《Billionaire Boss》Chapter 11

Daphne

I never know what to do with my weekends. I don't go out much so usually I stay in and watch tv or something. I'd already watched four episodes of Friends this morning and was about to start a fifth when my phone pinged.

I hopped in the shower real quick and french braided my hair into pigtails since I didn't have time to blow dry it. I put on a pair of jeans, a cropped sweater, and my Uggs and was ready just in time for a knock on the door.

Kat squealed when I opened the door and held up a magazine.

"I saw this in the store this morning and had to buy a copy!"

She shoved the magazine into my hands and I looked at the cover. It was a picture of me and Mason from the New York charity event captioned:

"Oh God," I mumbled. This wasn't good. This was bad, very bad. I couldn't be on the cover of a magazine. Tons of people would see it. I couldn't afford for someone back in Florida to see it. They'd drag me back to my old life and I couldn't go back.

Suddenly my breathing wasn't so good and I felt clammy.

"What's wrong Daph?" Kat asked and sat me down on the couch.

"I'm on the cover of a magazine."

"Yeah and you look hot as hell," Kat stated. She didn't understand. This was just something that happened for her. If I had known this was going to happen I never would have gone to New York.

"I can't be on the cover of a magazine."

"It's ok. It doesn't say your name or anything, you'll be fine."

No. No I won't be fine. This is a disaster. A dumpster fire disaster.

"I don't feel so good. I think I'm gonna have to cancel lunch," I told Kat.

"Ok. I'll stay here with you, just let me text Mason real quick."

"Why?" My eyes shot up to her. I didn't want Mason to know I was freaking out like this over a picture. He'd take it the wrong way and I'd have to explain something I'd really rather he not find out about. I left that in Florida and I don't want to drag it back up.

"He and Danny were going to meet us for lunch. I'm just going to let him know the change of plans."

I put the magazine face down on the coffee table and laid down on the couch. I tried to slow my breathing back to a normal pace and soon the pounding in my chest retreated.

I closed my eyes for a moment to clear my head but when I opened them Kat was gone. I must've fallen asleep. Oh crap. Now she was gonna think I'm a bad friend. First I cancelled our plans and freaked out on her and now I fell asleep on her when she was going to keep me company. I'm ruining everything.

"You're awake."

I nearly jumped out of my skin at the sound of Mason's voice. What was he doing here?

Mason squatted down next to the couch and stroked my cheek.

"How are you feeling? Kat told me you felt sick."

"I'm better. Sorry about that."

"Don't be sorry, it happens."

I sat up and Mason sat next to me. He wrapped his arm around me and I snuggled into him while we watched a movie.

I got in my car and drove right to Daphne's apartment. I knocked lightly so I wouldn't wake her up and Kat let me in.

"Is she still asleep?" I asked her.

"Yeah."

"Thanks for staying with her. I'll take over."

"Ok," Kat said with and wiggled her eyebrows. I rolled my eyes and closed the door behind Kat.

Daphne was on the couch, asleep, and she looked so peaceful. I loved watching her sleep. I sat down next to the couch and stroked her hair while she slept.

It was getting late and I was about to leave. I'd been here for a few hours and I didn't want to stay in her house without her permission as much as it killed me to leave, so when she opened her eyes just before I opened the door, I was relieved.

"You're awake."

I walked over to Daphne and sat back down next to the couch. My hand stroked her cheek and she let out an adorable little yawn.

"How are you feeling? Kat told me you felt sick."

"I'm better. Sorry about that," she said and faintly blushed.

"Don't be sorry, it happens."

Daphne sat up and made room for me so I sat down next to her and wrapped my arm around her. I smiled when she snuggled into me. We watched a movie together and by the end Daphne was fast asleep again. I carried her into her room and tucked her into bed.

"Sweet dreams," I whispered and gave her a kiss on the forehead before leaving.

I used her key to lock the door and then slid it back underneath through the crack between the floor. I wasn't going to leave her door unlocked for some creep to come in and take advantage of her.

I drove back home and ate a quick snack before climbing into bed and falling asleep with pictures of Daphne in my head.
