《Gold Inc.》Chapter 12 - Next Project

Phobos really felt that Hera and Eve had no flaw in their bodies. However, it may be different for themselves. He didn’t know about Eve but Hera with her word representing Perfect had made small changes to her body.
Phobos didn’t know if that was perfection in a personal view or an unbiased universal perfection. But he was more inclined to the former. After all, he wasn’t sure there was such a thing as impartial perfection.
That aside when Phobos saw the changes in Hera he felt that maybe Eve had things she wanted to change as well. But he really didn’t see any flaws in her. In reality, he was able to appreciate all kinds of females and their different charms.
However, that was a bit of a twisted view because Eve was carefully curating the women she brought to his bed. Although they were in all shapes and sizes, they would universally be praised as beautiful women. And the ones he approached on his own volition were on an even higher standard.
After all, it was hard for a below-average person to even enter his gaze. It was not that Phobos was discriminating against them but just having been accustomed to a certain standard of beauty. Phobos has never felt that an average woman by most standards was ugly. He just thought that it was not the style of women he liked.
Eve had warped Phobos’s view to such an extent that he didn’t realize that it was abnormal. The most simple example being when he felt that Diana was a beautiful woman but didn’t see her as anything special.
She had been offered a lot of money to serve at the VIP room in the convention for her outstanding beauty. She was being offered a lot of modeling and acting works just for her appearance but she was unsure if she wanted that life.
Phobos however felt that Diana was just a bit beautiful. The same was true for Anna, Megan and Alice. But if someone with an attraction to women were to see the collection of females in the restaurant he would instantly be short of breath if the person was weak in heart and may even faint.
It was strange that so many beautiful women had gathered in the same place. In reality, it wasn't that strange. Anna was carefully selected by Eve to be a business partner. But Anna was in fact selected as a future prospect to ease Phobos in a long-term relationship with other people besides Eve and Hera.
Eve was going to use this trip as a starting point to loosen Phobos’s ideas about relationships. Even if this was a spontaneous trip planned by Phobos and not even knowing that she would be coming to this city, it didn’t matter. Eve had found such women throughout most major cities in Europe.
Megan on the other hand was genetically related to Anna so it was reasonable to be just as beautiful. Alice being hired by Anna wasn’t that strange. Beautiful people tended to favor one another even if subconsciously. So three of them gathering in the restaurant wasn’t that weird.
Eve and Hera were with Phobos before the change so there was nothing strange there as well. The only coincidence was Diana. Her being in the proximity of Phobos when the change happened was a total accident.
But Phobos didn’t feel any abnormalities being surrounded by so many beauties. After all, it wasn’t that much different from his daily life.
As Phobos didn’t find anything to change in Eve based on his preference, he had the idea of connecting his mind with hers. If he used her mind to lead his improvement ability he wouldn’t have to decide on what to change.

Phobos connected to Eve's consciousness but as she had fallen asleep after vigorous exercise. Her mind wasn’t all there however her subconscious was in perfect form.
Phobos synced with Eve through the link and physical touch using his analytical ability. Then he let Eve unconscious guide his ability to make changes in her physical appearance.
However, Phobos somewhat limited that change. In one night it would be so small that it would be mostly unnoticed. He felt that it would be better to ask Eve’s conscious self if she wanted for him to use his ability to help her improve herself.
Phobos for now focused more on improving Eve's physical abilities. He felt that there was a small physical change with her ability awakening and more so when she formed a word but it wasn’t that big.
Phobos felt that at the least he should improve her to his current physical status even if that would take some time because he didn’t have access to the unlimited free energy flowing in the world. But it wouldn’t take long either.
Hera on the other hand, Phobos left alone. It was not that he was treating them differently but that it didn’t make much sense. Hera’s ability was similar to his but a lot stronger in the self-improvement or more correctly perfection aspect. So it was redundant to use his ability on her.
It was not that there wouldn’t be any improvement but felt more appropriate to directly inject back the energy he refined to her through the link. Phobos’s intention from the start was to send most of the refined energy back to Hera and Eve. He was holding most of it at the moment so that he would be able to faster reach a state of refining all the thought energy they were sending.
Having thought that, when Phobs went to sleep he did send half of it to Hera and used the other half to improve Eve. His ability didn’t have the best efficiency when asleep. Even though he was almost totally unconscious when using his ability and fully concentrating, it was different. But that inefficiency was of course improving as every other aspect of his ability.
