Something inside my mind tugs me to stay here and practice my power. Hmm…I wonder how much of this I can use before it's exhausted. I don't know how long my mother is going to be gone, though… What else to do… I think back to the first thing I learned, growing teeth.
I raise my tiny eyebrows. Wait a minute… teeth is a bone structure… so I can grow that too? I take out my tiny hand and look at my right index finger. I put my concentration into growing the tip of the finger that is separated by the last joint.
OUCH, FUCK! FUCK, FUCK, FUCK! My bone rips through my skin as I greatly increase the size past the last joint. I think I grow it around ten times the normal size. I literally see the bone. Some blood drips onto the bed while I grimace for the next seven minutes. My finger returns to normal, and the pain immediately stops. I sigh.
Holy shit. I thought I was going to die… that was the worst pain I've ever felt. I'd think having a piano fall on me would be more painful… Well, that idea was a bust. Is this power useless, after all…? No, no wait. There has to be a way around this. Think, think, think…
A baby starts small… but the baby can grow naturally into an adult… how does that happen, exactly…? I spend an hour thinking about it with my full concentration, but then I realize my mother still hasn't come back. I figure she went to sleep her husband.
No matter how much I think about it… I really need to know everything about the human body from bone shape and nerves… How can I learn something like that in this world as a baby…? Impossible.
I raise my tiny eyebrows. Wait… what the hell am I doing… I don't need to create the same type of cell… I can create other types of cells next to my muscle and bone cells… What if… I create eyes inside my body to learn all of its shapes? I smile. Now I need to figure out how exactly to do that. I put the same focus into my eyes when I think about growing my eyes a little. I remember that feeling, and I try applying it on a smaller scale inside my hand.
I did it… but… Fuck, I am stupid… I feel like I wasted all my years studying in school. I slap my forehead with my tiny hand. I forgot about the optic nerve. Shit… this is too complicated for me… Why did I choose this power again? I wish Rigel just gave me the power to beat everything with one punch. That would be much simpler.
I can't. I can't do this right now… I'm just going to go back to sleep.

"Wahhh!"
I wake up due to Lucy's crying. I yawn as I turn my body around. I notice my mother still hasn't come back from her trip. What's that stupid bitch doing…? Oh, it looks like she's coming back. That woman is always running toward crying babies…
The door busts open, but it isn't my mother. It is a man dressed similarly to the men I saw yesterday.
"Sir! There are two infants in here!"
He says after turning toward the hallway.
"Alright. Take them and bring them here. As for the rest of you, hurry up and sweep the mansion!"
I hear someone yell in the distance. That sounds like the old man… what's going on…? The man that opened the door comes to pick Lucy and me up. He ignores Lucy's crying. He brings us to the ground floor. Along the way, I learn the general path of how to get from the third floor to the ground floor. Around me, there are more than a two dozen women, about a dozen butlers, and about two dozen guards. About half of the women are carrying babies.
"I just finished the head count, sir! Madam Pancakes, Madam Chamomile, and one of the guards are the only ones missing, Sir Von Hawk!"
What?! My mother is missing?!
"Hey, you. I remember you from yesterday."
The old man asks a guard who looks like he's about to shit his pants.
"What? No, I do-don't know anything!"
I recognize him to be one of the two guards who came out of room 328 yesterday. What's he so panicked about…? The old man walks closer to him and pulls out his katana.
"Are you sure about that? Don't lie to me. You were the one who claimed to have strangled Madam Heartfilia because she was a demon. With the blood splatter on the third floor and the one discovered this morning, it is clear to me that it is not true. So tell me the truth, or die."
I feel something murderous coming from the old man. I gulp. This guy is dangerous. My baby senses are tingling. He rests his katana on the poor guard's neck close enough to give him a paper cut.
"Wa-wa-wait! There's a misunderstanding!"
He shouts nervously while flailing his arms in front of him.
"I really don't anything about that!"
"Then… what do you know? Clearly, you are hiding something."
More blood leaks down from his neck wound.
"Wa-wait! Johnny was the one who strangled Madam Heartfilia! I saw him do it! He was going to blackmail me if I didn't follow his instructions! Madam Chamomile saw too, and he took her hostage! He tied her up in her room, sir! He forced me to—"
The old man decapitates the guard. The surrounding crowd doesn't scream at all. Oh, fuck! This guy isn't a joke!

