《The Fighter》Chapter 5

The next half an hour Titus had me fix my punching stance and Dante made sure I knew how to get out of any way of being held. I felt a weight lift off my chest as I did this and I felt like I was starting to heal.
"Do you want me to bring you home?" Dante asked me as I finished my last punch.
"I am going to run," I decided, and Dante smiled at me and Titus nodded his head. I put on my headphones and I walked over to the treadmill and I started to run. I watched in the mirror and Dante and Titus chatted for a moment before both heading over to the punching bags, them both punching as hard as possible.
I ran about 2 miles until I was sore on my legs and exhausted after barely eating the past two days. I walked over to Titus and Dante who were running punching sequences on the punching bags. They both had a powerful punch that would have knocked me out.
I watched how Dante smiled when he punched, enjoying the feeling it brought him, while Titus's stare was steady and calm as if he was practicing not losing his concentration. A phone went off causing both men to stop, and take off one glove. They both ran over to me and dug into their bags Titus dropped his back in his bag and Dante answered his.
"Hello... yeah...shit...yeah I can... I will be there in 10," Dante said before hanging up.
"They just called me into work because someone called out, I can drop you off quickly before I go," Dante said, throwing on his sweatshirt as he spoke.
"I can take an uber it's okay," I said to him and Dante looked at me like I was crazy.
"I am not letting you take an uber alone," He said, and I gave him a small smile.
"I will be fine, I just got self-defense lessons," I said and he glared at me.
"Barley," Dante said.
"I can drive her," Titus said, shocking both Dante and me.
"You see, go I will be fine," I told Dante and he thanked Titus before hugging me.
"You will be okay," he said and I let out a small tear, thankful that he cared about me.
"Thank you," I said genuinely before he gave me a wink and left.
"I will be done in 10," Titus said to me, and I nodded my head, not wanting him to stop his workout on my account. I stretched out my sore muscles and finally, he walked over and put down his water and headphones.
"Thank you for driving me," I said to him and he simply nodded his head. I put on my sweater and put the hood up, still insecure about my bruises.
"When did that happen?" Titus asked me as we walked to his car.
"Saturday night," I shrugged my shoulders. I noticed his bruise was starting to yellow and was on the same side as mine
"At least we have matching bruises," I said, trying to make a joke. Some woman walked by us and she gasped as she saw my face and she walked by faster. Titus unlocked his car, opening up the passenger door for me.
"This is why my plan was to hide in the house for the next week," I muttered as I got into the car.
"You are a fighter now, we wear our bruises proudly," he said to me before starting the car. I smiled over at him and his phone went off, sending a ringing sound through the car.

"Call from Marie," it said and he groaned and answered.
"Hello?" He said.
"So don't freak out," she started the sentence and Titus's fists tightened around his steering wheel.
"What happened?" He asked and she sighed.
"Well Mason wanted to go to the park, and I told him it was too cold so I let him instead make an obstacle course in my living room and he fell off the couch and hit his arm on the table," She said, and Titus swore under his breath.
"How bad is it?" He asked calmly, and she giggled nervously.
"Dad it is all purple and puffed up like a marshmallow!" Mason said sniffling in the background.
"I am coming to get him," Titus said, putting his right blinker on.
"We will see you in a moment," Marie said before Titus hung up.
"I can bring you home first," Titus said and I shook my head.
"It sounds serious, you should get him to a doctor," I said, and Titus started to drive. We pulled up to a little brick house and I smiled at how cute it was.
"Am I going to freak Mason out?" I asked motioning to my face and Titus shook his head.
"He is used to bruises," Titus said, before leaving the car. He walked back out with Mason in his arms who was wrapped in a blanket and holding his arm. He smiled brightly as he saw me.
"Quinn!!!!" Mason said to me, as Titus sat him in his car seat.
"Hi, Mason! I heard you got hurt," I said turning around to smile at him, Mason's face widened as he saw my face closer.
"I thought you don't fight," Mason said, frowning and I gave him a reassuring smile.
"I got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be in one," I said with a smile, not wanting to tell him the truth, and Mason's face perked up.
"Did Dad get to watch you, like we watched him the other day?" Mason asked me, oblivious that I wasn't actually in a fight.
"Yes, and you should see the other guy," Titus said and I silently thanked him, as I was unsure of what to say. We pulled up to the hospital and Mason insisted that I carried him, so I unbuckled him and carried him, ignoring my sore arms.
Titus went to check Mason in and I took a seat in the busy waiting room sitting Mason on my lap, leaving a seat next to me for Titus. Titus walked back with a clipboard full of paperwork and I noticed the looks people were giving us. Some people were giving me a sorry glance, and others were glaring at Titus. Some were even giving me a glare.
I then realized it looked like Titus and I had Mason when we were young and we were abusing each other and now abusing Mason. I cuddled Mason into my chest tighter, sending a glare at a lady who was staring at him.
Titus ruffled Mason's hair before going to return the clipboard. I pulled out my phone and I put on a youtube video about cars and handed it to Mason who watched it while I held up the phone for him. After about 20 minutes I felt him lean into my chest and I knew that he fell asleep.
"Thank you for holding him, he has been talking about you all weekend," Titus said to me and I nodded my head.

