《The Triumphs and Tribulations of Kai Jameson》Chap. 6

“I guess it worked. Although I didn’t get anything. You sure this is the right path?” Kai asked.
“Yes. Very certain.” Daniel’s smile could be seen by everyone on the training field. “Now Kai it is time to grind your skills up so that we can get you some PP. Let’s go to the obstacle course for your first work out.”
“Wait. I have some stat points. What should I do with them.” Kai followed Daniel’s example and stood from where they had sat beneath the trees.
“Well, from where you are now you are going to increase all of them so it doesn’t matter too much at this moment. But thinking about specializing early is never a bad thing. Your Protector path is pushing you towards the physical and particularly a tank role. If that’s something you wish to do then I would follow its lead and put points into your physical stats particularly Vitality and Endurance. Though you should not neglect your Mental stats as those will impact your future skill usage. How many stat points do you have to distribute?” The two men began to head towards the obstacle course.
“I have two to use towards Physical Defense stats and my eight points from the Newbie Path. I’m guessing Physical Defense stats are Vitality and Endurance?” Daniel nodded at this.
“Do higher stats help you train skills faster?” Kai asked before making his decision.
“Well. We don’t believe so. But we have never had a person train physical skills and spend their points on mental stats as that would hurt the person in the long run. Normally people are spending points on the stats they use the most. I can say that some of the skills are related. At a certain point of raising Agility you will reach a plateau of speed unless you increase your reaction. We believe this is because your body just doesn’t have the reaction speed to handle the max agility you could go. Most likely other stats play a role as well. Like perception affecting your ability to notice that you need to react if you’re at higher speeds. Things like that. You won’t have to worry about it for a bit but it’s something to think about.”

“So keep things balanced?” Kai laughed. He put the two Physical Def stats into Vitality and Endurance one each. With the other eight he put two into Control and Focus and three into Wisdom to get those more in line with others. The last point he placed into Intelligence to even it out with Wisdom since it was also considered a Mental Offense stat. After the changes he checked his status.

As Daniel and Kai approached the obstacle course a woman with a spear walked up. “Daniel you get a new test subject?”
Daniel laughed. “Alana, this is Kai. He came from the expansion zone and was just able to get the Pathless I path.” Kai watched this Alana’s face as Daniel said this. He noticed her eyebrows go higher and her eyes get a bit larger but not much else. “I had planned on getting his physical fitness skills a bit higher before I had you start to beat him to death.”
Kai laughed at this. “I’m pretty good with a sword. Plus I do have a gun.” The reaction he got was not what he expected, they both laughed.
Alana spoke first, “Unless you have some really great gun Skills,” Kai noticed the capital S in her voice, “then you probably can’t even scratch me with your gun. But we should try it. Haven’t had a chance in a long time since bullets aren’t something we use around here.”

Kai laughed and moved towards the obstacle course but Daniel stopped and agreed. “It will also be a great way to raise your Gun Mastery skill. Also, lets just train for the rest of the day. Don’t spend any of your PP that you gain.”
And with those words the second craziest day of Kai’s life kicked into high gear. He tried shooting Alana and missed until the last bullet when she stood still and let him shoot her. The bullet of course did nothing.
He ran the training course until exhaustion when he was given a strange yellow potion and told to run it again. Three hours later he was dead on his feet and Daniel finally relented.
“At least it was a productive few hours. Tomorrow I’ll expect you to train all day with whoever Alana assigns you. We should be able to finish the full Pathless within the next few days, not to mention getting your skills high enough to unlock more Paths.” Daniel walked away with those words.

Kai didn’t spend any of his points but he was excited to see what tomorrow would bring. He followed a man that Alana had called over. They arrived at a longhouse that turned out to be a barracks for those with no house of their own. Kai found the first empty bed and collapsed.
