《Hush | on hold》Chapter 20: funeral

Oh my God I'm so sleepy.

J e y r i

I expected us to pull up to a funeral home or church- someplace like that but no, the car stopped when we pulled in front of the cemetery. The driver got out first, then proceeded to open the door for Gio and he came round himself and opened the door on my side.

He held out his arm for me as I stepped out of the car and I grabbed onto it. I looked around us and only two cars seemed to pull up behind us. It was Lucifer and Astarte, and Melanie and Matteo. I frowned when I didn't see Hayley and he cleared his throat, making me look up at him.

"They probably got caught up in traffic, don't worry. Sebastian won't do her any harm. You'll see her soon, so come with me. Okay?"

I nodded slowly and he smiled, "Stay close with me for the time being, not many of the people here take a liking to me as of right now, so I'd rather you stay in my line of sight, so I'll know you're safe."

"O-okay..."

I can't shake this bad feeling that keeps welling up in me. My gut is telling me that I shouldn't be here. At the same time though, I didn't want to let go of his arm.

There were people dressed in the same black suits when we got to where his mother was being buried. Her casket was still open but the ground where she was going to be placed was already dug up. Everyone visibly had guns on them, almost seemed like they were purposefully showing them off.

Their attention turned on us as we walked through groups of people and I looked back to see if Melanie or Astarte was still behind us and I felt relieved when I saw them. Gio nudged me and leaned in slightly, "Don't look around so much, " he whispered.

"Okay..."

We stood in front of everyone and it felt wrong of me somehow. I wasn't her family or anything yet, I was sitting where close relatives were meant to, while some of the others here might have been closer to her.

Gio stood up and patted my hand before walking over to his mother's casket, I guess that's his way of telling me to stay put. When he left, I saw Matteo get up as well and Melanie came over next to me.

"Have you seen Astarte and Lucifer? They didn't come sit with us," she whispered to me, "And Hayley still isn't here."

"I'm worried as well, they were supposed to be right behind us but Gio said they got lost in traffic. I don't know why but I have a bad feeling about all this, it doesn't seem right. Why does everyone carry guns?"

"These are most of his family from his dad's side I heard," she explained. "I think his mom's side either refused to come or asked for a second funeral to be held. They don't like each other... so everyone you see here is probably mafia."

I guess that explains the tension I've felt since we arrived. If Gio killed his dad then I'm sure they'd hold a grudge about it.

"Doesn't that make him a target...?"

"I'm not sure but he doesn't look concerned. I think maybe that with what went down back at the house and between him and Lucifer, his dad's side has no choice but to accept him. I don't know, I'm just rephrasing shit I heard Matteo say. I doubt they will try something on him here regardless, it's still his mother's funeral. She was still his dad's wife so they have to respect that."

"You know Matteo and Sebastian knew his mom as well," She said, smiling. "Matteo told me about her a little. This morning, if he seemed a little off, he was probably just in his feelings and Astarte was being- well you know, you were there."

When Matteo and Gio came back over, Mel stood back over to where she was before and Gio stood by me again. "What were the two of you talking about?"

"Nothing really... just wondering where everyone else is."

He chuckled and rested his hand on my lower back, "Listen Jeyri," He spoke in a more serious tone than before, "You remember last night? I told you I'd let you go, sì?"

"Yes..." My face heated up, remembering what happened, but I nodded.

"I keep my promises, but I'll need you to keep one for me as well. Can you do that?"

"O-okay?"

He smiled, "Good. Promise me you'll do exactly as you're told, as I told you, and exactly when I tell you."

"I... will but why-" Am I going to have to shoot someone again?

He caressed my face with his thumb and smiled again. "Shh," he pressed his finger against my lips. "No more questions Jeyri. Just promise."

"I promise."

Why does it feel like I've made a death wish?

He held my hand in his and my eyes widened as he slid a ring onto my finger. I looked up at him but he didn't say a single word. It wasn't the same ring that he had that one time... but it looked just as expensive if anything. I wanted to ask him about it but he just told me to stop asking questions.

We stood there as a man up in front gave a small speech and I'm assuming we all prayed in the end. I just kept my eyes closed and did what Gio did. When they closed her casket and began lowering it to the ground the expression on his face looked slightly pained but he said nothing.

He slipped his hand down in mine and held it squeezed it slightly before loosening his grip.

"Pretend you're crying," he whispered, leaning into me and he pulled me into a hug. My mind couldn't wrap around the reason he was telling me to do it but I clung to him and made sniffling sounds as if I were really crying.

