There is blood everywhere. In the middle of the pool of blood is the half eaten body of a man, his eyes glazed over. The bear had its fill of his body and left the rest of him there. Surprisingly, it ate just enough of him to keep him alive. The pain of being eaten alive was unimaginably horrible which made him feel some relief once the chewing stopped. After all, the pain was gone for now and his body was going numb.

In the distance, the sound of running from a group of men could be heard coming his way. Leading them was a young woman in her twenties. As she saw him, she gasped and stopped in her tracks.

“Search the perimeter and find the animal! Kill it!” An officer, who seemed to be leading the group, ordered the men after seeing the half dead body. The men immediately scattered throughout the forest to kill the ferocious beast.

There was no medic in the group of men to care for the man. The group of men only brought a first aid kit, just in case. They never believed it would come to this when the lady asked them for help. Another officer approached the man intending to administer first aid but once he saw the state of his body, he turned his head and walked away without saying a word. When the woman saw his face she knew there was no hope.

Gathering up here resolve she approached the man, who was unresponsive to the happenings around him. As her crying face got into his field of vision, his eyes finally moved to look at her face clearly. Surprised, the woman couldn’t find any words to say to this stranger who saved her life. After all, he was the one who drew the bear’s attention while she fled. If not for him, she would have been the one lying there in the cold forest, waiting to die a horrific death.

“Why… Why would you save me?”

“B-Because… I’m tired” The pain he was in was evident in his voice.

His eyes lost the remainder of their luster and he died after uttering those final words, leaving behind the stunned lady. She didn’t understand what he meant, all she could do was be grateful for the new slip on life that he gave her.

The bear was eventually hunted down and killed. The woman went back to her loved ones. The incident was reported in the news, talking about how a complete stranger, a hero, saved a young woman in distress.

The man’s soul moved on, his only wish in life, unfulfilled.

“I wish I could fly!”

Unbeknownst to him, that wish was about to come true…
