《Alien Affair》FOUR: THE FIRST NIGHT

Mira didn't need much help with the closet. All she had to do was swipe up just like the back door and it opened up the hole in the wall that contained more than enough clothes for them both. Ezra had said they had to spend the first twenty-four hours alone, but how many days would they be expected to stay here? There were enough outfits to last her at least two weeks without doing laundry.

"These are Jayku styled clothing." Ezra pointed to one side of the closet. "The other side is human styled. There are various sizes, however."

Mira looked at the navy blue button up sweater Ezra wore and the pair of tan slacks and she made a face. "Are you wearing human clothes?" She couldn't believe she had only just noticed.

"Yes, we all did. But they're only human styled. This shirt is made of Jayku materials."

"Let me guess," Mira turned and began browsing through the clothing. "It's made out of some special plant that is some kind of special, super advanced threading that doesn't ever shrink or lose its color?"

"Actually, yes," he says. "It also helps keep the body healthy by releasing nutrients into the skin. I believe some country on earth just bought thousands of them from us because they are known to reduce unhealthy amounts of body fat in humans. Your kind do not treat their bodies very well. I'll be in the kitchen whenever you're ready to eat."

As soon as he stepped out of the door, Mira grabbed the Jayku shirt from a hanger and began to feel the fabric. "It's a super diet shirt," she whispered to herself. "That's freaking awesome." She pulled off the dress quickly and kicked it into the corner of the closet, pulling on the blue shirt and a pair of brown slacks styled like sweat pants from earth.

She dug through her suitcase, and though they instructed her not to bring any clothes or undergarments, as they don't wear them on Jayku, she did toss in a few hair ties. She pulled the pins and clips out of her hair and tied her brown-dark golden locks into a messy bun.

Maybe this will deter him from trying to sleep with me tonight, she thought. She washed the makeup off her face in the giant diamond sink, and then stepped out into the living room.

Ezra stood in front of a serving of familiar looking food on an unfamiliar, leaf shaped plate on the island and smiled up at her. "Nice hair," he laughed, and Mira shrugged at him.

"It's how we human girls like to wear it to bed."

"I'd see how all that hair would get in the way of intercourse."

She practically choked on her own spit. "No, I meant —"

"I'm kidding," he laughed, sitting down on one of the island barstools. "Don't worry, I told you I'm not making you do anything you don't want to do."

She sighed a breath of relief and sat down next to him. "Do Jayku make spaghetti and meatballs often?" She took a bite of the slice of bread first, finding it flavorless and butter-less.

"No. But I thought you'd enjoy a human meal tonight."

"Usually you put butter on bread before eating it."

"We don't have butter here. And they only bring a few crates of human food with each new wave of women, so just know that this human food will run out eventually."

She picked up the green fork and stabbed the spaghetti, twisting it how everyone in her house did. Ezra watched her, and after a moment, he picked up his own fork and followed her lead, stabbing the spaghetti and twirling the fork to wrap the noodles around it. The process entertained Mira immensely.

After dinner, Ezra washed the dishes and Mira scanned the bookshelf built into the wall in the corner for any good readings. They were all human books, but all of them were romance.

She turned around and walked into the bedroom, rummaging through her suitcase. She had brought pictures of her family, two of her favorite books, and her cell phone, which wouldn't work to call anyone, but if she could keep it charged, she could listen to the music she had downloaded on it. That was a task for later, however. She shut the polka dot suitcase and pulled it into the corner before jumping into bed and testing out the alien pillow.

She fell asleep quickly, not even really meaning to. And when Ezra was finished washing the dishes, he stepped into the bedroom and watched her sleep for a few moments, smiling down at her. He suddenly felt a deep urge to protect this girl, and he didn't completely understand why. He liked her. She was beautiful and honest and naturally inquisitive, which he found very amusing. But he had only known her for a handful of hours.

The desire to keep her safe and make her happy unsettled him, but then she flipped over onto her side, curling in on herself and pulling her knees to her chest. She acted tough when she was awake, but seeing her like this, so vulnerable and small, it made him realize he didn't want to do anything that might make her feel even slightly uncomfortable.

So, he grabbed the human cotton-stuffed pillow that was supposed to be for her, laughing quietly to himself about the fact that she stole his pillow, and then grabbed a spare blanket from the closet and laid down on the couch in the living room. It was much too small for him, and the pillow was so uncomfortable compared to his native pillows. He was used to sleeping in a swathe of perfectly gardened and dried leaves and stems. But he didn't care, as long as she was okay. He leaned over to the end table, and flipped the light switch of the lamp that he had been trained how to use, along with months of other training about earth customs and his technology. The Jayku had installed solar panels on the roof just so that these women could have familiar electricity. But it wouldn't always be like this. Eventually, they and Mira would have to adjust to different forms of power. But these cabins were designed to help with that adjustment.

Before the selection, he hadn't understood why they had gone through so much trouble to make the girls so comfortable, but then he met Mira. Now he got it. He wanted to do everything he could to make her happy. Even if that meant sleeping on a hard couch with a crappy pillow.
