《Marked (The Crystal Saga series book 2)》Prologue: Down

Durango, Old Colorado in the year of 3621
In the darkness of the night, the alien ship hovered over the wooded area looking for anything that moved down below. Its bright, white light cut through the misty fog that enveloped the dense woods. Animals of all sizes were hunkering down in fear, while hiding under bushes and fallen logs.
Somehow, in their primitive minds, they knew why this large, shiny object was here. Their primal instinct kept them safe and alive. The bright light that shined through the darkened branches and leaves, at last, it found a small fox that was too slow to hide in time. The animal’s wide, black eyes gleamed in the dark; mesmerized. As the light tracker engulfed the fox, instantly, his little body lifted off the ground, and flew through the air toward the cold starry night sky.
As soon as the ship had its prey, quickly cutting off the light source, quietly it made its way in the direction of a larger area, where flat roofs and small cluttered buildings were visible just at the edge of the forest. Silently hovering over the small town, its bright tractor beam was looking again for anything or anybody that moved down below. However, the small establishment was dark and strangely quiet.
Passing over the metal rooftops, the white light kept searching for humans that lived in this small town. This was not the first time they collected from this place and this time would be no different either. Not seeing any movements, the alien ship slowly descended to scan through the whole area. The closer it got, its large body, which almost covered about half of the town, resonated off from the top of the roofs, shaking them slightly, and then more violently.
After a few minutes, the ship’s scanner suddenly picked up several movements from all around the town. At the same time, unexpectedly, from all corners of the place, small, but extremely fast objects were coming toward the metal body. On impact, they made a bright, loud sound as they hit the belly of the ship.

The unexpected impact of the missiles rocked the large body. When the second round of missiles hit it again, this time the bottom of the ship opened up with a huge explosion sending the ship downward toward the edge of town. When it hit the grass-covered ground, a powerful explosion with its defeating sound brightened up the area. Within a few seconds, the large metal body was engulfed with luminous orange flames. From all over the town, all at once, loud and exuberant cheers were heard. People were jumping up and down with joy, while admiring the great destruction they had caused, just a few moments ago.
In front of the large crowd, stood one man with a rocket launcher still in his hands. His young face proudly looked toward the bright orange flames, which were now completely engulfing the alien ship, bringing an extreme heat that washed over the area where they stood. Then the heat slowly subsided and the coolness of the night returned. Behind him lit by the orange glow were astonished and happy faces watching this great distraction. Many hands patted his back and shoulders, and as he looked around within the crowd, his dark blue eyes searched for the two very important people in his life, his little daughter and his beautiful wife.
Rushing toward him, her small body quickly made her way through the crowded street, while her mother followed behind. Flying into his open arms, and with gleeful bright green eyes, she looked into his with excitement. Wrapping her little arms around his neck and with a big smile, she planted kisses on his happy face.
Holding him tight, she leaned her head onto his shoulder, while her mother embraced them both. Staring at the smoldering wreckage, this night, she thought, made my daddy smile and this was something she loved to see on her father’s usually stern face.

For Joshua Still, Skills were the lifeblood of his business. He wanted to understand them, collect many of them, and teach a few of them.