"He is really a great kid," I said to Titus who smiled looking down at his son.
"How old is he?" I asked and Titus looked up at me.
"He will be 5 in a few weeks," Titus said to me and I smiled down at Mason.
"A November baby?" I asked and Titus actually let out a small smile.
"He was born early morning November 17th around 4 am," Titus said.
"I am sure his Mom loved that," I said rubbing Mason's hair and I looked up and Titus was frowning but he didn't say a word.
"Mason King," A nurse said and Titus stood up and picked up a sleeping Mason and I grabbed the blanket which was covering him.
"Follow me," she said to us as we walked into a room with a bed and two chairs in the corner. Mason had woken up and was groggily looking around.
"Hi Mason! I just have to get your blood pressure," The nurse said, as Titus placed Mason on the bed. Mason held out his arm which wasn't hurt and she took his blood pressure and then pulse.
"How tall is he?" The nurse said.
"About 3 feet," Titus said.
"His weight?" The nurse said.
"Last time we checked he was 35lbs," Titus said with his arms crossed as he towered over the nurse.
"Okay, I am going to bring Mason to go get x-rays," She said, rolling in a wheelchair for Mason who got on it excitedly. As they left Titus took a seat next to me.
"How are you doing?" I asked him, noticing he was fidgety.
"It is his first serious injury," Titus said to me.
"He seems to be doing okay," I said, realizing Mason was in a pretty good mood even though he was injured.
"He is a tough kid," Titus said and I smiled up at him.
"Maybe it's because he sees you push through your injuries," I said and Titus looked up at me.
"I don't get injured very often," Titus said with a small smirk and I let out a laugh.
"Okay, we will see at your next fight," I said and he looked up at me.
"I will make sure to show off for you next fight," he said and I felt my face turn red. I decided to change the subject, nervous at the idea of flirting with someone like Titus.
"Do people always stare at you when you come to the doctors?" I asked, and Titus frowned.
"This time it is exceptionally worse. I am sure it has to do with the fact that we are all covered in bruises," Titus said and I smiled at him. Titus went to say something else when Mason rolled in with a frown on his face, I could tell some tears had rolled down his face.
"Are you okay Mason?" I asked and he nodded his head.
"He was in some discomfort when we took the x-rays from moving his arm around," The nurse explained before leaving to get the doctor.
"Bud, you know it's okay to let me know when something hurts," Titus said, standing up to talk to Mason. I stood up as well and Mason let out a tear and shook his head.
"I am fine," He said and I spoke up.
"Sometimes I pretend things don't hurt just to not worry other people," I said softly and Mason looked up at me, and let some more tears fall.
"You do?" Mason said to me and I nodded my head.
"Yeah, look I hurt my wrist too," I said, showing him my bruise, and Mason reached out with his good hand and touched it.
"And my eye hurts, I don't know how your Dad can deal with getting punched all the time," I said and Mason smiled up proudly at his father but then looked back at me.
"My wrist hurts too," He said softly and I grabbed his hand with mine.
"Luckily we are at the doctors and they can make you feel better," I said to him and he smiled back at me. We heard a knock on the door and a man walked in and introduced himself as Dr. Gowne.
"So it looks like Mason here fractured his wrist so we are going to put him in a cast for the next 4-6 weeks," The Dr. said, and Titus nodded his head. The doctor then explained that he can't get the cast wet and all of the other care instructions. Titus let Mason pick out the cast color and he picked out black like his Dad's boxing wraps.
The doctor started to put on the cast and the nurse asked to speak with me alone.
"It is just hospital policy that we make sure Mason's home life is safe, we noticed your bruises and we just wanted to make sure there was nothing more serious going on," The nurse said to me and I blushed.
"I am just a friend of theirs, I was working out with Titus at the gym he boxes at. He isn't abusive at all," I said and she blushed at the misunderstanding.
"I am sorry, I just wanted to double-check," She said and I nodded my head and when I came back Mason had on a brand new black cast.
"You are all set to go!" The doctor said and Mason showed me his cast excitedly. I picked him up as he ran towards me and told him how cool his cast was. Titus looked at me with questioning eyes and I just smiled at him as I wrapped Mason in this blanket because it was cold out.
"Is it lunchtime yet?" Mason asked, and Titus answered.
"It is only 10 bud," Titus said laughing as he held the door open for me. We got to the car and Titus opened up the door and I set Mason down inside the back of the car and let Titus put on the car seat.
"Can I go to the gym with you tonight?" Mason asked and Titus laughed.
"Only because you are injured," He said to the little boy bouncing around in excitement.
"You go to the gym twice a day?" I asked, impressed and Titus nodded his head.
"It keeps me in shape," He said as he started to drive to my apartment. As we got there he parked the car and Mason screamed goodbye to me.
"Goodbye, and thank you for coming with me," Titus said and I smiled at him.
"It was no problem, goodbye Mason," I said and he started to scream.
"Get Quinn's number Dad!!!" And I looked over at Titus, blushing.
"Give me your phone," He said, and I handed it over to him, and he typed his number in and texted himself.
"Goodbye Quinn," He said and I smiled at him.
"Goodbye Titus," I said to him and I walked up to my apartment.
