《Dreamland invasion》Chapter 001: Dear Humans

"Hey fatass, how about you stop eating and roll away, huh?"

Well, this is nothing new. At least Ray tried being creative with his insults this time around. But it still seems like he can't think any further than my bodyweight.

I look in the direction of the voice. With him, are his two best friends, Jack and Daniel. To my surprise, there is one more person. I sigh.

"Hey, why do you have to be so mean? There are still other free tables."

The girl was right, there are still other tables with four free seats. But that wasn't even the problem. Even without her being there, Ray had still acted the same way, even though there were still three chairs free at my table.

"Don't worry Rose, he is happy to make space for us. Besides, this table has the best view."

I look around in case something happened without me realizing it. But no, just like the moment I chose this table, it stands right in the middle of the school cafeteria. The only view you could get here are other people.

I look at the girl. Rosalin Tyler. For a short moment, I felt the rare feeling of pity for Ray. It seems like he had become her "boyfriend". It is a well-known story, enough that even I know about it. That girl changes boyfriends on a monthly basis, and it never ends well for the boy. If you believed the rumors, one even killed himself.

I sigh again and stand up. I don't care about his insults, but Ray isn't completely wrong. Even for my obese self, I have already eaten a lot more than normal. It's because it's pretty rare that the school cafeteria has tasty food.

While I take care of my tray, I think about what I should do with what time is left. The break is still long from over, so there is still plenty of time to read. Though my favorite place, the bench, hidden between a group of trees, seems to be out of question.

There are still roughly twenty minutes left, but my next class and my locker were I left my book, are on the third floor. My bodyweight of almost two-hundred kilograms never bothered me much, but climbing to the third floor twice in such a short time is still a little much.

"Hey asshole, be careful where you are going!"

Waking up from my thoughts, I look at the person who just ran into me. He should know that he is entering the cafeteria through the exit, shouldn't he? Then again, knowing and caring are very different things in the end. I sigh for the third time and step aside.

There is that saying that claims, every time a person sighs, they lose a bit of their happiness. I very much doubt it, but it is true that I sigh a lot, and not only happiness, but I have little emotions in general.

I first really noticed this when my grandmother died and I pretty much didn't care about it.

At first, I was worried about it and went to a psychologist, but after half a year of treatment, I only learned three things. I learned how to analyze my state of mind. I learned that eating and reading are my outlets. And I learned that I didn't care.

Life is a lot easier when you don't care. I get bullied, but I don't care. I'm pretty much incapable to feel empathy, but I don't care. I'm severely overweight, but I don't care... Okay, I care a little when there are stairs.

While I was lost in thoughts, I already reached the stairs. The school building is a very old one, and typical for buildings such as this, the stairwell is unnecessarily large and the ceilings high. There would be no problem at all for five people to climb the stairs, side by side, even with me included.

As always with such stairs, you could see the floor from the side when you walked up. I shivered. It always made me a little uneasy to see how thick, or thin, the floor I would stand on is.

I really had to write another complaint to the office. I had done so already three times and my locker was still on the third floor. I really don't like stairs.

When I finally reached the third floor, I saw a group of people standing in front of my locker.

"Could you let me through, please? You are standing in front of my locker."

"Huh? Get your books later, man.", the boy answered and proceeds to ignore me.

Why do I have to meet so many idiots today? Well, it doesn't really matter, I can still read on my smartphone after all.

I walk down the corridor to a small group of chairs that I know to stand in a small, hidden corner.

Just as I pull out a chair and try to sit down, something happens.

"Well, this is interesting.", I mumble as my hand glides through the translucent blue window that appeared in front of my eyes.

If this was some kind of prank, it was a very elaborate one using technology that doesn't exist in any practical form. Just from the fact that it was following my sight perfectly, I could tell that this wasn't some kind of hologram.

Neither could it be some hallucination. It was way to perfect for that. And while there were many problems with my mind, hallucinations weren't amongst them. Neither had I taken any drugs, I didn't do that in general. Maybe something was in my food?

I looked down the corridor to the group standing in front of my locker. They were in a commotion and each of them had a blue rectangle in front of their faces. Definitely no hallucination.

Of course, I was reading a lot, so I had already a guess as to what was going on. Still, it was better to cover my bases before I started to run around and steal stuff.

Slowly, text started to appear on the blue rectangle.

Dear Humans,

I am very sorry that I have to inform you about the upcoming invasion of our world by foreign forces. We, the management, want to sincerely apologize for allowing this oversight. Sadly, the degree as to which we can interfere in this conflict is severely limited as this would allow the opposing party to act in a similar manner.

But please don't worry, contingencies have already been implemented to maximize the effect of the little support we can give. Thus we ask you, to work together in stemming the coming tide, so that humanity may remain on the victorious side.

As long as humanity beliefs, there is hope.

Yours truly,

God of public relations

When I finished reading, the box receded in the corner of my vision and the text changed.

Well, this wasn't how it would go usually.

I looked at the group again. The commotion had grown. I could be pretty sure that at least something was going on. Even if I behaved strangely, there shouldn't be a problem if this turned out to be some strange experiment.

According to the message, whatever was coming was called an invader. Even if I didn't trust the message, there was a chance of encountering something hostile and I couldn't be sure where they would be coming from. For all I knew, they could randomly appear right in front of me. First of all, I had to be able to protect myself.

It had been barely a minute. If I assumed that no threats would appear until the countermeasures were implemented, I had little time left. Of course, that was me being optimistic. An army of goblins might already be storming the schoolyard or some mechanical assassin was ready to jump me from the shadows.

I didn't have to think for long. The only place I could think of was the school's basement.

As fast as I could without risking to tire myself out or injuring myself, I made my way down the stairs.

A last look had shown me that the group in front of the lockers was still discussing what they should do.

I had just arrived in the basement, and it was already at seventy-two percent.

Luckily, there was only one other group of three down here. Already, when I went down the stairs I could hear them talk. They were heading to the right where all the outdoor sports equipment was kept. If I had to guess, they were probably after the javelins that were stored there. Not a bad choice.

While I went left, I could hear them have a heated discussion behind my back.

The question was: Which is superior, sword, or spear?

In my opinion, the answer was obvious if the current situation was in any way as I guessed. Both had to high of a skill threshold and a spear is too unwieldy to be useful without any training.

I grinned as I looked at the treasure standing abandoned in a corner. An old fire ax. I would have preferred a spear for the greater range, but while slightly old and not meant for fighting, the ax was at least high quality. Any other weapon I may be able to procure within the school would be something makeshift, and I would prefer if my weapon didn't suddenly break during the fight.

As for the javelins, they weren't meant for fighting but for sports.

Then, I heard a scream. No, that would be wrong. Many, very loud screams. Both, human and non-human.

Suddenly, a new window appeared. Though, appeared not in the classical sense. It appeared in my mind, no longer blocking my vision.