The city was having some changes as Phobos was embracing the two beautiful women in his sleep. That however didn’t matter much to him because it was one of his most relaxing sleep since he can remember himself.
If Phobos saw how people that had gained abilities are just starting to explore how to use them he would feel a bit of pity for how slow they were progressing but wouldn't be moved much.
Early in his life, he understood that people are born with different fortunes. And although it was not correct to lord over people who are less fortunate but feeling bad that he was more fortunate was not the right move either.
When Phobos was still small he found out that sometimes feeling bad for those that had less than him was a bit of self-torture. He even tried to be charitable but that didn’t work out so well.
Most didn’t appreciate it. A small part was even aggressive. Then his father taught him that it was easier to be charitable by making jobs available to the people rather than outright giving them funds.
Phobos learned that if you have better fortune than others as long as you appreciate it and don’t take it for a given and looking down on other people it was enough. There are too many misfortunes in the world. Even if he had access to all the money in the world he can’t fix them.

On top of that everybody has different lives and different aspirations. As long as you live your life without causing too much inconvenience to others that would do fine.
The same applied with the powers they had awakened. Phobos had already learned how to handle the power that most people didn’t have in the form of money but most people didn’t have that luxury.
That is why Phobos didn’t feel much different than in his past. He was mostly calm about his newly gained power and wasn’t ‘liberated’ as some other people felt.
Most of the chaos that was about to happen would be a consequence of this newfound liberation. The mutants were just a small part of the equation. It was already happening all over the place. Just not in Phobos’s sight.
Phobos woke up early in the morning. The sun was just starting to rise. A few minutes later than him Eve and Hera awoke as well. But they had no intention of moving and just snuggled closer to him.
Phobos looked down and didn’t feel like being considerate today. While sleeping he had an inspiration of what his next project would be. So he stood up without minding the minor protest from the two beautiful women.
After Phobos took an improvised shower in one of the bathrooms he dressed up. Standing in front of the windows he moved the blinds a little and saw that there was a small crowd moving about. He wasn’t that interested, however.
For now, Phobos had to finish his improvement of the thought energy refinement and he could start his new project. He took away his gaze from the outside and looked towards Eve that was stretching while wearing nothing.
“How are you feeling? Any problems with your body?”
“Mmm~. Feeling soo good. That was the best sleep in my life. My body feels so light. I have the feeling I can run two marathons.”
Phobos was sure that nothing was wrong with her body but asked just in case. Looking at her jumping around trying out her body with no regard to her nudity for some reason brought a small smile to Phobos’s face. Since connecting with Eve and Hera with the link and feeling almost everything they were, was bringing him invisibly closer to them.
Phobos never had any barriers with them. He gave all his trust to them and always told them everything honestly with nothing hidden. And as he told them, he was severely limiting himself from feeling affection for them.
For Phobos trust and affection were different. Like some bosses could trust their employees to finish the job perfectly, that didn’t mean they had any affection for them. It meant that until that trust was broken the employees would be reused. Even if it was broken the boss wouldn’t be devastated. He would just move on to the next employee.
That is why Phobos always had the distinction in his mind that Eve and Hera are his employees. They weren’t lovers that happened to work for him. They were his employees that happened to have special assignments.
In reality, the distinction didn’t mean anything for the dynamic they functioned in but it was only Phobos’s self-preservation tactic. If he was to be betrayed by them he wouldn’t be emotionally hurt because he restricted himself from having feelings for them.
Even if Phobos were to develop such a feeling if he held strong to this distinction it meant that he expected for them to someday leave him. Then the logic followed as such - If he had that expectation, it wouldn't be a surprise. If it wasn’t a surprise, his mood wouldn't fluctuate so much.
Of course, being able to feel what they were didn’t mean that he would change his attitude. Phobos was just a bit more relaxed. After all, the link didn’t change much. Being able to feel what they were didn’t mean he could control them. Even if Phobos could theoretically control them with his ability by improving them to his desire, he would never do it.
If they wanted to leave he would never obstruct them. The link only gave him foresight if it was about to happen. Naturally, Phobos didn’t read their minds non-stop. He had to concentrate to be able to even read their general feeling. However, if they were in a stressful situation or making a difficult decision he should be able to feel it.
Yesterday Phobos didn’t feel Hera was fighting the mutant because he was new to the link but he felt when she was deliberating something behind him even while he was concentrating on improving the solar panels. However, he didn’t pry because he was giving her space and he thought that Hera taking some distance from him was a foregone conclusion.
