《Unveiling the Arcane》Sage

I felt better and more secure in my feelings about the guys after my conversation with Dante. Surprisingly for the one who hides his true emotions so well, he seems to show the most empathy when it comes to the guys. He made me feel like it wasn't wrong to feel the way that I do and that lifted a weight off my shoulders. I knew nothing real could ever come from those feelings, but I would cross that bridge when I got to it. I doubted they all felt the same way anyway, so it was a moot point.
I was at work with Mandy this time. Caden was my babysitter for the night. It still felt strange to be bouncing between all the guys every night. I spent the night with the twins, Dante, or Maddox in my bed every night. Them coming to my room was easier than me going to one of theirs every night. Maddox was the one who suggested the change. "So, which one are you dating?" Mandy broke into my thoughts.
I laughed in a manic way that wasn't at all cute or adorable. "None. We're just friends." I tell her.
She scrutinizes my face for a moment, "They don't look at you like they are just your friends." Many looked over at where Caden was sitting and stared at me intently.
I was sure he was probably talking himself down about not being able to own people. His eyes glowed a dull green and a shiver went down my spine. If only he knew he already owned part of me in a way. "He's just possessive. He's a demon." I shrug like it doesn't matter.
"And I'm a fairy. Don't see me eye fucking bowls of cream like that." She muttered.
I gasped, turning to stare at her mouth agape, "Are you really?"
She nods. "Yeah." Giving me her bright smile.
"Can you fly?" I am suddenly excited about the prospect.
"No. Not all fey can fly. I'm an Unseelie fey." She answered.
"Oh." I deflated at the unfortunate proclamation.
"Why does it matter?" She asked curiously.
I sighed before leaning back against the counter. "I was hoping you would be able to teach me how to fly if you knew how. Apparently, I have giant wings I have no idea how to use." I shrugged like it wasn't as big of a bummer as it truly was.
"Wings. What kind of Arcane Species are you?" She asked and looked embarrassed because of the rude question.
"I don't know. The guys are trying to help me figure it out. My dad passes away when I was young and my mother is human." I answer truthfully.
Mandy nods her head in understanding before we start breaking everything down and cleaning up the cafe. It was uneventful as we finished and Caden walked me to the dorm. We had plans to meet up with the guys and watch an episode or two of the new show we had started watching. I was getting back at Caden since I had blackmailed him.

We walked into my room together and I directed him into my bathroom to get dressed in what I had picked out. "You can't be serious," Caden shouted from the bathroom.
I shrugged to myself, "Okay, I'll call Dante and tell him what you called him."
"I just meant that pink isn't really my color." He said quickly.
I smirked but didn't respond. After a moment he cracked the door open and stuck his head out. "Do I really have to do this?" He whined.
Nodding my head, I gestured for him to come out of the bathroom. Hanging his head, he pushed the door all the way open before walking out. Biting back a laugh I patted the bed next to me for him to sit. He looked at the things laid out on my bed. "Really?" He pouted.
He sat on the bed with a forlorn look on his face. Getting to work I put some bright pink glitter eye shadow on his lids before evenly applying a coat of bright red lipstick on his lips. The final touch was some blush. I sat back to evaluate my work. Caden was wearing a tight bubble gum pink body con dress with a pair of wide knit fishnet stockings. "Perfect." I smiled at him.
He frowned but was kept from responding when there was a knock on the door. Opening the door, I revealed a box covered in shiny wrapping paper with a bow on top of it. Caden and I looked at each other before he picked it up and followed me back into the room. There was no sign that anyone had been in the hall. We stood over the box sitting on my desk. After looking at each other, our shoulders both heavy with stress, I pushed in front of Caden and pulled the lid off the box. Inside nestled on a bed of tissue paper was a note. You've had my heart since the moment I laid eyes on you. We will be together soon my love. I looked into the box before putting the note down on my desk. Carefully I folded back the paper and gasped stepping back into Caden's chest, a shuttering gasp leaving my lips. Hands held my shoulders as Caden leaned around me to look into the box. Curses left his mouth as he pulled his phone out of his pocket and began dialing. Without saying anything I rushed to the bathroom where I threw everything, I had eaten that day up into the toilet. Hands pull the loose hair away from my face and there was a calming shushing sound from behind me. I felt separate from myself in a way. Like it was someone else who had gotten the gruesome gift and someone else who puked her brains out in front of an extremely attractive guy wearing a dress.
When my stomach settled, and I felt more firmly me, I sat back and looked up at Caden. "I think I'm going to brush my teeth twenty times before the cavalry arrives."

