《Irregular Awakening》Chapter 12 - Setting The Stage

Sokar and Declan stand in a dark alley together, Declan visibly sweating and fidgeting while Sokar has a bored look on his face.
“Listen are you sure want to do this? Oswin is a dangerous guy and he has a lot of people under him. If you openly go against him I don’t know what’ll happen. When he was at the Cafe today he didn’t say anything to me, he might be letting me off the hook!”
“If Felix killed people and your boss let him get away with it then it’s possible that there are more people like that under him. I need to stop any possibility of that happening.”
That’s only partially the truth, Declan doesn’t know that I want the World Essence Oswin has. I’m really surprised he volunteered to come with me though, I would think he wouldn’t want anything to do with this.
“Sokar! They’re coming.”
Sokar and Declan hide behind a dumpster in the alley, and peek out from behind it to look at two men entering the alley. They stay in hiding as they listen to the men talk.
“There’s no way that’s true! Lord Oswin is so regal and he seems so powerful. You’re telling me he’s only 20 years old?”
“It’s true! He only started this group like 2 years ago and he’s been slowly expanding it ever since.”
The two stop in front of the dumpster unaware that Sokar and Declan are listening in on their conversation.
“Speaking of that, what’s with the group not having any name? He calls those four guys seraphims and calls himself god. But we don’t have a name for the actual group, that’s weird right?”
I need to knock both of them out at the same time. I don’t think I’m capable of doing that if they use that blessing Declan and Felix use though.
Sokar quietly whispers to Declan and Declan stands up from behind the dumpster with both hands in the air.

Let’s hope this works.
The two men look at Declan with shock and slightly move back away from the dumpster.
“Declan!? What the hell are you doing here?”
Declan takes a gulp of fresh air and begins to talk panickedly.
“I came to make amends! I made a mistake and I accept that, I want Oswin to pass judgement on what my fate should be”
The two men begin laughing and the one to the right steps forwards.
“You want Oswin to pass judgement on you? Then your wish has already been granted! Oswin has given us the order to suppress you if you ever come back!”
The man grabs a blessing from his pocket, one that looks incredibly similar to the one Felix and Declan used.
Bingo.
“Say your last prayers, Declan!”
As the man finishes his words the blessing in his hand is torn out of it and floats in the air defying gravity.
“What?”
A Greed with only 1/4th of my Ka in it was enough to tear it out of his hand, that’s good!
The man on the left doesn’t move for a moment out of confusion. He quickly fumbles and grabs towards his pocket, but his movements are too slow. His body flies back as the imprint of a palm forms on his chest.
I thought I’d have to use more than just 2 basic hands of Greed, but it looks like they’re gonna be enough.
The remaining man on his feet rushes at Declan and swings his fist, but Declan dodges and counters with a quick blow to his chin knocking him off his feet.
Nice punch, Declan!
The man just knocked down by Declan pants heavily and tries to get up, but his head is smacked down into the ground by a hand of Greed. He slips into unconsciousness and lays on the ground unmoving.
Alright, that’s one done. Time for the next…

The man knocked away by Sokar had gotten up while he and Declan dealt with the now unconscious man. But instead of fighting them head on, he instead ran away. Sokar tried to stop him, but the man quickly exited the range of Sokars Greed.
He got away. I was hoping to scare him some more, but this should be fine.
Sokar gets up from behind the dumpster and walks over to Declan who’s sighing to himself.
“You did a good job Declan. Hopefully things go the way you said they will.”
“I’m sure it will, with them thinking that I beat the two of these guys they’ll definitely send one of the Seraphims at us. Then if we beat one of them, Oswin will make his appearance personally. As long as it isn’t Abbadon we’ll have a chance.”
Abbadon? That’s such a weird name. Though, I guess that’s just par for the course now.
“Well, hopefully lucks on our side. But just in case you should take this blessing.”
The blessing being held by Greed flies over to Declan and drops it into his hand. He begins to examine it and rotates it in his hand.
“This isn’t what I’m used to. It’s a blessing for Heavens Thread and not Heavens Step, though it’s better than Heavens pressure at least.”
Heaven’s Thread, Heaven’s Step and Heaven’s Pressure? The naming scheme for these blessings are awful. Still, I should ask him about the differences between them.
“So what exactly are the blessings, and what’s the difference between the three you just listed?”
“Umm, I’ll just explain the functions of the three because they’re all pretty different. There are three different levels of blessing, minor which is only able to be used a single time and has a pretty negligible effect. Major which is what I can use. Most people in Oswins group use this level. And then there are extreme blessings, which the Seraphims use. All blessings have those 3 levels.”
I see, so then the Seraphims are gonna be on a level even higher than Declan is. Am I really up to the task?
“And then there are the three blessings his subordinates use, Heaven’s Thread, Heaven’s Step and Heaven’s Thread. Heaven’s Step transforms your body into that of an angels, or at least that’s what Oswin say. Heaven’s Pressure puts out pressure that affects people of a lower essence, but I don’t think it’ll work on you. And then there’s Heavens Thread. It’s pretty simple, by using it you can control these invisible threads and bind or track someone. I don’t have any experience with it, but it shouldn’t be hard to use.”
Thread… Could that thread I saw when I used the First Day be the same thread? I’ll need to test this out later, but for now Declan and I should get going.
The two leave the alley with unconcious man laying on the ground next to the dumpster. Both of them have looks of determination on their faces, though their thoughts are filled with doubt and worry. The man who ran away from the alley stands in front of the man who delivered Oswin Felix’s body.
“Sir Sariel! Charles and I were attacked an alleyway not far from here, he was on the ground unconscious when I last saw him. I didn’t know what to do- I didn’t think I could take him on by myself. I’m sorry, I just left Charles there…”
Tears roll down the mans face and Sariel looks at him with confusion.
“Calm down! I need you to tell me who attacked you.”
“I-It was Declan!”

Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday. Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000. Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West). No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect? My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited. Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible. Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.

Thanks to some peer pressure Andrew reluctantly agrees to join the experiment. The friends are soon on their way to Calorin but Andrew notices feelings coming from the bracelet, ones that want nothing to do with the strange man. It is just before they arrive at their destination that the bracelet changes everything for Andrew and he finds himself separated from his friends and the strange man. Stuck in the middle of a forest Andrew will need to find out where he is, how to find his friends, and why the bracelet has been acting the way it has. Author's Note:This story is a sidequel/prequel to Artifice: Tools of the Gods. As it only has one or two connected characters there is no need to read one or the other to understand them.
