The Surrogate

Hey guys, there is a slight change on my updates, for now, it will be from Monday through to Friday, will leave the weekend free for family and other things. Being summer I want to enjoy the lovely days instead of being stuck inside.

Over the next two days, he made sure she stayed in bed, he didn't try to kiss her again. He was going to wait until the time was right. He tried to keep Gina away but on the third day, she insisted she was coming over to visit Christy whether he liked it or not.

"Look, I know you want her to rest but I'm her friend and have been worried sick about her. So, Abe and I will bring over some steaks for you men to BBQ while we women visit."

He chuckled to himself when they hung up, he liked Gina and was so glad that she and Christy were friends. Being overprotective of her he made sure she had a long nap before they showed up. While the men were outside Gina and Christy had a long talk.

"I'm so glad Cole finally had his eyes opened as to what an evil witch Joyce was," Gina said, pouring herself a glass of wine. Now, tell me everything that happened that night."

Christy told her everything, except the part where she and Cole kissed. But it was as if Gina sensed something had gone on between them.

"You're not telling me everything, so spill it."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Come on, Christy, did anything happen between you two?"

"Okay, we kissed, but that was all."

"It was about damn time."

"It wasn't the right thing to do, he's still married to Joyce."

"Oh, but it wasn't a real marriage. They hadn't been intimate in years, she kept denying him sex. But I will bet my last dollar she wasn't going without sex, I'm sure she's been cheating on him right from the beginning. He's such a good man and didn't deserve the way she treated him."

"Yes, he is a wonderful man."

"You're in love with him, aren't you?"

Christy lowered her head and looked down at her hands. "Yes." She looked up at Gina. "Am I a horrible person for falling in love with a married man?"

"No, it's not like you went chasing after him. I believe he loves you too and now that he and Joyce have split up there's nothing stopping you both from being together. But sadly Cole is an old-fashioned kind of man and won't sleep with you until he's a free man."

"That's what I love about him."

"That doesn't mean you can't fool around, some light petting and a whole lot of kissing," she said, smiling over at Christy.

"We won't be doing any of that until the divorce becomes final."

Gina smiled and nodded, she was pretty sure that before too long there would be a lot of necking and touching between them.

The guys were drinking beer as they cooked the steaks on the BBQ. Abe couldn't help but noticed how more relaxed Cole was compared to when Joyce was here.

"I've got to say it was about time you threw Joyce out. When you were with her you were always so uptight and on edge. Now I can see the old Cole coming back to life. Were you able to get that lawyer I recommended? He's one of the best divorce lawyers around."

"Yes, thanks for giving me his number. I know it's only been a couple of days that Joyce left but it feels like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders."

"So what does this mean for you and Christy?"

"What are you getting at?"

"I know you have feelings for her and her for you. Now you can be with her and not feel guilty about it."

"I am in love with her but I don't want to rush things and neither does she. After the divorce is final and the baby is born we'll go from there."

"Why wait? You deserve to be happy and how can you keep your hands off her? The woman is gorgeous and you two are meant to be together. It's not like you can get her pregnant." He chuckled at his own joke. "Sorry man, I couldn't help myself."

"I'll be honest, it's hard staying away from her."

"Have you kissed her yet?"

Cole smiled to himself as he turned his back on Abe, remembering the passionate kisses they shared. "We're taking things slow for now. I don't want to give Joyce any ammunition to use against me during our divorce proceedings."

"I have a feeling she is going to try and take you for everything you have."

"I'm sure she'll try, but I'll offer her a decent settlement."

They all sat outside enjoying their meal and talking. Cole kept looking over at Christy, he was falling hard for her. She was so different from Joyce, her smile made his world so much brighter. He couldn't wait for the day that he could finally make love to her. He loved seeing the tiny baby bump that was visible under her spring dress she was wearing.

It was getting late so Gina and Abe said it was time for them to go home.

"Hey, Gina and I are going to our cabin this weekend so why don't the two of you come with us?" Abe said just before they were leaving.

Cole looked at Christy. "They really do have a nice cabin by the lake. It might be nice for us to get out of the city for the weekend. Would you like to go?"

"I think that would be lovely."

Gina was beaming from ear to ear. "Oh I'm so happy you're coming with us. We'll leave early Friday and come back Sunday night."

Abe touched Gina's arm. "Sweetheart, I won't be able to get off work until late Friday so we won't be able to leave till then." But then he had a thought and turned to Cole. "But since you don't have any surgery or patients to see on Friday you and Christy could go up in the morning and we'll join you later on. You've been there plenty of times so you know the way and where we've hidden the spare key."

Cole looked over at Christy. "Would that be all right with you?"

"Sure, and we can stop on the way and pick up a few groceries."

"You really don't have to do that. I mean there's plenty of food there already. But if there's something in particular you want then you'll find a nice grocery store in the town just before you get to our cabin," Gina said and gave her a hug before she and Abe left.

When they were gone Christy and Cole started cleaning up the rest of the mess that was left from their evening.

"That was so nice of them to invite us to their cabin," she said as she put the leftover salads in the fridge.

"You'll love it there, it's a two bedroom with a small kitchen and living room and it's on the lake. It's a beautiful area."

"Did you say that it's only has two bedrooms?"

