《Her Strength, His Weakness》Epilogue

I am woken up by the sound of Archer's footsteps on the wooden floors of our bedroom. He is most likely getting ready for his early training session before work.

"Archer?" I mumbled from under the sheets.

"Shh, go back to sleep. I didn't mean to wake you." He whispered as he approached the bed. "Sorry."

"No it's okay. I have to be up in a bit anyway."

That was true. My shift at the veterinary clinic down the road starts at 5:30, where I work as the head vet. It is a rewarding job, being a vet. I've been working at the clinic for three years now, I started there immediately after I finished studying.

"Alright." He said before planting a soft kiss on top of my head. "Would you like some tea?"

"No thank you." I shifted deeper into my pillow.

Archer smiled down at me as he stood back up, but not before he gave me a kiss on the head. "I'm leaving now. Goodbye my lovely wife."

I laughed at his weirdness. "I'll be seeing you my wonderful husband." I joked in return.

"Love you, Ar."

"Love you too. Be safe." He blew me a kiss in response to my words.

"You too." He said as he turned to leave.

I rolled over onto my side, snuggling back into the duvet.

Archer and I have been married for just over a year now.

Archer proposed when we went to the beach for a week with our families. Archer had planned a date for the two of us and set up a camp fire and picnic blanket on the beach under the stars. When I had stuffed my face with a few strawberries that is when he took the opportunity to get down onto one knee and asked me to marry him. With a mouth full of strawberries, and apparently a shocked look on my face, I said yes. Obviously.

Archer said that he wanted to do it on the beach with a fire, because it was like the first time we had said I love you when we were with our friends by the coast. It was adorable. The look of anxiety in his face when he waited for me to swallow my mouthful of strawberries and answer his request was enough to melt my heart. It was cute and not to mention hilarious.

I felt my stomach twist and churn as I lay curled up in the blankets, so I sat up quickly and rushed into the bathroom. Luckily I made in to the toilet in time and threw up into the bowl.

I sat against the wall next to the toilet, trying to regain my composure.

"That can't be good."

I stood up, flushed the toilet and washed my face by the basin. I brushed my teeth as well.

After I cleaned myself up I made my way back into my room and picked up my phone. I dialed the secretary at work and she picked up.

"Hey, Charlotte." I greeted.

"Aurora, how are you." She replied.

Charlotte has been apart of the clinic for years, years before I even managed to get a job there. She has always supported my choices and opinion in the clinic. She even came to Archer and My wedding.

"I'm alright, but I'm not feeling so well."

"Oh no dear, what's the matter?"

"Oh it's nothing, I just called to tell you that I'll probably be late. I have to stop by the pharmacy before I come in today."

"Don't be silly. Take the day off." She insisted. "Today is a slow day. The clinic will survive one day without you."

"Are you sure."

"Absolutely. You're always here, one day won't hurt."

She is right, I guess. I haven't had a day off in ages. Weekends are the only days I have to myself, and Archer.

"Thank you so much, Charlotte."

"No problem. I'll phone and see if Doctor Andrew can fill in for you, I'm sure he won't mind."

"Thanks again. You're truly a life saver."

"Have a good day dear, I hope you feel better."

"Bye."

That makes today a lot easier. I let out a sigh of relief.

I went to my closet and searched for an outfit to wear before I brushed my hair and applied my makeup.

After I was finished getting ready I made my way into the hall and down the stairs. I grabbed my Keyes off of the countertop and made my way toward the garage, where my car waited for me. I reversed out of the driveway after turning the key and throwing my bag in the passenger seat.

I Haven't been sick in over a year, this is an odd occurrence. Because my job requires so much of my time and concentration, I take many supplements and keep a healthy life style to ensure that I perform at my best. After all the pets of the area can't afford for their vet to not be able to meet their needs.

When I arrived outside of the shopping centre, I parked my car and made my way into the pharmacy.

After wondering around inside for a few minutes before I found what I was looking for an I went to the cash registers to purchase the product.

"Good morning." The cashier said.

"Hello." I responded. "How're you?"

"I'm alright thanks, better than you must be feeling by the looks of your purchase." She said with a knowing smile.

I laughed at her comment. "Probably."

"Nausea?" She asked.

I nodded, smile still present on my face.

