《Bug Bytes》23. Smash Their Bloody Heads In

It's dark now. Rubbing my eyes, I see nothing but wheat. They weren't kidding about dropping me in the middle of a field.
As I sit up I feel something fall off my chest. In the dark its hard to find what it is. But waving my arms around I find, it's a piece of paper. Too dark to read, I stuff it in my pocket for later.
Starvation kicking in, and with no other options. I start eating dry raw wheat. It's a challenge getting it down, but it won't kill me.
After I've had my fill, and a few minutes to think. I figure I've no choice but to just pick a direction and start walking. It's that or sit in this field.
I eventually emerge from the field and spot a road. Again choosing a direction on a whim. It's not long before I find a farm house, likely belonging to the same person as this wheat field.
With no weapons on me I pray the house is empty. I would even if I had weapons, but more so without. Airing on the side of caution, I check the near by barn first.
The door is wide open. It's dark but I feel my way along the walls. The only thing of use I find is a pitchfork. Not a great option but better than nothing.
Now entering the house, it's even darker than the barn. I take very short and light steps. Trying to avoid making any noise. And listening closely for any zombies shuffling.
I feel around for drawers, searching through them. I find no candles and no matches. I make my way to the kitchen and run into the same problem.
I don't know how long I had been asleep in the field. Or in the car for that matter. Still feeling very tired. I don't know if its from lack of sleep. Or the drugs still in my system. I can get nothing done at this point. Weary and barely able to keep my eyes open. I had hoped to find a washroom or any other small room with a door I can lock. There doesn't seem to be one on this floor. So I lay on the nearest soft thing I can find and tell myself I'll sleep lightly, so nothing can sneak up on me.

"Who the hell are you?"
An old man with wild grey hair and overalls yells out. While pointing a flashlight in my face with one hand, and a gun with the other. I sit up quick my arms up, palms turned towards him.
"Levi sir."
"Well Levi, you best be getting out of here real quick."
"I'm sorry."
I say as I rush off the couch and towards the door. Leaving the pitchfork behind.
"I didn't think anyone was in here. I meant no harm honest."
I continue. My arms raised again.
"Could you just tell me where exactly I am?"
"You're in the wrong damn house, that's where. Now git."
I run out the door and back to the street. I don't stop running for another five minutes.
I need to figure out where the hell I am. And how to get back home. I guess I don't really have a home, but I need to get back to save Courtney, if she's still alive. And Germaine. There wasn't much food left in the apartment. She'll be stuck in there, no way down the stairs. Trapped and starving.
With no sense of direction I just keep walking. All seems hopeless. I found a good size rock beside the road that I'm carry as my only form of defence at the moment.
I see a zombie up ahead I could easily avoid. Instead I walk right over and bash it's head in. I do the same with another about an hour later.
The sun is starting to rise. I find a third zombie and just like the first to I take him out. Partly to let out some anger. Partly to check his pockets. The address on his ID says the city of Crestview.
Then I see another one. And other after only ten minutes after that. Both residents of Crestview as well. I realize as the number or zombies I'm seeing keeps increasing I must be getting close to the city.
Getting excited, I knew it was going to be Crestview, But I've never heard of this city before. I'm sure I'll be able to find a map in one of the gas stations. Then I can see just how far from home I really am.

I see a car up ahead. It's not the first I've seen. The past few have been locked. This one still has the driver sitting in the front seat. I don't know if I'll be able to figure out how to start it, but I do know at the very least, you need a key.
Approaching the car, It's clear the zombie is strapped in. Sitting there biting at me through the window, unable to get up. Or even open the door.
I try to open the door myself but it's locked. Smashing the window with the rock instead. It's awkward trying to beat the zombie with the rock. But after a few swings the threat is quickly nullified.
Reaching in to open the door from the inside. Then after it takes me a moment to figure out how to disconnect the strap. I pull the body out and leave it in the middle of the road.
Sitting down, the keys are still in the car. I turn the keys, the car makes a chugging noise for a few seconds then stops. I try a second time. Then a third. The same thing keeps happening. After the fourth attempt I give up. I check the compartments and search for anything useful. Nothing good as far as I can tell. No food, though I do find a bottle of water. unfortunately it's frozen.
I sit in the car for a few minutes and rest. Aside from the broken window it's a nice escape from the wind and snow. Thinking about the girls and feeling I shouldn't waste any time resting. I continue on walking forward.
It only takes a few minutes before I come across a gas station. There are a few cars parked in front. Excited I run in. Ready to kill any zombies I find. Take their keys and figure out which car they're for.
There's no one inside. The shelves are empty. Only dog food. It tastes awful, but I've had a few canned meats recently, I can't tell a difference between this and those.
Walking around the store while eating, I spot a rack of maps. Inhaling whats left as quick as possible I grab one. Then run over to the counter and spread it out.
I see Crestview, and I know I'm close to there. I search for my old community. It's further away then I'd like. There's a highway that will take me all the way there, I just need to go west. I can't tell the exact distance but there's 6 towns between here and there. If I don't find a car, this will take days.
Remembering the paper I had found on myself, I take it out of my pocket.
Hey Levi, it's Pharaoh again. (Spark Plug felt too hacky, so I'm trying out the whole Egyptian thing.)
I hope you survive until day light so you can get a chance to read this note. Sorry for drugging you, just had to make sure you were knocked out. Didn't want you trying anything once we untied you, ya know. Cause then I'd have to shoot you, and the whole trip would be a big waste of time.
I flip it over, there's more written on the back.
I'm just kidding. I wouldn't actually drive all the way out here just to drop you off in a field. Far too busy for that. No, truth is I would have just broke your legs and left you a few blocks away. But that can be such an unpleasant ordeal. And if I saw you dragging yourself around town, well I'd feel I need to put you out of your misery. But you were lucky. See, those generators I told you about. They're gas powered so I send my men out tapping all the stations, siphoning from all the cars. Gotta get it all before anyone else does right. So I'm out scouting for more stations. Can you believe we made it this far out already?
Good luck out there.

A Fractal Divide
Lesivar is a city in ascendancy. With recent innovations in magical crafting, the common people are experiencing a boom in comfort and wealth. The nobility, long used to being the stewards of knowledge and power, struggle to adapt to the new world in which they find themselves. A precarious balance has been maintained throughout, but forces stir beneath the surface threatening to send the city spiraling into chaos. This is my first attempt at writing anything longer than a short story, and I welcome any feedback or corrections. I'm posting this as I write, with each chapter going live upon completion. My current pace is about a chapter a day, which I expect to take my through the end of November. From there, I'm shooting for a chapter every two-three days until the book is completed, along with an editing pass of what is already up. I'm planning on three POV characters with unique insight into the story as it unfolds. Each chapter will contain only one POV. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
