《Unveiling the Arcane》Sage

We had everything set up in the twin's room arguing over the movies we were going to watch. "If we watch Spider-man we need to watch the Toby Maguire movies first and work our way towards the newer ones," I demanded.

"Nobody likes the 2000's spider-man movies." Caden scoffed.

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Toby Maguire was the spiderman and was closest to the comics. The others are just made-up spider woo woo bullshit." I poked him in the chest in defiance.

Aiden laughed from his spot and relaxed in the bed watching us argue. "Caden, it's her birthday, just let her have whatever she wants."

I smiled triumphantly at Caden. "We watch them in order of when they came out." I declared.

Caden grabbed my hand that I hadn't realized was still poking him in the chest. His thumb rubbed along my wrist, and I couldn't contain the shiver from the contact. "Happy birthday." He said and stepped away from me.

I looked down to see a very familiar diamond and gold tennis bracelet around my wrist. I looked back over towards Caden who smirked at my expression. "Did you just gift me stolen property?" I asked, confused, and not really upset by the prospect.

Aiden snapped his eyes up to look at Caden. Caden shrugged his shoulders. "She deserved it."

"Why?" I found myself asking.

Sure, the girl had been forward and a little rude but she had just been trying to get his attention. "She interrupted my time with you." He shrugged at his own words like it was simple.

I furrowed my brows at him and noticed Aiden doing the same. It must be out of character for Caden to give things he steals to other people. I was still confused why he had stolen from that girl with the end goal of gifting it to me. "Thank you," I spoke softly to Caden.

I didn't need to understand the gift to know that it had significance to him. He smiled broadly at that before a knock came at the door. I sat on the edge of the bed while Caden went to go answer the door. Aiden took the opportunity to hand me a gift bag. I looked up at him and he smiled softly at me. "Happy birthday."

I smiled at him. "You really didn't have to get me anything." I looked down at the mid-sized bag as Dante came into the room.

"Just open it." He knocked his shoulder into mine.

Biting my bottom lip, I carefully opened the bag to find a pair of mismatched slippers. I glanced up at Aiden before I pulled them out. One was green and the other was black. Both had little evil emoji faces embroidered onto the top with little devil horns. I looked up at him with a smile. "Were you jealous that I had fox and lion slippers but no demons?"

He smirked before nodding in agreement. "Figured it was a mistake that I needed to fix."

Without too much thought I reached over and wrapped my arms around his neck with another whispered 'thank you' before I hopped from the bed and treated Caden to the same.

When I stepped back Dante was watching with a strange sense of scientific inquiry. He held out an envelope and waited for me to step toward him and take it. Looking up at him I smiled. "Did you want me to open it now or later?" I asked.

"Now," he grunted more than spoke the word.

I carefully tore open the envelope before pulling out a card. The card was simple in a pastel pink that said happy birthday in fun colors. On the inside, there was a piece of folded-up paper that I moved aside to read what had been written on the card as a knock sounded at the door. Caden went to go answer it.

In small blocky lettering, a message had been added to the inside of a blank card. Happy birthday Sage. -Dante. Pulling out the folded-up paper I saw that it was a voucher for a massage and facial at the spa in town. I raised my brows at him before smiling and throwing my arms around him too. "Thank you."

He was stiff for a moment before his arms wrapped around me as well. "You're welcome." He murmured close to my ear.

I pulled back to see the other guys staring like we were an alien species that had just landed on earth claiming to have kidnapped Elvis and were trying to return him. Maddox stepped forward and pulled me into a hug before he handed me a small, wrapped box. I smiled up at him. Carefully I removed the wrapping to find a small white jewelry box. Inside nestled on a bed of cotton was a round pendant with two little blue forget me not blooms on top of a sprig of Queen Anne's lace cast in resin. Gold rimmed the edge of the pendant ending in a loop that hung on a dainty chain.

"It's beautiful," I whispered, fingering the charm.

I looked up to see Maddox's blush running up to his ears. Smiling, I held the small box up, "Want to help me put it on?"

He nodded in response. I placed the box in his hand and turned. Holding my hair in one hand off my neck I waited while Maddox pulled the necklace from the box. A wide arm wound around my chest and through the space my bent arm created under my hair. Warmth radiated from the brush of his forearm against my pulse point as he threaded the chain around my neck. He pulled away bringing the chain with him. I met eyes with Dante as the necklace gently tugged tightly at my throat. The look in his eyes made my breath catch. His head tilted as he observed the way I was standing, his gaze traveling over the length of my throat. I found myself able to breathe again when Maddox stepped away and Dante closed his eyes for a moment too long to be a blink. I reached up and rubbed the silver dollar-sized pendant between my thumb and forefinger.

I turned around and threw my arms around Maddox whispering a thank you for him as well. When I stepped back, I looked around the room with a soft smile. "Thank you, guys. You really didn't have to get me anything, but I really appreciate it."

I went back through giving everyone another hug before we settled down for the movies. I sat leaning against Maddox this time. I would have asked Dante since he was in the middle with Aiden, but I always found him to be intimidating.

"What are we watching?" Dante inquired while Caden got the movie ready to cast to the projector.

"Spider-man," Aiden answered for him.

"Which one?" Dante looked over at him.

Caden sighed dramatically like he was delivering a eulogy, "2002."

Dante smiled what seemed to be the first bright smile I had ever seen from him. I watched transfixed as he sat up a little straighter and his normal shields slipped for a moment. "Did you guys finally come to your senses?" He smirked in that egotistical way only he could pull off.

"No," Aiden said with finality.

"The birthday girl gets what the birthday girl wants," Caden spoke glumly like I was making him watch a 24-hour long documentary on the history of the button.

Dante looks over to me with his brow quirked. "Really?"

I shrugged, which felt strange while resting back against Maddox, "I tried to convince them we only needed to watch Spider-man, Spider-man 2, and Spider-man 3 but they wouldn't go for it, so we have to watch them all."

Dante's lip curled, "But all of the others are just not the same." He protested.

I shrugged again, "Birthday girl powers only go so far it seems."

Dante smiled another big and bright smile at that before Caden turned the movie on and we all went quiet to watch.