"Well good luck." she said as she handed me the packet.

"Thanks." I laughed as I turned to leave.

"Bye." I waved back.

I walked out of the store and toward my car.

The whole way home my mind was consumed by thoughts of the endless possibilities of what was happening with my stomach. Only one possibility stuck out at me, hence my purchase.

After returning my car inside the garage, I unlocked the house door and walked inside. I tossed my keys onto the counter and made my way to the bathroom.

When I was inside I removed the box from the packet that the cashier gave me and opened it carefully. I pulled out the pregnancy test and prepared myself for the possibility that I was pregnant.

It would be huge news, that's for sure.

How would Archer react? Would he be happy or frightened? Both?

We've spoken about the possibility of having kids before, but we never planned for a time where we'd have one.

After a few minutes of letting the test register the results I brought the stick up to a level where I could see the screen clearly.

I looked down at the test and saw a small plus sign depicted on the screen.

Positive.

"Oh my..."

I took a moment to process of what I was looking at.

"Wow."

My eyes began to burn with tears, happy tears.

This is amazing.

I was going to have a baby.

I sat staring at the little plus sign for a few moments longer, thinking of the ways to tell Archer the news.

I wiped the test stick clean with a baby wipe and placed it in my dresser drawer, the positive sign still visible.

I searched the number of anobstetrician and phoned to make an appointment for half an hour from now.

When I was done I ran back out into the kitchen, grabbed my car keys and drove to the grocery store. After parking my car I made my way inside and walked over to the bakery section to choose a cake for when I told Archer the news. I paid for the cake and a few other items, then made my way to the clinic for my appointment.

The secretary of the clinic smiled at me as I walked inside.

"Are you Mrs Smith-West?" She asked.

"Yes I am. I made an appointment over the phone, I think I spoke to you." I said.

"You did. Only after I put the phone down did it register in my brain that you're my vet. You treated my dogs broken leg a month ago." She informed me happily.

"Oh, yes I remember. The beagle?" A smile made its way onto my face.

"Yes." She said excited. "He's doing so much better."

"I'm glad."

"What're you in for today?" She asked, changing the subject.

"I'm here for my appointment with Dr Evans."

"Okay." She said, while clicking a few buttons on the keyboard. "She's ready to see you now."

"That's great."

"You can make your way through there." She instructed.

"Thank you."

I walked through the hallway and found Dr Evans' consultation room. I knocked softly.

"Come in."

I creaked the door open and stepped inside.

"Good morning." I said.

"Hello. You must be... Mrs Smith?"

"Yes."

"Okay great." She said. "And you're here for a pregnancy checkup."

"That's correct." I confirmed. "I used a store bought pregnancy test and it tested positive. I just needed to come in to make sure everything is okay, how far long the pregnancy is, etcetera."

"It's completely understandable." She said. "It's always better to check."

I nodded my head.

"Take a seat over there." She instructed. "I'm going to run a few tests, urine and blood, just to confirm the pregnancy, then I'm going to do a general health checkup."

"Okay." I listened as she explained.

After she continued to explain to me how the appointment was going to go I did what she told me. She took samples of my blood and urine, she measured my blood pressure, my blood sugar levels and many more uncomfortable exams were done.

We received the results of the blood work and urine tests not too long after they were taken.

"Well, Aurora. You definitely are pregnant." She said smiling. "Congratulations."

"That's incredible." I felt my heart swell.

"You're about four weeks along."

"Four weeks? I had no idea for four weeks?"

"Thats completely normal." She reassured. "Most people won't show any signs of pregnancy for five to six weeks."

I nodded.

"You're going to be a good mother." She said. "It was good of you to come in and check with us as soon as you could."

"Thank you. That means a lot."

"Of coarse."

After she explained some basics of pregnancy to me and planned my next checkup and ultrasound, she sent me home.

This is scary to process, but I'm excited about what the future could be like.

I'm going to have a daughter or son. That is exciting.

When I arrived at home I went to the kitchen and set the cake and other products on the counter. I pulled out my phone and dialed Archer's number.

"Hey, Blondie. Everything okay?" He answered.

"Yes everything is good." I said, hiding my excitement. "How's work?"

"It's a slow day." He said, sounding bored. "And you?"

"I didn't go in today."

