《Respec Ted》Chapter 1 - Adeparturement
Advertisement
It all started in a dark damp room. It was messy, there was no floor in sight, as it was covered with filth. Trashbags, snacks, sodacans and meal boxes with crusty dried pieces and moldy wet parts, littered the room. This was a middle-aged gamer's apartment. His name was Ted and he had been living off an allowance provided by his family for years. He rarely spoke with anyone and the few conversations he held with his family members were requests for more money.
Video-game sounds rang in the room, smashing, growling and destructive noises followed by a victory symphony repeated throughout the day.
Ted, unaware of it being the last day in his apartment, was fighting a giant lizard as part of the main quest line in a new game he was trying out: DragonDive Online.
( Lvl 16 -Lizard King- ▨▨▨▨▨▨▨▨▨▨)
[Healthy, Leeching, Fire Resistance, Summoning Roar, Poisonous Presence]
DragonDive Online was a generic MMORPG. He had reached level 23 as a mage, and was considering dropping it. This was par for the course for him. Ted would find new video-games on a bi-weekly basis and never complete, or reach end-game in any of them.
Ted unleashed a final flaming barrage of conjured fireballs, bringing the Lizard King down. Sound effects blasted from his speakers, it was a horrible mix of overlapping music and sound effects fighting to be heard. He had gained a level from defeating the boss and the victory medley was competing with the level up medley creating a horrible mix of noise.
-You have gained level 24-
- 1 new Skill point to assign
- 5 new attribute points to assign
=You have defeated the Lizard King=
You have earned a new feat: Lizard Regicide.
Lizard Regicide:
Damage dealt to Lizard kin increased by 5%
Ted cringed and spoke his final thoughts on the game out loud, as if he was trying to convince himself to move on:
"This boss was also just waaay too easy.. too choreographed and too many safe areas.. Actually, his attacks all do so little damage; while I was dodging and weaving, I could probably have soaked his damage output."
He looted the Lizard King only to find a Rare Weapon for the Ranger class. It was useless to him, so he discarded it without hesitation.
"That's it, I am out! Why can't this game at least give me drops that I can actually use!" Ted's frustrations with the game didn't hold much water. He was overleveled and complained about the lack of difficulty. And yet, he wanted better loot to further increase his power.
The screen changed abruptly to the desktop. Ted had pressed Alt+F4 killing the DragonDive Online process. Without a moments rest, he began browsing the Internet for his next gaming experience. Ted preferred the MMO genre, he had a couple of times deviated with a singleplayer RPG or a Roguelike, but it wasn't fulfilling for him. The value of achieving victory relied on the chance of others noticing it. MMO's provided that link, people could see Ted and that was exciting. Despite that, Ted avoided interacting with other players and only did so when the gameplay required it.

Ted had stumbled on a webpage with a game that promises quite the elusive experience.
"What a scam... the procedural generation is probably just recolours of mobs with random selections of heads.." Ted let out with a deep sigh.
The advertising was very familiar to him, he had once spend his money on buying land and vehicles in a game, that supposedly would be like The Matrix, it was based on NFTs and cryptocurrency only for the game to never be made into more than tiles and images on a webpage. He still technically owned the NFTs and cryptocurrency associated with it, but, after development had stopped, it's value was practically zero.
"It mentions a Magician, a Knight and a Ranger. Three of the most generic classes for any fantasy setting and then says it has classes beyond my imagination, what a joke! I am pretty sure it doesn't have.. a Nailbender class! My imagination reigns supreme!"
His voice rang out followed by a stale silence. Other than Ted, only the ringing fans from his computer could be heard. With a gulp from his latest can of soda, Ted stared blankly at the screen, then let out another sigh.
"It is free to play.. and it does say I can start playing right away."
With that Ted decided to give it a shot, crumbled the can of soda and wrote down his email and password. Then clicked [ENTER], ready to play.
*ERROR - you have to select a class.*
"Ahh oops, I overlooked that." Ted threw the crumbled can on the floor and clicked [select your class]. A new window opened with three columns of classes portrayed using beautifully crafted imagery.

