《The Overzealous Healer》1.03 - Mercy

Kazerus took Timo back to the sharecropper longhouse, where the slaves reside. The house is one elongated room, ceiling beams curved, and walls packed with sticks like a beaver dam. The center has an old hearth that is rarely cleaned, polluting the lodge with smoke and dust. Outside the house, the constant foot traffic renders the dirt bare, and leftover tools and firepits litter the premises.
That morning, Timo got whipped as an example to the others.
The next day, Larko The Jerk lit a section of the pumpkins on fire as a 'welcome back' gift. Timo drained water from another quadrant to quench it, killing off nascent corn stalks. But even though he doesn't use fire magic, he's the troublemaker and took the blame. Whipped for going missing, and whipped for trying to save the farm. He should've broken Larko's leg and left him burning in his own hell.
Finally, on a morning with no major incidents, Timo catches the supervisor, tugging on the sleeve. Before they head out to the beanfields, he asks, "Can I work for the butchers?"
Harcus scoffs. "No."
"Why not?"
"You’re assigned to my jurisdiction. Besides, you’re too young, and I will not tolerate deviant excuses." If an adult is unable to handle a mere 9-year-old, how would that look to the bossman?
Running away as usual, Timo hid in the wheat fields, pretending to be the Lead Architect of the Imperial Court, tasked to make an amazing maze for the citizens. He mowed a path, discovering a litter of wild piglets. The hog mother leapt into the air and snorted, commanding her piglets to disperse into the golden prairie.
The family got away except for one wobbly runt. Its clumsy movement excited him, and he reached over and plucked the piglet off the ground. It squealed louder and struggled to pry out of Timo's hand. Its precious fate was his.

He could go back to the others and show them the piglet. It was very cute, after all. Then he remembered, he overheard a group of farmers who always talked about exterminating hogs, as they were pests that ate crops.
Who were the pests in his life? All the stupid kids, like Lazy-Weed, who didn't understand the idea of mutual cooperation. Why was he always singled out?
He looked at the piglet. Should he show mercy? What is mercy?
If he released it now, the mother would reject it for wielding the scent of the enemy. It would be abandoned for being a liability to the family. What more cruelty was there than to let it die lonely?
Using both hands, Timo twisted the head and the body, wringing the piglet. Bruises formed all over the runt's torso. He held it until it became very still, then threw the corpse into the ground, and he rubbed the blood off his hands with soil and friction.
He went back to the others. Larko and the boys were working on breaking an empty lot. With their hoes, they drew giant military diagrams of imaginary battles, sowing seeds at the hard, endless dirt. They threw seed bullets at each other, going, "You’ve been hit with a critical shot! Your arm falls off!" Someone would retort, "My anti-focus barrier nullifies it!"
When they saw Timo, they sprayed the seeds at him, saying things like, "Sorcerer!" and "Dirtsucker!" Before Timo could breathe a word, everyone put up faces of disgust and ran away.
What's wrong with these kids? They gobble scraps of steak like starving coyotes, and lick gravy off their fingers. No one is innocent from the cycle of destruction.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. Apollyon's Curse
Within the pages of folklore and fantasy, tales of people who chase after the dream of eternity, of living forever, rarely find a happy ending. They are either struck by the grim truth of reality, give up, and return to mortality or face a ghastly realization of their wishes. The latter often the worse fate, as they come to realize, only far too late, that what they sacrificed was worth far more than the time they gained. Ultimately, the common thread in these stories is that “immortality is as much a curse as it is a blessing”. People either realize it early and give up or are doomed to inevitably face its consequences. In the world Enrich lives in, that saying does hold merit. Every pathway towards eternal life has shackles of its own. They bring those high above down to the ground, evening the playing field. It is thanks to these fundamental laws that ambitious mortals are able to defy the heavens and achieve immortality themselves. The variety of methods result in each of these bindings varying in intensity and degree of freedom. Enrich’s path doesn't break this trend. Though, after what he did to himself, most wouldn’t even consider him a living thing anymore. On the day of his ascension, a world’s worth of souls were melted and recast. On that day, the human’s path had reached its conclusion, recast into Apollyon. An artifact, a weapon, is eternal, after all. As for the curse? The payment will be made, as it must. So why not offload the curse to someone else? Mortals throw their lives away for all manner of petty reasons, noble or otherwise, especially in desperation. Eventually, someone will be willing to foot the bill. Most will if given the chance. The bait is far too tempting, after all. Power, status, knowledge. All at their fingertips. If only they say “yes”. And Apollyon is very willing to help any lost souls. If they give up everything in return, of course.
