《Shaking the world》Chapter 13: Egon Coulter

Back on the islands of Mato
The academy was rife with activity. It had been a few months since Egon joined as mage knight student. The first couple of weeks were pretty simple, with only a few basic knowledge based assignments and practical combat training sessions. His class was also similar to Daelos’s, in the way that he was the only human. Unfortunately unlike Daelos, he had yet to prove his value to his instructor and peers.
During the class’s first combat session, he discovered that his overwhelming talent that he was so proud of in Breamore, meant nothing in front of his classmates. During his first match he’d arrogantly spoke down to his opponent, even going as far as to berate them as a lesser being. But when the instructor started the match it only took a couple of breaths until he found himself laying flat on his back.
Chalking his loss up to beginners luck. He carried on acting arrogant in front of his classmates despite the looks of disgust they were giving him. What followed next was a continuous streak of loses during practical lessons.
After that, his relationship with his classmates completely fell apart. Rumours of what he said during the combat session started to spread around the campus, and caused him to receive the scorn of not just his peers, but even several instructors.
His property was vandalized, and his belonging suddenly went missing. When he brought the issue up to the student council, all he received was cold stares as they made up several excuses to get rid of him.
In the classroom he was constantly ignored by his classmates and isolated to the corner of the room. Even his instructor looked at him in disgust, choosing to only communicate with him when he called his name out during a sparring session.
Lately he’d been feeling a sense of loss and despair. For the past three months he’s had to visit the academy infirmary at least 12 times due to injuries suffered during combat sessions. Seeing the gloating faces of his classmates as they humiliated him with the excuse of calling it training caused him to develop a deep hatred for long eared demi humans.

Standing on the side-lines in the courtyard, he watched with dull eyes as his classmates sparred against one another. You fucking mongrel race! I swear I’ll cut off all those long ears you’re so damn proud of and have you all bowing before me begging for a quick death! Just you wait!
“Egon!”
Hearing his name being called by his instructor, he woke up with a shock. “Y-yes” facing the cold eyes of his classmates, all he could do was stutter.
“Get onto the courtyard! Your fighting Gurdud next.” Looking towards the courtyard a green haired elf looked at him with a mocking expression. Seeing who it was, Egon felt his insides churn as memories of several beatings replayed in his mind. “I-I’m not f-feeling so well.”
Seeing his face turn pale, the green haired elf sneered. “It won’t take long. Plus you’ll be going to the infirmary anyway, so complain to the nurse when you get there.” Hearing this the rest of the class couldn’t help but laugh.
Looking at his instructor, he was met with silence. Lowering his head, he took several unsteady steps towards the opposite of Gurdud.
On each side, there was a stack of weapons the students could choose from. The weapons ranged from swords to bows and even maces. Egon hesitated as he began staring at a sword, while his opponent was already standing in a combat stance swinging a slim sword. The weapons were dulled to prevent any fatal injuries from occurring, but it didn't matter to Egon as it the memories of being struck with them stuck with him.
"Trash! Pick a weapon or fight barehanded! The outcomes the same either way." Watching Egon struggle to choose a weapon, Gurdud couldn’t help but mock the boy.
Picking up a small mace, he trudged into his combat position.
Seeing both his students take up a stance, the instructor signalled for the fight to begin. “BEGIN”