"I've heard enough. Where is the guard that was getting the master key? Room 328 is the only room we haven't checked."
He asks another guard as he sheathes his katana.
"He should be on his way back to the third floor, sir."
"The demons are definitely among us. We will get to the bottom of this today. The seer said that one of the demons will manifest themselves in an adult and the other one in a child less than two years of age. Perhaps you are the demon?"
He suddenly turns to me and asks. I try my hardest not to make a reaction. I make some stupid baby noises, giggle, and clap my hands in front of me. Holy shit old man, do you have to be so serious?! LAUGH DAMN IT! I'm a fucking cute baby!
"Maybe Madam Pancakes wasn't hallucinating from overworking herself after all."
He stares into my eyes, and it feels like an icy cold katana is about to cut me down.
"I found Madam Chamomile! She's alive… but uh…"
I sigh after he turns to the guard on the third floor.
"I heard she was tied to the bed?"
"Yes… and she's naked, sir."
"No matter. Cut her loose, give her some clothes, and bring her here. She may know something. Did you clear the whole floor?"
"No, sir. This was the last room."
"I see… so that must have been Madam Pancakes…"
What was Madam Pancakes…? What's he talking about?
About a minute passes.
"Demon! Demon! Demon!"
A woman screams from nearby. The old man turns immediately toward the scream and pulls out his katana.
"What's going on?!"
"I don't know, sir! Madam Chamomile started yelling demon out of nowhere!"
Several seconds later, we see the two in view. The woman has her hands on her head and tries to run away, but the guard stops her. She constantly screams the word "demon." Seriously... What the hell is going on…? I don't understand. Someone… please explain this. Eventually, the guard brings the woman over to the old man. I notice her stomach bulging out greatly. Is she pregnant?
"Calm down, Madam Chamomile. What happened?"
"Demon! There was a man who forced himself on me! He's the demon! I saw him change into a demon! He's going to kill me!"
"Calm down. I'll cut down any demon that shows—"
Something suddenly crashes down from the ceiling. The crowd around me screams and runs away from the landing point. As some of the debris clears, two things emerge. I gulp. Are… are those the demons he was talking about?! One of them is small no more than two feet high and the tall one is over seven feet tall. They have claws, two horns on their head, red eyes, and dark scaly skin. They look exactly like the demons I've seen in video games and anime.
"DEMONS! HELP! THEY'RE GOING TO KILL ME!"
The woman screams again. Jesus, do you have to be so dramatic?
"Demons, so you were hiding in the ceiling as I expected. There were holes in the ceiling near the blood splatters, after all. Prepare to die!"
The old man slashes the empty air in front of him at great speeds I can't follow. Moments later, the demons are cut into pieces. Holy shit! He just killed them like ants! He sheathes his katana shortly afterward.
"Now that matter is settled. It bewilders me a little that the seer was wrong this time… He said that the demons would manifest in members of the Hawxie household… Oh well. Lockdown is now officially over. Clean this mess up."
"Sir!"
"Thank you! You saved me! Now I can sleep well tonight…"
The woman says with a smile.
"I'm just doing my job. The master would be very upset with me if I did a poor job when he was gone. If you have any concerns or questions, come to my room."
"Where is that? I don't quite remember…"
"It is alright, you probably just need to rest especially after the trauma you experienced… My room is at the end of the other side of the building on the third floor, room 300."
"Oh, I just remembered! How silly of me. Well, if you'd excuse me."
What a carefree woman… She was panicked yelling "Demon, demons!" and now she seems completely fine… She walks away toward the stairs.
"What should I do with these two?"
The old man turns to me again. Huh? When did Lucy stop crying…? I don't remember.
"Hmm… that's right… now that both of their mothers passed away…"
Passed away?! My mother is dead?! What the fuck?! He turns to the maids standing nearby.
"You. You're the new recruit, right?"
"Uh-um, yes! Sir!"
"Great. Why don't you take charge of these two? You can use the same room they are currently being kept in, room 317."
"Yes! I'll be honored to, sir!"
A girl takes Lucy and me into her arms. She can't possibly even be 18 years old. How can she take care of us? I put my tiny hands up to her chest and feel almost nothing. Well, this sucks.
The rest of the day passes. The delicious warm milk I received from my mother is no longer an available food item. The maid feeds Lucy and I warm cow milk in baby bottles instead. At night, she tucks us in, turns off the light, and closes the door. I fall asleep and wake up some time later.
What should I do…?

The Patchwork Realms
Athos is a good dog. He likes frisbee, bacon, and his family (SmolFriend, Mom, and Dad). He's not so keen on falling through an interdimensional portal to a fantasy world where floating boxes tell you that you've just been given status as the 'Supreme Exemplar' of your species, a powerful package of abilities that includes human-level intelligence. Sure, being smart is nice but less so when it comes with the need to survive in a land made from bits of different dimensions stitched together like patches in a quilt. A thousand species, a thousand lands, sorcery and super science rubbing elbows, wars and intrigue everywhere...it's exhausting for a good dog who just wants to go home! Note that this is a work in progress with lots of fiddly numbers so I will occasionally need to go back and fix errors, and this might affect events of earlier chapters. I'll try to keep this to a minimum and will post a note whenever it happens. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