"Why not?"

"I wasn't feeling too well this morning, but I'm okay now."

"Are you sure that you're okay?"

"Yes, Arch. I'm sure." I said laughing at his concern.

"Okay good."

"What time do you think you're going to be home today?" I asked.

"Maybe in two hours." He said.

I looked at the clock to check the time, 13:01. That doctors appointment took a lot of time out of my day.

"Why?" He asked.

"I was thinking that we have our parents over for dinner tonight?"

"Um, Okay." He said confused. "What's the occasion? Did I forget a birthday?" He asked sounding stressed.

"No occasion. I just miss them." Lie.

"Okay. Maybe they should come around five?" He sighed in relief.

"Sounds good." I said.

"Great. I'll see you later. Love you."

"Love you." I put the phone down.

I had a few hours to prepare a meal for the five of us and get the house 'guest ready'. I started immediately.

After I was done preparing everything I needed to I called my sister, who was in Europe for a show, to tell her the news.

"No freaking way!" She yelled through the phone.

"You cannot tell mom, dad or anyone!" I warned.

"Why not?" She asked, sounding disappointed.

"Nobody knows yet. Not even Archer." I said. "I'm telling him tonight."

"Awe. Ar, I'm the first to know?" She teased. "That's so sweet."

"You're a child, you know that?"

"I do."

Willow and I spoke for half and hour longer before I had to go clean myself up for when Archer would get home, which would be soon.

After I took a bath and changed my cloths, I heard the front door open.

"I'm home, Blondie." Archer yelled. "And the food smells amazing."

I laughed to myself at his idea of a 'greeting'.

I walked out to greet Archer, hiding the bag with the test inside being my back, and stood infront of him.

"Hello." I said smiling like a crazy person.

"Hello?" Archer smiled back. "What's up?" He asked confused by my expression.

I put my arms around his neck and gave him a hug. When I pulled away he gave me a kiss on the lips, soft and slow.

"What's this?" He said as we pulled away, gesturing to the bag.

"Sit down." I instructed.

"Okay? Should I be worried?"

"No." I said laughing.

"Thank goodness." He held his Chet in relief.

"So... remember how I said that I wasn't feeling great this morning?"

"Yah." He gave me a questioning look.

I placed the bag on the counter top. "Open it."

He looked at me with a weird look, but turned to open the bag anyway.

He removed the tissue paper from the bag and reached in to pull out the test.

He looked at it for a second and located the little screen with the positive sign on it. His eyes widened and he looked up at me in disbelief.

"Wha-" He began, unable to continue.

A huge smile spread across his face as he looked back down at the test.

"Are... you're?"

"I'm pregnant, Archer." I said in attempt to help him out, happy tears threatening to spill down my face.

"This is amazing." He said standing up to give me a hug.

"Really?" I asked.

"We're going to be parents, Aurora. Yes it's amazing." He beamed, squeezing me in a hug.

"I'm so glad that you're happy about it."

"Of course I am."

I smiled at him when he let me out of his embrace.

He leaned down and placed his lips over mine and kissed me slowly.

"I love you." He breathed as he pulled apart.

"I love you, too." I giggled.

He laughed with me.

"I went to the doctor to check everything and to confirm the pregnancy."

"What did they say?"

"We're four weeks along."

"Already?" He said shocked. "Wow."

"I know."

"Is this why you wanted our parents to come over?" H gave me a look.

"Maybe." I said innocently.

"So you want to tell them tonight?"

"Yes."

He laughed. "Cute."

"I'm excited okay." He chuckled.

"So am I, Blondie. So am I."

We sat talking at the counter about the possibilities about the baby and our futures.

We laughed about certain possibilities of the kid's possible traits that it would get form us. I cried about them as well, stupid hormones.

Our parents came over a short while after we finished talking and we shared the evening with them. We eventually told them the news, which they couldn't have been more happy about. They went on about the names that the child would call them by and having a schedule of who gets them a way times. This of course caused Archer and I to exchange looks. We all spent the night laughing and celebrating.

My life has been amazing since Archer became a part of it. I'm grateful that he has given me the courage to do many things that I never thought I'd be able to do, he gave me more family (His mother and siblings), a future with him by my side, love, laughter and this new baby.

Archer has been and will forever be my strength.