Phobos looked at Hera, who was ignoring Eve’s jumping around and was getting dressed after she returned from washing up. He didn’t mean to ask her about how her body felt because there wasn’t much that could go wrong with her own ability. Phobos was more interested in her mind.
He followed the link and connected to her conscious space. This is where Phobos saw the patchwork that was her mind space last time. This time the whole space was a lot more beautiful. For some reason, he was still the major focus of her mind but in a more natural way.
Hera’s mind space was represented by a big tree that was sprawling into the sky. And the roots of that tree were where Phobos was placed in Hera’s mind. The meaning it had was that every idea that sprouted in Hera’s mind had Phobos as the core.
Phobos who was looking at this didn’t quite understand what he was looking at but seeing the natural picture in her mind he was feeling happy for her. Phobos didn’t go in-depth to read Hera’s mind or feelings but just looking at her mind space he could see a huge improvement from before.
Phobos took away his concentration from Hera and focused on Eve. This time however he wasn’t worried for Eve’s psychological wellbeing but was just feeling curious about what her mind space looked like. Phobos was not sure what a mind space is. Most likely a representation of a human's mind in a way Phobos could perceive.
Eve’s mind space was literally that. It was represented by a vision of the boundless outer space. Every idea was represented as a celestial object. And the vast emptiness that was space and was hugging those Ideas was how Eve’s mind represented Phobos.
Phobos looked at the beautiful vast galaxy that represented Eve’s mind and appreciated it. He could somehow see how Hera and Eve’s minds worked. Hera’s thought process like a tree was always connected to one another. She had a core and built upon that core with logic to form an idea or a thought.
On the other hand, Eve’s thought process was like a new galaxy. There were flying thoughts everywhere. One could smash into another and form a new one. There were fundamental laws but that didn’t mean much. The only thing that was ever-present was the space.
Phobos backed out of Eve’s mind and stopped paying attention to her beautiful body that was doing various poses. She was still fascinated with the changes in her body. However, she wasn’t that surprised. The link didn’t work only one way. Eve knew that it was Phobos’s contribution that changed her body.
Phobos didn’t know how the link worked for them but he didn’t care. After all, he really never hid anything from them. In reality, he never hid anything from anyone. Phobos was living a straightforward life. If someone didn’t like something he was doing he didn’t care at all.
Hera had already left the room and while Eve was still in he ignored her and started improving the refinement of the energy they were sending. It took him more than four hours to reach an equilibrium of the amount being sent and being refined. Phobos had been using all the energy being sent his way in these four hours but as of now he only kept twenty percent. The rest he sent back to Eve and Hera.
When he came to Eve was long gone. Phobos thought that he should find a more efficient way to utilize most of his mind on assisting his ability. He was wasting too much time when he was wholly concentrating on improving something. But that was the exchange.
He could improve something faster and his functionality dropped. Or Phobos could improve stuff without involving his brain but the time and energy it would take to improve an item would be way more.
The human brain was an exquisite piece of biology. Phobos's was especially impressive. It was hard to decide on which approach was more correct. Phobos liked his free time but disliked inefficiencies more.
Phobos left that problem for later. Now he went downstairs and entered the main hall of the restaurant. There was no one there but a table was full of all kinds of food. Phobos didn’t shy away and started eating a bit of everything. When he was done he entered the back area of the restaurant.
Phobos was about to do a basement. He thought it was weird that the building wasn’t built with a basement in the first place. However, it was a little tricky. He wanted to use his ability to make the basement. And while he had curved a few of the rules his ability worked upon to make it work when it really shouldn’t, he was wondering if this time it would work as well.
The main rule of his ability was that there had to be something to improve. And obviously, there wasn’t a basement. There wasn’t even a prototype of a basement from which he could expand. So he had to make one. A shoddy prototype that is.
Phobos found a normal nail hammer in a tool room and held it with all his strengths and swung it onto the ground. There was a bang and there was a crack in the floor. However, at the same time, the handle of the hammer broke apart. Phobos found that this would be a little more difficult than he thought.
At the least, he wanted to create a meter-long hole to use as a basement prototype. His ability may be able to work regardless of how big the hole was but it was mainly dependent on his imagination. Even if he tried hard he could never admit to himself that a cracked floor was a prototype for a basement.
Phobos could once again see that the main limiter of his ability was himself and not the ability itself.
