《Rebirth of Fallen》Prologue 1

‘Death is just a beginning’, statement Theo had on mind more and more in recent weeks as he stood in the darkness of his dreams.

What would it be like to get another chance? Some say you would live the same life, ‘people just don’t change that easily’, I don’t think so. I would be different, with a chance to hold the sword and wield magic I could make my life mean something.

Looking around Theo saw battlefield full of humans, orcs and other races killing each other for dominance. Standing in front of the spear-wielding soldiers preparing to charge them, he was ready for the clash, stomach churning, shuddering with excitement his hands clenched.

I could lead them, show them the way, kill those in my way and carve the path to the glory and riches. I don’t want to leave this place back to that world.

As he turned around surveying the darkness, breeze touched his skin. Startled he spun around, a spike of fear and hope rose, maybe this time it is real, maybe this time I can leave everything behind!

A speck of light shined in the complete darkness of his sleepless dream. Taking a step forward he hesitated, slowly walking towards the unknown, yet somehow familiar.

It is probably my imagination anyway, another one of the countless dreams which ends up in sweaty bed, alone, mortified, forced to face reality.

Stopping, his head lowered as he was staring at his feet.

Maybe I can just stay here a little longer, looking up he couldn’t help but stare, what was just light a moment ago, was now full body window just a few steps in front of him.

Spamming four meters wide it showed him his biggest dreams and terrors at the same time. Strange runes ran along the black rim in patterns of obscure pictures of men and women.

The dirt road he found himself standing on diverged in two directions, to the right was a paved road going to the edge of the window, and then disappearing into the glass, portraying the steal and concrete buildings of his city. People milling around, running from one place to another without any obvious reason.

I will have to come back to that eventually.

The left side provided a much more compelling scene, an army of green-skinned bulky monsters with animalistic looking humanoids marching towards a human city.

Siege maybe? I could help that city, give me a sword and shield and I would fight these monsters!

Taking a step towards the left side he stared at the display of horror that would be terrifying to any sane person, yet Theo found himself taking one step after another closer to the shimmering glass.

Please, his voice wavered, don’t wake me up yet, let me enjoy this more.

Rising his hand, numbing feeling rose as if he slept the wrong way on it, hindering his movement.

Please!

Upon touch the window was cold, unwavering, transforming into the mirror, showing the face of a man whose hopes were ruthlessly crushed.

Pushing into the mirror didn’t help, the cold feeling was gone and he could hear the familiar buzz announcing time to wake up.

Filling his lungs with cold air before sign escaped his lips, Theo took a step back. As his body turned, his hand didn’t move, eyes going wide, fear assaulted his entire being as black clawed appendage gripped his forearm, wanting to wake up he closed his eyes and screamed.

Face with dozens of eyes emerged from the now open window staring him down. Feeling his legs wobble and warmth seeps down his left leg Theo’s eyes burst with tears and screams echoed as the hideous face with a smile of rotten teeth dragged him through the window into the darkness.
