《Love & Business》Second Date

"I can't believe I left work early for this," Hunter grumbled as we sat in a restaurant, waiting for the waitress.

We both left work and came straight here. Kennedy had made the reservation to a restaurant she and Zach always went to. The restaurant was good but I liked La Rosa better.

We had to wait a whole month for the reservation.

The waitress rushed to our table. "I'm sorry for the wait. What can I get you guys?"

"Give me the orange basil salmon meal with Bourbon as its drink," Hunter said as he gave back his menu to the waitress, who was trying to scribble down everything.

She turned to me. "And for you?"

I gave her back the menu. "I'll have the same but I want water instead of Bourbon."

She nodded then rushed off.

"I can't believe you're trying to get drunk in the middle of the day," I said to him.

"I'm not. One drink doesn't get me drunk."

I didn't say anything else until our food was brought. A different waitress came and brought our food.

"Nice seeing you again Mr. Lodge!" she said and he gave her a polite smile before she left.

We started eating.

"So do you come here often?" I asked.

He nodded. "Dad and I would come here for business lunches."

I nodded and studied him for a while before I said anything else. As he ate, his body looked relaxed and thankful for a break from work. He had been working so hard that I barely saw him at home for the week. He was gone before I was up and reached home after I went to sleep.

"I'm sorry."

He looked at me confused. "For?"

"Three years ago."

He froze.

...

"Hunter, I have something to tell you," I said as my heart raced.

He rested his index finger on my lips. "Shh, I have something to give you."

He pulled out two tickets out of his pocket.

"What's this?"

"Tickets to the concert this weekend."

"But you hate concerts."

"I know but we've been working so hard on this project. We're going to be making millions at only 25!" he rejoiced.

My heart sank. "Hunter..."

Just when I was about to tell him, his phone rang. His smile immediately dropped as he looked at me.

"You sold it?" he shouted. "You sold our work to an almost freaking bankrupt company?"

"Hunter, I was going to tell you-"

"So it's true?"

"It wasn't going to benefit us for long. It was just some silly project."

"Yeah, some silly project that we worked hard on. Do you know many nights I've stayed up bursting my brains out so I could get this thing done right?"

"I did it for us!" I shouted.

"No, you did it for you. You cold-hearted, selfish bitch. I don't ever want to see your face again." he said then walked out.

...

"I never really apologized. It was selfish of me and I regret doing it every day."

He took a sip of his Bourbon.

"Three years ago, you would've wanted to see me dead. Not your wife and soon-to-be mother of your child."

He raised his glass indicating the waitress to bring more.

"Aren't you going to say anything?" I asked.

"What am I supposed to say? If you're expecting me to say 'it's all good', I can't, I won't. I trusted you and you betrayed me. Betrayal is not something that just a simple 'sorry' can fix."

"I know that. That's why I'm going to fix it."

He looked at me.

"Starting from now. Lunch is on me!"

I called the waitress and payed for the bill. I got up and pulled Hunter to the car. He was heading to the driver's side but I stopped him.

"There's no way I'm going to let you drive after drinking."

He rolled his eyes. "It's fine. I'm not drunk."

"Hunter, please. You know why I try to avoid accidents."

He looked at me for a while but walked over to the passenger's side. A part of him still has sympathy for me. I got in the car and drove.

...

I pulled into the driveway of my house.

Hunter turned to me. "Why are we here again?"

I rolled my eyes and got out of the car. He soon came walking behind me.

I saw one of the security guards, Mr. Lopez, making his rounds. "Hello Ms. Bass." he looked at Hunter. "I mean Mrs. Lodge."

I chuckled. "Hello, Mr. Lopez. How is everything around here?"

"Everything is in good condition ma'am." he bowed then left.

When I turned to Hunter, he was glaring at me.

"What now?"

"You were mad at me when I allowed Ms. Turner to bow at me but you have your security bowing at you."

"Well, I didn't tell you to stop her did I?"

He gave me an unimpressed look. I smiled as I opened the door.

"Follow me. I have to show you something." I said.

"I thought you would've sold this place by now. The value will only go down each day," he said as he trailed behind me.

I rolled my eyes but stayed quiet.

We both walked up the stairs then to my room. As soon as we reached in, Hunter fell back on my bed. I hit him. "Hey! Don't mess up my bed."

I went into my drawer and took out the old ticket. I laid beside him then handed him the ticket.

"What's this?" he asked.

"What do you think it is?"

He looked at it for a while. "You kept it?"

"Yes, and I didn't go."

"Why not?"

"Because there was nothing to celebrate."

He stayed quiet.

"Did you keep yours?" I asked.

"Of course not. I threw it away the same day."

It's not like he was obligated to hold onto a ticket from three years ago but I still hoped he did.

"It's getting late. We should probably get home." I said.

The car ride was silent on the way back. Nowadays I got hurt over the simplest things. It didn't make sense. At one point in the ride, I even wanted to cry but I held myself together.

As soon as we walked into the house, Kennedy and Zach were sitting on the staircase. When they saw us they got up.

"How was your date?"

I wiped my eye from the tear that was about to drop. "It was great. Thank you for today." I said then hugged them.

"You must have eaten a lot because you look fat," Kennedy mentioned.

Hunter, Zach, and I froze.

"Kennedy," Zach said.

She turned to me as she realized what she said. "Soph-"

"I think we should get going Kenny," Zach said as he dragged her out the house.

I didn't even look back at Hunter. I just walked up straight to my room.