He rubbed my back, cooing me like I was a small child. Somehow even though I wasn't really crying or even sad in the least bit, his voice sounded soothing to hear. When he spoke in a soft tone, it felt calming.

He kept my head buried in his chest as he began walking and I followed him blindly, feeling myself push past multiple people, "Scusaci," he said, as we pushed through. (Excuse us)

He let go of me once we were a distance away from everyone and he sighed, "Are you cold?" He asked and before I could reply, he took off his jacket and placed it around my shoulders, "Put it on."

It was heavier than it looked but I slid my arms through it and he buttoned it up for me.

"Giovanni!" I heard a voice call out his name and he turned as an old man came walking toward him, a few others following behind. I noticed Matteo and Melanie in the group and her eyes met mine for a few seconds and she gave me a small nod.

Gio cleared his throat, " Sergio... It's been a while since I've last seen you." He said holding out his hand and they shook. "Sebastian would've come as well but, everything's been tense nowadays as you know."

Wait what?

The man, assumingly Sergio, chuckled and shook his head, "All is well, as long as my boy's not slacking off on his job. My family holds our position with high regards, I'd have to give him a firm talk if he were to disappoint in any way." His eyes raked over toward me and I felt chills down my spine. I had to hold back my facial expression from giving it away but I wanted to cringe so hard.

"And who might this be? I see a ring!" He stated, and Gio held my hand up, "Oh, excuse me for not introducing you earlier. She was a little emotional as you can see. This is Jeyri... my fiance. Jeyri, this is Sebastian's father, I believe I've mentioned him before?"

My mouth dropped open slightly when the words fiance came out of his mouth and I quickly had to replace the look of pure shock on my face. "O-oh! It's nice to meet you uh... Sergio."

I glanced over to Melanie and her eyes were wide but she didn't say anything either. He shook my hand and his finger caressed over mine as he pulled away, "Lei è bella. Vorrei che tu fossi mia invece." He laughed and Gio chuckled,

"He says you're beautiful and he wishes you were his instead. That's too bad, isn't it? Sei già mio." (You're already mine.) I blushed when he kissed my hand and looked down at the grass under me, I have absolutely no clue what he's thinking or even why. I know this all must just be an act for him but still...

"I recognize that ring. Your father bought it when he proposed. This is rather sudden... How long have you been hiding her for? It's unusual to see you so taken with someone."

Gio chuckled and looked at me for a second, "Is it?" He asked.

Sergio's face seemed to get more serious and he frowned, "I served by Dino for years and my boy will serve under you the same. I fear that you've been becoming softer, it makes me wonder if you are still suited for this. I'm sure you know who it was that ordered the attack on your home. I had no choice but to rile things up-and your men were easily persuadable."

Sebastian's dad is the one who had those people attack Gio then? So then... He killed his mom?

I felt Gio's grip on my hand tighten and he forced out a smile, "I was aware that it could've been you. You were closest to my father so it wasn't hard to guess. Besides, none of my men would dare oppose me without someone powerful backing them from behind."

"So you realize that it needed to be done? Viviana was a liability for you..." He looked over at me then back toward Gio. "You've made allies I see but that alone isn't enough- You understand right? If you want to be in full control you must accept what comes with it."

The bad feeling that I had from earlier was coming back tenfold now.

Sergio pulled out a gun from his waist and held it out to Gio. I watched him slowly take it and pull his hand out of mine. "Gio..." My voice came out in barely a whisper and my eyes widened as he turned to me. I looked over to Melanie and Matteo was holding her back from moving.

"I thought you were going to keep your promise-"

He held his gun up to me with a cold expression on his face. Why did I trust him? Why did I think he'd actually let me go? Tears formed in my eyes and a loud bang went out. My breathing hitched and I stumbled back and fell as I felt it hit me.

Am I dying? Is this what it feels like?

A warm pool of blood pooled out around me and everything started to get blurry. I saw him stand over me and the sound of the gun going off a few more times rang in my ear. Melanie was screaming in the background but I didn't have the energy to turn my head to see her.

"Lucifer... take her out of here, you know where to dump her right?" I heard his voice getting more distant and I tried to reach out but I couldn't move my body. I felt myself being picked up and the rest I can't remember. Everything just turned dark.

He just ended up using me in the end. I thought maybe I had him wrong in the beginning but I see why now... this is why they call him heartless. He didn't hesitate once to shoot me.

What was I really expecting from the Mafia though?
