rest of the group squinted their eyes and started swearing.

“Knight of doom, level 15. It’s going to be here in about ten seconds. Everyone, get ready.” Those of us with swords went to the front. When the knight reached us and attacked, we managed to block or dodge. Two arrows hit the knight, but it continued on as if nothing had happened. By this point, most of us were starting to get tired. I realised that Emily was tiring quickly. The knight noticed it too as it started to focus on Emily. We all tried to attack the knight, but it was as if the knight knew where we were going to attack it. Emily must have had an extremely low Endurance stat as soon, she was barely able to stop the knight’s attacks. All the others were getting tired. We were going to lose the battle. Emily took another step back, off the road. Then, when trying to step back again, her foot caught a tree root, and she fell. The knight was about to kill her. There was only one thing I could do. I put my hand out and concentrated. I imagined fire burning my hands, fire burning the knight, fire igniting gas blowing the gas up.

In my hand was a ball of flame. I was aware of my group turning to look at me but I didn’t concentrate on that. I concentrated on throwing the ball at the knight. Time seemed to slow down as the knight turned to look at the flames. The ball struck the knight in the chest and the ball exploded. While the fireball did some damage to the knight, the explosion was what did the real damage. The knight fell backwards, dying. Dying but still alive. It fell beside where Emily lay and drove its black sword into her. Pain erupted in my head. Then everything went black.
