《Storm of the End》Chapter VII.I: No Time To Cry

Aaron stumbled towards his mother.
I couldn't stop him. I couldn't move at all.
This... This just wasn't fair. It wasn't right.
Aaron put his hands up to Jessica's face, and stared into the dead eyes of the woman who had given birth to him and nourished and cared for him for the twelve years of his life on this earth.
The screams rang out again, tearing through the air around us. He didn't even notice. I still couldn't move.
Then the tears started to flow from Aaron's face again, and he wailed out to his mother.
I managed to recover a bit from the shock, and sluggishly moved towards Aaron. I moved so slowly, my body was so defeated, that it felt like time was going backwards. I paid no heed to the other corpses, my gaze rested on Aaron holding the corpse that had been his mother in his arms. Holding Jessica.
I knelt down next to him, and I knew that there was no way for me to comfort him now. I waited for the tears to come in torrents down my face, but was surprised to feel only two, one in each eye. Why?
It was then that I finally realized that as soon as I woke up this morning, as soon as I felt the rain and wind, as soon as I saw those jets fly into the city, I already knew that Jessica was dead. I had already wept for her in my heart. I clung to some impossible hope that we would find her, but deep down I knew that it was impossible. I realized that I hadn't come here to find Jessica; my whole reason for coming into the storm was to find answers... to find out what was going on. I had used Jessica as an excuse.

You idiot, I told myself. You piece of trash! You put Aaron's life in danger to find your answers, and even now you know nothing! And now Aaron has to see Jessica like this! I cursed and cursed myself a million times over. How could I have done something like this?! You both might not even make it out of here alive!
I heard a crash come from below, and the screams echoed through the building again. We had to go, oh God, we had to leave Jessica here. How was I going to tell that to Aaron?
How could I have done this to him?!
I tried to say his name, but my voice came out as an incomprehensible mutter.
I spoke up, "Aaron!"
He didn't hear me; he still stared into Jessica's eyes. Oh God... he had her eyes. They were that same shade of deep blue. I hadn't noticed how similar they were... until now. Now the tears came flowing down.
There was a commotion going on downstairs: they were coming.
We didn't have time to cry right now.
Choking back my tears, I grabbed Aaron by the shoulder and shook him, "Aaron. We have to leave right now. Something's coming. The same things that did... this. We can't stay here."
He looked up at me, but didn't move. I wrapped my arms around him.
"I'm sorry Aaron..." my voice was cracking as I spoke, "I'm sorry you had to see this, I shouldn't have brought you here! I'm so, so sorry..." I sobbed, my voice quivered, "But we have to go. We have to go, or we will both die. I'm sorry... Oh God, Aaron, I'm so sorry..."
The noises grew louder. They became increasingly more frequent. Aaron turned to his mother one last time, and so did I. I'd never see her again; we'd never be together again. I took in everything that had been done to her, and burnt it into my brain for me to remember forever.

Her legs had been cut away almost down to the bone, her torso was covered in huge gashes, one of her arms was missing and the other had a chunk torn out of it as if something had bitten it off. Her face had been untouched for the most part, except for a trail of blood that went from the corner of her eye to her neck. It looked like she was crying tears of blood.
Something caught my eye next to her... it was her wedding ring. I snatched it up and put it in my pocket. This would be my memento of her.
Jessica... I'm sorry.
As the screams rang out again, my pain and sorrow was transmogrified into boiling hatred. Hatred towards the creatures that were making their way towards us. I would make them pay.
I didn't know how, or when, but I would make them pay! But now, I'd only get myself killed. I'd only cause Aaron more pain.
Aaron stood up.
"Let's go," he whispered.
His voice sounded completely lost and swallowed up by despair. It was my own fault for letting things turn out this way, I should have been more careful.
But now was not the time to regret; now was the time to run. I heard the noises reach the stairs. We didn't have much time.

A World Forgotten
***This story will contain lite-litrpg elements, mainly character pages and a town page. There will also be settlement building and adventuring, missteps and achievements. But one thing it definitely won’t have is a harem. Nor will it have an overpowered MC. Contains mild cursing.*** ***feel free to critique my writing and offer input. This is my first venture into writing. I've always enjoyed litrpg/gamelit books. I feel like I write how I talk, so it may be a little different. You won't hurt my feelings if you see something wrong or out of place! *** ***What follows is a condensed part of chapter 1. Enjoy!*** Drew Cooper is thrust into a new, unfamiliar world. Waking up in his sweats and t-shirt near what seems to be a forgotten path through some woods, he struggles coming to terms that he's no longer in his apartment. As he tries to cope with his new reality, he hears a horse coming down the path. He hides behind a nearby tree dreading what may happen next. As the horse approaches, he sees a man walking next to it. The horse is burdened with packs and gear. When the man nears, Drew nearly panics. He has a large sword strapped to his waist, obviously a fighter. He continues to hide as the man slowly passes only for the man to stop a dozen meters past his hiding spot. "You may as well come out, ya know. You weren't as well hidden as you thought," the man stated matter-of-factly, letting the horse’s reins go and putting his hand on the hilt of his sword. Slowly and scared for his life, Drew raised up and walked from behind the tree. "I-I'm sorry. I wasn't planning on attacking you. I-I don't know where I am. I heard your horse and hid. I didn't know what you'd do if you saw me. I'm sorry," he nervously blurted out. A minute passed. Then two. The man seemed interested with Drew and stepped closer, eyes squinting as if trying to see something. "What's that on your shirt? Is that. What is that? Is that, Pac-man?" The man was visibly shaken while pointing at me. Looking down at his t-shirt nervously, "Yea. Yea. I woke up here a few hours ago I think. 3 maybe 4 hours. I’ve just been sitting here. Where am I? What's going on?" Drew asked. "That's not important right now," the man replied. " What's important is where you're from. What year is it?" "What year? April something 2020. Why? What's going on?" Drew continued now worried. The man was taken aback. After a few moments, he seemed to calm himself some. The man sighed and looked at Drew in earnest. "Well, I've got good news and bad news for ya. Bad news is you're not on Earth anymore. Good news is you happened to run into me and not someone else. You’re either really lucky, or it’s fate we met in these woods, and I don’t believe in luck." The man continued to walk towards Drew while talking and put out his hand. "I'm John Mitchell from St. Louis or thereabouts. You’ve got nothing to be scared of by me. Walk with me and let’s talk."

Humanity's End
Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.
