《Personal Agency》Interlude One: Cathode

INTERLUDE ONE: Cathode
An old television blurs to life. It’s one of those old cathode ray boxes that are deeper than they are wide and could probably kill you if it fell on your head. The screen is covered in moving bars of static and the TV box is humming and the audio sounds deep-fried. It’s a television from an era where televisions were just real shit, is the point. Just a dogshit old teevee.
It’s playing a black and white program, one that is made incoherent by the visual noise. Something in the box is broken. But then the static clears and it’s showcasing a title screen, a set of black words in a fanciful font embossed over a grey background.
Just Another Day At The Agency
We cut to someone walking through a comedic series of doors and checkpoints, ones that get across a sense of overhyped and plentiful security in a way that makes it lighthearted and facetious. It’s exactly the opposite of an airport. A man in a shabby suit steps through into a 1950’s style hotel lobby, looking confused. He moves his head around in exaggerated motions and then pauses for a long moment as if waiting for a laugh track to kick in. It doesn’t. Not that he notices, of course. This is not performed in front of a live studio audience and this nameless buffoon has no idea that it will not be added in post.
He makes his way to the front desk and speaks to the receptionist, who looks very much like a receptionist. She motions at a sign that reads:
All Platonic Objects must be Declared and Kept At Reception for the Duration of your Visit
“Oh no,” the man says. “I’m here for the uh, the job interview?” He straightens his tie and looks hopeful. There’s another pause where the monochromatic couple stare at the camera, waiting for a laugh track that does not occur. Not sure why. It wasn’t even a joke.

“You must be here to talk to Agent X,” the receptionist eventually says, slowly dialing an old rotary telephone. “Mr X? We’ve got an applicant here to see you. No, he still has all the relevant pieces.”
“Pieces?”
“Well, all your fingers are still on, aren’t they?,” she asks, covering the telephone’s mouthpiece with her hand.
“Golly! I didn’t know that was a requirement!”
There is another very distinct lack of a laugh track, though that does not stop our leading man from stopping until the laughter that isn’t there dies down. The scene cuts to the interview.
Our boy is talking to, one must presume, Agent X. It’s a very harsh cut and there’s no introductions. We are already mid-way through the interview.
“I have to say,” says our clown, “I wasn’t expecting you to all be named ‘Agent X’ and ‘Agent Y’. It’s all very, uh, that movie with Will Smith, isn’t it? Men in Black?”
This grotesque anachronism gives him another chance to wait a few extra seconds, anticipating the laugh track. Again, it is not there. And it’d be weird if it was because, again, it’s not funny. Nothing here is ever funny.
This show was never aired but if it did it would not be popular.
The screen falls into static for a second and then we are cut to Agent X’s face as he talks and tells our boy, our lad, our stupid moron actor, that they do not use codenames. It is just that true names are on a need-to-know basis and you don’t need to know!
Pause. Whoever was supposed to edit the laugh tracks into all these spaces surely deserves to be fired. This puts them above the show’s writer, who will get the firing squad instead.

Agent X asks the main character of the show why they want to join the Agency.
“Well, to be honest with you sir, I just want to know what’s real!”
Now the laugh track is here and it never stops. And the actors never start again, maintaining the pause with rictus grins. The camera slowly pulls away from the set as if on smooth tracks and it just keeps getting further away, revealing the set to be an ever-wider ever-larger warehouse of some sort. One that just keeps being revealed to be bigger and bigger and bigger until the set is just a speck of light in the darkness and the laugh track never ever stops.
Someone else turns the television off.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)

Dragon Knight Prophecy
A hero, a dragon, and a love that breaks all bounds. A fantasy story of a man trying to save his homeland from a terrible war by completing a prophecy nobody fully understands. To complete his mission he needs a dragon but the road to the dragon’s lair goes horribly wrong, and when he finally faces the beast he stands alone. A deeply emotional story that deals with pain, regret, betrayal, and failure. Despite it all somehow our heroes discover they need each other and slowly come together. With the help of some dedicated friends they realize their love is special, and go on to forge a new world befitting their unusual union. If you like dragons, romance, a little magic and a lot of war this might be for you. This story eventually evolves into a very loving harem, where the women rely on and love one another just as much as they love our hero. Please note: I am an amateur writer who started this story as a form of therapy while my wife was teetering on the brink of death. Thankfully she survived but by that point I was so committed to telling this story I couldn’t stop. I learned a great deal about writing over time but I am afraid my early chapters were very rough. I have since gone back and begun to edit them, applying the lessons learned and cleaning them up. I hope you will still enjoy the story, as I love sharing it and I can’t imagine a better use of my time. Sexual content.. In seven books I have written two sex scenes, but one of them will be highly edited once I reach them with my rewrite. Overall I imply our characters are sharing their love but don't go into any great detail as to how. So if sexual content bothers you, it is only lightly touched on twice.
