《Warfare's Ultimate Frontier》Vol 6 Chapter 4

Baron had become such a renowned figure in the Egyptian community that even the best sought him out. With the invitation from Ramesses reaching everyone, all the other influential figures began seeking him out as well. Despite all the great offers, Baron still had to honor his first invite. The terms were as follows between Baron and Ramesses. Such a simulation would become public for all to see, as would any other fight between them in the future.

Even if Baron did not hail from Egypt, he still hoped to help them prosper. After all, they were not enemies. The only enemy on the planet was the Jordsand community. Having a conversation with Ramesses revealed that some of Egypt's best had failed to complete Luca's challenge. This loss was a huge one for them. Otherwise, the new generation would have had a hard time gaining as much power as they did as fast as they did.

The setting of the simulation was the Battle of Kadesh. It was to be a battle of pure strategy with no outside blueprints being allowed. Battling like this would show the difference in tactical knowledge between the two. This battle at Kadesh was the earliest battle that had recorded strategies and formations. Not to mention the biggest chariot battle ever fought. The two forces clashing were Ramesses II's Egyptian forces against King Muwatalli of the Hittite empire and his brother Hattusili. Afterward, both the Egyptians and Hittites' armies had weakened. This outcome led to the formation of the first recorded treaty. Who could have known the two leaders would still be together in the afterlife?

A summarised account of what happened at the Battle of Kadesh in real life is as follows. Hittite spies fed lies to Ramesses before he had his army together. When one of Ramesses' army divisions came close to the camp, the Hittites launched a surprise chariot attack and were quite successful. After routing the Egyptian division, the Hittite chariots turned their attention to the Egyptian encampment.

At first, the Hittites were successful, but after another Egyptian division regrouped with the camp, the tides turned. At one point, the young Ramesses had to fight for his life. After gathering his guards and leading a few charges, the Hittites retreated from the camp. The final Egyptian division came soon after and threatened the Hittites from the rear, so Muwatalli ordered a retreat. Both suffered massive casualties, and there was no clear winner.

When the simulation began, Ramesses, who commanded the Egyptian forces, would not repeat the same mistakes. He gathered the majority of his army and marched together as one to confront Baron. Additionally, he had strengthened his intelligence network so he wouldn't be reliant upon others for information. There was one more matter he had to address. His logistics were lacking, which was another reason he had to retreat from the battle of Kadesh as well.

As for Baron, the Hittite side had just gathered 19 allies in the form of regional kings into one force before an unexpected presence came forth. Baron did not expect to meet Roxi's kin here, Cornelius Victor Blaze. An individual who fought his way through death to return to Earth. Now he stood in front of Baron, in 1274 BC in Egyptian/Hittite land.

"You're Cornelius," Baron couldn't believe his eyes.

"Who? My name is Mitanni, king of Hanilgalbat,"

"..." Baron was speechless. Quite obviously, he knew who the person in front of him was, but the other side was trying to hide it? "Does Blaze sound familiar?" He tried again.

"Ah, this must be a simulation then. Forgive me. I'm still trying to learn my powers. I assume you are someone from Planet 4? I mean, this coming war is the largest I've seen yet."

"I will continue to call you Cornelius, and yes, I am from Planet 4. What are you doing here?"

"Since you can recognize me, we have probably had some interaction in your past, right?"

"Yes, your great-granddaughter, one of them, is my greatest ally in the afterlife."

"Alright, have I talked to you about the calamity that those who are reborn have to face?"

"Yes, I do recall that you mentioned something along those lines," Baron recalled.

"Well, that's what I'm here trying to figure out. I've been living around these lands for at least a century now, but I'm not quite sure what this trial is. Do you have any clue?"

Baron turned his gaze away, closed his eyes, and thought for a little bit. There was only one thing that he could think of that fit this description. "I think it has something to do with the Late Bronze Age collapse. Egypt will become considerably weaker, the Hittite empire will collapse, as will the Mycenaean Kingdoms, Babylonia, and most cities around this region will soon be devoid of human life."

"That certainly sounds like a calamity. However, this is a simulation, so I guess I won't be the one to worry about it. Also, your presence means that I most likely passed my trial. So that's good news. Say, can you tell me the future? From what I have seen, it seems like war and greed are the only things driving humanity forward."

"Well, that statement is true three thousand years into the future. From the way I see it, that might be the only constant worth mentioning."

"That is depressing, but what can you do. Anyway, enough about me. Let's get this show started."

"Indeed, go gather Muwatalli, Hattusili, and the other 18 regional kings. Tonight, we plan our offensive. Tomorrow, we fight."