A Knight, in shining armour on his galant horse. A Ranger, riding a bear following his dog, a loyal companion. And lastly a Magician, hovering a few feet above the ground on a giant turtle seen swimming through the air.
"Knight, Ranger, Magician... what a joke, they only have those generic classes to select from! They couldn't even bother keeping the illusion up until I finished registering."
Ted nutched his finger on the scroll wheel to give the page a scroll down cementing his thoughts, but was met with a shocking discovery. There were more rows of classes below.
"Barbarian, Assassin, Druid" he kept scrolling and more rows of classes kept popping up.
"Paladin, Warrior, Diplomat, Missionary, Waxman, Reaper, Priest, Ninja, Samurai, Gunslinger, Farmer, Necromancer, Carpenter, Wrestler, Wrangler, Bard, Vampire, Charmer, Lobotomist, Politician, Candlemaker, Noble..."
More and more classes manifested before him causing wrinkles to slowly pile up on Ted's forehead.
"This is ridiculous! Even if I ignore the amount of work that has to go into creating all these classes I still have to ask why some are so specific. A Carpenter... Who would ever pick to be that! Also, if there are Diplomat and Politician classes, does that mean anyone else can't participate in governing? Wouldn't a Waxman always be inferior to a candlemaker.."
The chair creeked as Ted leaned back to take a breath from the intense revelation infront of him. He grabbed an open bag of chips from the floor and began munching on them, deep in thought.
"Surely these classes aren't actually in the game.. but.. they do have portraits for each of them in the same art style.. I guess I will try, but what should I even choose."
He scrolled some more while he tried to settle on a class, a part of him was delaying making a choice and had planned to finalize his decision once he hit the bottom of the page. More and more classes flew up through the screen and Ted grew impatient, he changed tactics and switched to middle-click and moving the mouse down to speedily go through all the classes. The website began chuking, it couldn't keep up, yet it kept loading more classes with no end in sight, as if they were generated on the spot.
"Whatever..." Ted let go with a loose breath "why am I even investing so much into choosing a class, it's all fake anyways. Why do I even have to choose one while signing up on the website?"
MMORPG's usually let players choose a class when creating a character rather than when creating their account. he had not even downloaded or installed Mayhem of the Macrocosm. It would also mean he would have to create another email to try out another class.
"For a game that promises endless possibilities and choice it stupidly locks players into a single class.. How are we supposed to figure out what is most fitting for us!" Ted stopped scrolling and spun around in his chair instead, a habbit of his, usually to cope when frustrated over dying to a mob in one of the many games. He glanced at the screen as he spun and something peculiar caught his eye. He pushed his feet to the ground, as if pulling the breaks, to glare at the screen.
Three classes was on the screen, the first two were still loading their portraits, they were called Verminator and Captain. The last one was called Respecialist and it's portrait was a simple button saying [Respec].
"oh fudge did they finally run out of portraits.. haha" Ted scrolled down a little, more classes were down below; Surgeon, Cultist, Illusionist. He scrolled back up and the Verminator and Captain classes' portraits had loaded.
"Oh I guess not.. How did they end up so cheap on this one. It looks just like a typical button to reset your skill allocations, while all the other ones have detailed portraits. Maybe an error?" Ted chuckled to himself "I'll choose this one, if there is an actual game I want to see this. It should be able to entertain me for a while."
Ted selected Respecialist and was thrown back to the previous screen.

"It actually accepted it, I guess it really is a class. Well.. let's see how big the installation is going to be." Ted let out a loud laughter. As soon as he thought of how big the game would have to be, to fulfill all the promises, he was sure it wouldn't fit on his computer. If the game actually existed. Ted pressed [ENTER].
A prompt appeared:
|You have chosen Respecialist, you will be bound to this fate. Are you sure? (Y/N)|
"You will be bound to this fate, really? How dramatic.." Ted responded and pressed (Y)es.
The chair screeched a tiny bit before the apartment fell into eerie silence. The fans had stopped spinning. The screen was turned off. Ted was nowhere to be seen.