"Yes. Why, what's wrong?"

"Where will we all be sleeping? I know that Abe and Gina will have their own bedroom, that only leaves one."

"I know what you're worried about, I will sleep on the couch. Unless you are willing to share a bed with me," he said, winking at her.

"Nice try," she said with a smile on her face. "I can sleep on the couch and you can have the bed."

"There's no way I'm going to let you and my son sleep on a lumpy old couch. You will take the bed. I was wondering if I could have your permission to put my hand on your stomach? I really love feeling how he's growing."

She reached out and grabbed his hand and placed it over her stomach, her hand over top of his. "I'm really looking forward to when he starts moving. I know it's too early yet but sometimes I feel a movement inside me."

"It won't be much longer, and I'm looking forward to it also."

She looked into his eyes and with his hand still on her stomach, she felt the stirring of desire building up inside her. "It's getting late so I think I'll go to bed now."

He removed his hand from her stomach. "Yes, it's been a long day and you need your rest. But before you go I am going to kiss you."

She closed her eyes when she felt his lips on hers, it felt so right. Though he was still a married man he was now separated and in the process of getting a divorce so she didn't think it was wrong and kissed him back, at least she hoped so.

It was killing him to stop, he really wanted to just pick her up and carry her to bed and make love to her. "Good night, sleep well," he said as he walked out of the kitchen and headed upstairs to his room.

The next few days he went to work and during his break he called his lawyer to tell him what to put in the divorce papers. He was going to give Joyce a very large settlement but the only thing he wasn't willing to part with was the house that he had built. It's not as if she liked it, always complaining about how small it was.

Friday morning he packed the car up with the luggage they were taking with them to the cabin and they were on their way before noon.

"So how far is it?" she asked after they had been driving for over an hour.

"It's about a four hour drive so we're almost halfway there. If you're getting hungry we could stop and grab a bite to eat."

"I'm not hungry yet, but I could use the restroom."

"There's a gas station up ahead, I can stop there and fill the gas tank up. You can use the restroom there, it's clean and I'll grab us a snack to eat on the way up."

When they got there she went inside while he filled up the gas tank. After filling the tank up he went inside and grabbed them each a drink and some donuts.

Sitting in the car she smiled at him. "Donuts, not a very nutritious thing for a pregnant woman to eat."

"I know how pregnant women get cravings for something sweet, a couple won't hurt you. I wasn't sure which were your favorite so I got one of each that they had."

She took out a Boston cream and took one bite. "I don't usually eat donuts but this is so delicious," she said as she took a bite and handed him an apple fritter.

The rest of the drive to the cabin they did a lot of talking, she learned all about his life growing up and his mother.

"Don't you ever see her?"

"I haven't seen her in person in over a year, she's busy traveling. But she does phone me once every couple of months."

"Have you told her that you hired a surrogate and about what's going on now, with the divorce and everything?"

He cleared his throat. "No, but I guess I should do it soon. I know she won't be upset about the divorce. My mother never liked Joyce from the beginning. I'm not sure what she'll say about the baby and how I went about it." He reached over and took her hand in his. "Are you ever going to get in touch with your parents and let them know that you're expecting?"

"I don't think I can, and even if I do try to call them they'll probably just hang up on me. And if they knew that I agreed to be a surrogate they would flip out."

"But things are different now, you and I plan on staying together."

"That's what's going to make it worse."

"How so?"

"It'll be one thing to be a surrogate but to be with the man whose baby I'm carrying who is not even divorced yet they would be furious. It's better that they don't know anything about it."

"I'm so sorry that they feel that way, I'm sure you must miss them."

"They're my parents, I love them and I miss them but they don't want anything to do with me. I really try not to think about them. They will never forgive me for having moved in with my ex and they sure as heck won't forgive me for this."

He could see that not having her parents in her life was hurting her, not wanting her to be stressed or upset he changed the subject.

"Once we get settled in to the cabin I'll take you for a boat ride in Abe's rowboat and show you the sites."

"I would love that, and I've never been in a rowboat before. Is it safe?"

He glanced over at her and smiled. "I would never take you in one if I thought it was too dangerous for you. We're almost there, did you want to stop at the grocery store and get a few things or should we just go straight to the cabin?"

"I would hate for us to go empty-handed, so maybe we could stop and get some snacks and maybe some beer for you and Abe and some wine for Gina."

Stopping at the store they got the things they needed and as they were paying for their items an elderly couple was behind them who noticed her baby bump.

"Oh you two make such a lovely couple, when are you and your wife expecting?" the woman asked, smiling at them.

Cole glanced at Christy whose face had turned a light shade of red. Instead of correcting the woman he put his arm around Christy's shoulders. "Our little bundle should be arriving in about five months from now."

After saying goodbye and getting in the car she looked at him. "Why didn't you tell her that we weren't married?"

"I didn't think it was any of their business, besides, I'm hoping that someday we will be married to each other."

A warm feeling flowed through her, he really was planning on a future with her. In her wildest dreams she never would have thought that she would be someone's surrogate and end up being with that person even after the baby was born. Then she started wondering if he was rushing into something that he wasn't ready for? She didn't want to think about it this weekend, she just wanted to have a nice and peaceful time at the cabin with her new friends.