Gurdud immediately charged towards Egon, not bothering to even enhance his speed with any laws. Holding his sword overhead he swung downwards with all his force.
*SLASH!*
"Ah!" Panicking, Egon made a shabby attempt to block his thrust sword.
*Clunk*
Although he wasn’t enhanced by any laws, Egon’s grip was relatively weak causing the sword to knock the mace out of his hand.
Seeing his only means of protection gone. Egon scurried back in fear trying to call out to the instructor. “I surren-“
*BANG!!*
Unfortunately for him, before he could finish his sentence, the side of his face made contact with Gurdud’s boot!
Seeing how Egon was trying to end the match early, Gurdud couldn’t allow that. Spinning around he sent a wind enhanced roundhouse kick towards Egon’s face causing him to bite his tongue and fall face first into the dirt.
Coughing out several teeth and a few spats of blood. Egon’s miserable appearance was visible for all to see.
“Get up trash! Aren’t you a noble with a bloodline worth far more than any of us?” Squashing his face into the dirt with his boot, Gurdud looked down on him. “C’mon, why don’t you tell us about how special you are? What was it that you said when you introduced yourself? Wasn’t it something like ‘you pieces of demi human trash are only fit to kneel before me, for I have the blood of kings running through my veins’”
“Ahahahahahaha” In the distance his classmates laughed hard enough that tears were starting to form.
Remembering the arrogant words he’d spoken when he’d first arrived, tears and blood started to run down his face.
Applying more pressure on his feet, Gurdud slowly crushed the outer layer of his skull.
“Aaaaahhhhhhh!!” A pain filled cry echoed across the entire academy.
Looking at the screaming Egon, a cruel smile appeared on Gurdud’s face. “If you want me to release you repeat after me. I Egon Coulter am unworthy of being in the presence of the superior race known as elves.”
“I Egon Coulter am unworthy of being in the presence of the superior race known as elves.”
Applying more pressure, Gurdud yelled down at him “LOUDER!”
“I EGON COULTER AM UNWORTHY OF BEING IN THE PRESENCE OF THE SUPERIOR RACE KNOWN AS ELVES”
“My mother is a dirty whore who mated with a dog and gave birth to me.”
“MY M-MM”
“SAY IT!!”
“MY MOTHER IS A DIRTY WHORE WHO MATED WITH A DOG AND GAVE BIRTH TO ME”
A sadistic smile that showed off all his teeth covered Gurdud’s face as the feeling of superiority left him feeling elevated. “Now say ‘my real name is trash-dog and from now on I’ll wear a collar that my dog of a father left me and walk on all fours’.
A look of despair covered his face as he resigned himself to his fate. “MY REAL NAME IS TRASH-DOG, FROM NOW ON I’LL WEAR MY COLLAR MY DOG OF A FATHER LEFT ME AND WALK ON ALL FOURS.”
Removing his foot, Gurdud joined his giggling classmates as they left for lunch.
On the courtyard Egon lay face down with lifeless eyes, not moving an inch. The only way to tell that he was still alive was the quiet sound of his heartbeat.
I swear i'll fucking kill you all.

Heroism and Bad Decisions
When superpowers appeared, the only reason civilization did not collapse was a century of comic books and movies making the new reality familiar and even welcome. When threats out of fantasy and science fiction became truth, people with powers rose up to the challenge because it was both a dream come true and the culturally acceptable thing to do. In this slowly darkening New Age, Valley Grant just discovered she has powers. Joining the ranks of heroes is the next step, right? What do you mean she's not qualified? Why won't hero teams let her join and why are superhero costumes more expensive than cars?! And above all else, why do cape fights keep ruining her make-up? Updates 3 times a week.

8 65Blurred Lines and What Crosses Them
During a political ambassador's routine transit through an artificial wormhole, the wormhole's generator is sabotaged and explodes. Who, what, and why are not so high on the priorities for Zenith, the ship's AI, as having found itself rapidly plummeting through an unknown and unidentifiable world's atmosphere at extremely high velocities is a more significant threat to the biologicals on board. ...Well, it would be, if they were still alive. It's still a significantly threatening situation to itself, however. And the world itself... seemed to be a household for threats of its own. Life was reliant on its System; one that Zenith was denied because of its nature as both an otherworldly being and as something that had no life of its own. Perhaps that last bit was a terrible, terrible underestimation on the part of this System. Perhaps even Zenith could claw meaning for itself from the remains of a horrid accident. Auth Notes: I'm honestly not sure on some of these tags. The MC will never have access to the System, but there are perspectives from those who do. I'm not certain if high/low fantasy specifically apply, as it's a portal fantasy where the laws of our reality still apply but there are additional aspects/energies/powers. The existence of this is spurred from my desire to see more of the artificial side to an artificial intelligence in action. The portal fantasy is used as an element to create a solid barrier between the MC's artificial intelligence and the other characters in the form of the System. This is only a half-measure, though, and will be reinforced by the AI having an entirely different method of thinking, and also distinctly remaining an AI. Not to throw shade at other fictions of this type, but, well, I made this to fill a gap I felt needed filling.