Noise of ramblings, conversations on top of conversation, only achieved in densly crowded places like casinos or malls were bringing Ted out of sleep.
"Guys! Guys! Wake up! We have been freaking isekaied! This has to be it! It feels too real to be a dream, hit me!" *Smack* "Ouch.. yep, still here."
More and more people woke up, confused, yet it quickly turned into a childish excitement.
"W-what's isekai?" one person asked, shaken by the circumstances.
He was met with a gleeful response: "We have been pulled into another world!"
"isekai! isekai! isekai!" with the cheerful shouting, Ted was brought out from his slumber, irritated, he was as surprised as everyone else to find himself in a new world, but he wasn't thrilled of the idea of socializing. When Ted opened his eyes, he saw a group of grown men before him. All wearing various fantastical armour and gear fitting their classes. Not only had everyone's clothes changed, their Physique had changed to fit their role. Knights, Warriors, Barbarians had all gained incredible musclemass, while Rangers, Scouts, Assassins etc. looked athletic. People who had chosen magic focused classes were wimpy, but with a gentle and clean looking skin, as if they had never been roughed up.
Ted took a good look at himself, he was still wearing his yoga pants and plain white t-shirt he had worn in his apartment, he had not taken a shower for days and his clothes were filled with grease and spills from his snacks and soda. Ted stood up and brushed himself off.
"Hey guys! How did you all change? Is there like a voice command or something?" Ted shouted to the group.
Some from the group turned to him and looked confused about the question, the confusion turned to shock upon seeing Ted.
"What are you wearing?! Haha! We woke up like this, did the isekai transfer bug with you.. that is so unlucky!" The guys chuckled with little concern. "Wait, what is your class?"
"Ehh.." said Ted, he wasn't certain "How do I find out?"
"Oh yeah, we have to find out, if this is like the isekais where there are floating panels" exclaimed a Knight amongst them gleefully and began shouting various commands in an attempt at opening up a digital panel "Menu! Status! Inventory! Character! Class! Skills!" but nothing appeared.
"It could be, that it isn't voice activated, maybe a gesture?" suggested a Magician. The group began swinging their arms while continuously shouting commands.
Ted, despite not being much for social events, joined in and swung his arms while shouting his guesses "Start! Help! Guide! Controls! Quit!?"
Not a single prompt popped up. Just as everyone felt they had exhausted themselves for naught, a female Ranger sat down to take a break- and moments later she began shouting.
"I got it! My character screen opened!" people gathered around her and she continued "I am a level 1 Ranger! There are a few buttons on here as well.. Traits, Skills, Passive Map.."
No one else could see her screen and someone in the crowd shouted, half jokingly, half doubtfully "Maybe she turned schizo!" it caused a laughter to erupt and others joined in.
"She is obviously a Ranger with the leather clothes and the freaking bow on her back! Haha".
"Hey, I see it too! I am a level 1 Knight!" shouted a man in shining armour mockingly, while unsheathing his sword and brandishing his shield.
The female Ranger didn't take their attitudes too well and shouted before running away "Jerks!" she turned a corner and ran out of sight of everyone.
A wimpy Magician snickered "This is the moment where she will encounter a pack of mobs and get slaughtered."
As prophesied a scream for help shook the smiles off everyone's faces.
A hoarse voice broke the silence "Shit! What happens if we die?" It was the self-proclaimed Knight from earlier and he continued "Isn't this isekai stuff usually permadeath?"
Everyone armed themselves "Why are we so jolly about this!? This isn't an MMORPG! If this is typical isekai shit, then the mobs could be ridiculously overpowered for level 1!"
~squeak~ a giant rat full of infected lumps appeared from where the female Ranger had ran off to.
"Wait, wait!" It was Ted, he had no weapons and was not ready to die "Anyone got a spare? I am unarmed!"
"Save yourselves!" Shouted a Knight.
"Maybe you are a Brawler" suggested a Ranger jokingly to Ted, unfazed by the circumstances.