Caden nods in agreement before leaning down and pressing a kiss to my sweat-dampened forehead. My teeth were sparkling like a toothpaste commercial by the time I was done. When I exited the bathroom in my pajamas and lion slippers everyone was there. Dante looked pissed as he stood by the offending gift.
Maddox was the first to notice my entrance and wrapped me in a tight hug. When he let go Aiden was there to wrap me in another. When he finally let go Dante was there. He didn't hug me but the tight grip of his hand on my shoulder was firm and reassuring. "We need to call campus security." He spoke slowly.
I nod in agreement feeling like an idiot for not thinking of it myself the other two times I've gotten into trouble on campus. It would have put less stress on the guys if I had been able to nut up and not be such a damsel in distress. I watched as Dante dialed a number and started to speak to someone. I didn't listen to the words just watched his hands move during his conversation with the poor person on the other end. When he hung up, he seemed to be feeling a little better. Maddox pulled me to sit in the bed among him and the twins. They sat around me on all sides. Caden behind me, Aiden to my left, and Maddox to my right. Dante paced in front of us as we waited.
Caden placed both hands on my shoulders giving them a gentle and soothing rub. He manages to avoid the lines of scar tissue on my back which made me wonder if the guys had talked about it. I decided I didn't care as long as his magic fingers continued their stress assassination on my body. There was a loud knock at the door causing Caden's hands to pause though he didn't release me. A uniformed man came in along with an older guy in a business suit. The two men did a double-take on Caden and what he was wearing. The guys hadn't said anything about it though Aiden had been sending Caden smirks.
"Headmaster." Dante greeted with a respectful nod of his head.
I had never met the man, but I watched as he held a hand out for Dante to shake. The headmaster looked young for such a role. He couldn't have been much older than my father if that. "I heard about the issue and figured I might as well come and see for myself." He drooled on.
I watched as he dusted off the front of his suit jacket and straightened his cufflinks. He seemed bored and uninterested. There was no worry or protectiveness inside of this man. The absence of any of the appropriate feelings made me angry. How could an educator show up in a situation like this without a care in the world? The officer approached the box as Dante indicated it before he looked inside and read the note. He bagged them in red labeled evidence bags. "If it makes you feel any better it looks like it's an animal heart. Way too small to be human." The office looked over his shoulder at the group of us on the bed.
Dante looked over at me before turning back to the officer. "It's a fox heart." He told him.
A whimper escaped me. Dante gave me a small placating smile, but it didn't make the worry or anxiety go away. It was my fault that that poor fox was dead. It was a threat to Dante. I knew it and he probably knew it as well. I was so lost in my head that I didn't even realize the officer and headmaster were leaving until the door closed behind them. Dante crouched down on the floor in front of me. His eyes locked on mine, and he made soft shushing noises. I shook my head in denial. "It's all my fault. He's threatening you, it's all my fault." I barely got the words out through my gasping panic.
"You don't know that Flower." Caden tried to comfort me, but I knew better.
"Dante scared him off when he was following me and now, I had a dead fox heart delivered to me. That isn't a coincidence, it's a threat." I could barely speak as the panic slid up my throat even breathing was a feat I was barely managing.
"I'm not scared," Dante told me. "This person is obviously a coward, or they wouldn't be hiding behind shadows and relying on intimidating gifts. There are four of us and one of him." Dante told me.
Aiden nodded in agreement, "Can we please talk about what Caden is wearing now?" he demanded.
A surprised giggle escaped me as Maddox ran a soothing hand down my spine and Aiden wiped the moisture from my face I hadn't even realized had leaked out. Dante kept speaking calming words to me as the other guys gave calming touches here and there. Caden joked about Aiden just being jealous that he was prettier than him. They all ribbed Caden and Dante did take a few photos. I barely even realize it when I start to drift off to sleep curled against the warmth of Maddox's chest with Aiden running his fingers through my hair. They had managed to distract me from the bigger issues going on.