After Cornelius left, Baron began pouring over the maps around the area. The Orontes River separated the two camps. Crossing the river would require time, given the chariots' circumstances. To the West stood the proud and powerful Egyptian camp with Ramesses' 4 divisional armies. To the East stood Baron and his twenty king alliance. Further downstream, the river split into two at approximately 90 degrees. Just south of the split lay the city of Kadesh.

At this point, whoever attacked first held the initiative. Therefore, Baron could either cross the river and launch a direct attack or stay back and defend. The two contending forces had roughly the same number of men at around 25,000 to 35,000 men and approximately two thousand chariots for Ramesses and twice that for Baron. Keeping track of numbers with the current logistics of this diverse army was not an easy task.

In the end, Baron opted to send five kings and their infantry-heavy army led by Cornelius and Hattusili to cross the river downstream and flank Ramesses. However, they would further split up into two groups. Cornelius and two other kings would lay in wait to the south of the Egyptian crossing point. Meanwhile, Hattusili and the remaining king would loop behind the Egyptian camp.

These five would use multiple lone horseriders to ascertain the movements of the Egyptian army from afar and report back to either Hattusili or Cornelius. Each would make their own decision on when to attack. Cornelius would move to attack once the Egyptians were trying to cross the river. Hattusili would attack the weakened camp. That said, Hattusili would only try to inflict as much damage as possible over a couple of days, not destroy it.

This point was made clear to Cornelius, Hattusili, and three other loyal kings in a private meeting. This group would have a total of around 8,000 men and 500 chariots between them. Not long after, they made preparations for their armies to mobilize. Since it was dusk and that each king had set up their camp away from each other, it was easy to move out without being noticed.

After the strike force left, Baron had messengers deliver messages to the remaining kings about formalities, vague plans, and how each king should organize their army. He only did this because it would be busy work for the kings, and they wouldn't have time to find out that a few other kings had left. Even though an alliance bound them together, just one defector could prove catastrophic.

Baron had some information networks, but it was nowhere near the level he usually had. Despite this, it was the best he could do. Since the battle could start at any moment, he had three kings patrol up and down the river. If the Egyptians made any move, the others would mobilize as well.

Baron spent all of his time training the armies and getting them to an acceptable standard. Thankfully, the Egyptians did not try anything during this time. Perhaps Ramesses was also preparing his army the same way Baron was. After all, the experience Ramesses had during his reign as Pharoah paled in comparison to what he knew now.

At this point, it was a matter of patience. Baron had made preparations for when Ramesses inevitably crossed. However, Baron decided to implement one more strategy. On the fifth day, he had one more king cross the river to cut off the enemy supply route. One of the weakest kings got attacked just before night fell. Though the skirmish was brief, it left a lot of damage.

Baron immediately had a sizable force go after the assailants as soon as he heard the news but to no avail. With the possibility of an enemy attack at any time, everyone was on guard. Later that night, Baron received intel that the Egyptians were making their way across the river, but even more north than their furthest patrols.

This circumstance would have been an opportunity to fight a distracted enemy. However, given the recent assault and the dangers of unknown enemies in the night, Baron could only wait until dawn to make a move. An hour before sunrise, Baron received news that both Hattusili and Cornelius had made their moves. They were successful but could not continue to fight because of the difference in numbers.

Originally, Baron was supposed to help out Cornelius in the river crossing. The current situation was not a great start to the simulation. Nevertheless, Baron and his alliance moved quickly, packing everything up and marching towards Ramesses. The two armies faced each other, but both were not in their formations. After a little bit of rearranging, both sides were ready to fight.

Baron decided not to waste time and sent in one thousand chariots to clash with the Egyptians head-on. Two more groups of one thousand chariots each also headed out at this time: one went left, and one went right. Their purpose was to attack from the sides. Soon after the chariots left, the infantry also charged forward to clean up the mess that the chariots would leave.

In response to this, Ramesses had his archers let loose a seemingly endless barrage of arrows. The charioteers naturally raised their shields in defense. Once they got close enough to the enemy ranks, the archers would not shoot any longer. For his next move, Ramesses sent out his chariots as well. However, the ones he sent out were chariots with a driver and an archer. These forces would run around the battlefield and try to take out all enemies from a distance.

Ramesses continued by stacking his infantry into multiple densely packed formations to support each other and hopefully stop the advance of the chariots. This tactic was crude but can be effective if done right. Although the chariots managed to do a great deal to the formation, many were ultimately unable to break through. That was when Ramesses unleashed his melee chariots to charge through Baron's infantry while they were still catching up.

At this moment, three forces appeared without warning. One of them was Cornelius' forces, where they had trouble crossing the river downstream. Another was Hattusili's forces that managed to cross the river just behind the Egyptians and started fighting right away. Another was the mysterious army that had ambushed one of the kings last night. This final group flanked Baron's army and began to rush straight to Baron's position.