~squeak~ ~squeeeak~ ~squeeeaak~ The rat charged towards them followed by a horde of its kin flooding in like a dam had broken.
"Melee front! Archers back! Magicians.. figure out how to throw your damn spells!" Commanded a Knight acting more mature than anyone had done previously.
A few Melee classes responded to his call, but most left him unheard, as they tried to save their own skin.
Ted pushed through to the back of the cave and sat down covering in fear.
Rats sprawled around them and flanked the unprepared group. It was too late for them to control the fight.
Others joined Ted in his corner, it was mostly Magic users, who, just like Ted, was left with no way to fight. Ted looked up as to greet them.

The screen! Ted had made it appear. He pondered shortly before announcing his theory to everybody.
"Everybody sit down! You can only activate the character screen while sitting!" People closest to Ted sat down and began a ripple effect amongst the scared crowd of unarmed men, many not hearing Ted followed the flock reaching for any hope to survive.
The frontline was quickly losing foothold, as the best armoured classes had fallen, leaving the weaker classes like Assassins, Rogues, Thieves and the like to absorb the blows.
Rats had also flanked the ranged classes from the sides and was reaching the outermost of the helpless magic classes. Ted noticed a man next to him was carrying a weapon.
"Hey! You are armed, go fight!" Shouted Ted forcefully, his voice was filled with contempt.
"Its a Ho-mi! A korean hand plough! I am a Farmer Class!" The man shouted back with a shaken voice.
Ted couldn't believe his ears, of all the classes presented to that man, he chose the Farmer class. Ridiculous as it was, Ted had managed to choose a class with even less survivability. He had no weapons and was in his old, gross clothes from back in his apartment still.
"If you are not going to fight, then give me the Ho-mi!" persuaded Ted.
"No way!" the Farmer shouted back, he wasn't convinced to let go of his last defense.
Ted turned back to the screen and pointed to [Skills] in desperation. it opened an empty screen, he had no skills. At the bottom was one sentence:
[ 1 Unassigned Skillpoint ]
He once again pointed and another panel opened, this time full of Skills, there was even a sidebar indicating it was possible to scroll for more.
The cave lit up in a warm burning light, revealing rats on every wall, with even some hanging on to the ceiling. A magic user had conjured a fireball in his hands.
*Crackle-crackle* *Boooosh!*
Magic users were fighting back the endless waves of plagued rats, they had figured out how to assign skills and discovered how to use them.
Eventually only one man was still sitting, everyone else was either standing and fighting or dead on the ground. The man was swiping his hand repeatedly, it was Ted, scrolling through his endless list of possible Skills.
"Why are there so many choices!? They are not even in alphabetic order! This is the darn class screen all over again!" Ted shouted to himself in desperation, as people began falling nearby.
"Summon Turtle, Water Spike, Divine Shield, Harvest Soil, Demonic Presence, Cateyes, Flarekick.. no, no no no! Let me summon a dragon or emerge a vulcano! I need something stronger!" Ted barely had a clue what any of the Skills do and could only guess based on their naming conventions.
The cave where a group of newly arrived Peacebringers had shared in laughter was now a bloodbath with corpses of both men and rats littering the floor worse than Ted's apartment. The horde of rats had thinned down, only a couple dozen were left, but the remaining Peacebringers could be counted on one hand. They were all magic classes and they were running out of mana, some resorted to throwing fists in desperation. It was a hopeless struggle, their weak physique meant that the rats barely cared when they landed a direct punch. They were overwhelmed, rats chewed onto their arms and ripped them apart with ease.
By now, Ted was getting bitten as well, he continuously scrolled down the list in defiance. Desperate to find a Skill, that may save him from imminent death. With one last struggle, before he succumbed to his wounds he picked a Skill.
"This is it.. no amount of scrolling could possibly find a better gamble than this."
[Reincarnation unlocked]
"either I double isekai this shit or this is the end.."
It was too late for Ted to survive and he died shortly after with the screams and shouting of the others filling his last moments, his vision turned to black.
