《Runa & Luna》Chapter 9 - The Literature Club

It had been already a week after Riel got drunk and had to impose on the Lagandas. It was Saturday. Yes, Riel’s first day as an adviser ended up on a Saturday.

“Tsch. I didn’t know that those foolish literature students usually request Saturday activities.”

The primary reason was that the school has a lot fewer students during Saturdays. As a result, the school would be quieter and more peaceful. That sense of tranquility is perfect for a club that requires a ton of concentration.

“I heard that they usually write their stories using their mobile phones, and sometimes on a laptop if available.”

Riel had already planned ahead of time the system that he would use in bringing out the potential in the students of the particular club.

Riel had to wake up by 7 am so he could prepare. By 8 am, he had already set out and by 8:30, he had arrived at the school. He went to the director’s office first to inform the bearded old man of his attendance. He didn’t have a need to do so but decided to be on the formal side just once.

“It’s locked… I guess he’s not coming today.”

He then went to the literature club right after.

“It’s empty…”

None of his students have arrived yet. He was the first one to come, and since he was bored, he figured that it wouldn’t be bad to explore a little.

“Oh! This classroom has a floating shelf.”

He was surprised to see that his club room had a floating shelf since that room was also supposed to be shared with another class of students during class hours. His curiosity got ahead of him and he began searching for interesting books to read.

“There’s a lot of books here. Oh! A manga?!”

Riel had found something. It seemed to be an innocent manga at first. The cover didn’t suggest anything that would’ve been a violation of the school rules, but the title suggested something that Riel ignored at first.

“The day I lost my flower... What kind of title is this?”

He hurriedly opened the manga in anticipation of awesome art and story, but what appeared in front of him was

“Woah, tits!”

He closed the book the instant he saw what he saw. He looked left and right desperately praying that no one saw him. He also went around looking for CCTV cameras that could’ve possibly caught him. Luckily, he didn’t see anything. However, he could not rule out the idea of a hidden camera meant to disable the student’s ability to look for blind spots.

“What the hell is this book doing here? A book showing a pair of tits definitely isn’t something that will be allowed. I wonder who sneaked this here…”

He decided to bring it back to its proper place in the shelf, but the curiosity and the itch on his palm that he had felt took hold of his morality and sanity.

“Just a bit more…”

A few moments later, a group of students could be heard talking. It was weak at first, but the sounds got stronger which suggested that they were getting closer to the room. Riel wasn’t noticing due to his immersion to what he had been reading which was quite unfortunate.

“Ah! The face of an unfamiliar young man!”

Said one of the female students with a shoulder-length, curly hair. Riel got so confused upon hearing the words of the student that he closed the book in a hurry accompanied by these words,

“I’m not reading anything indecent!!”

He then quickly placed the book back to its rightful place.

“Nobody even said anything yet.”

This time, a male student who was quite short for his age spoke. He had short hair conforming to the rules of the school.

“Ah! That’s the doujin that I brought last week! You like tits, too?”

Another male student who had an average height, short spiky hair dyed blonde followed up.

“N-no! It just so happened to be the first book that I got my hands on.”

Riel was lying, but also telling half of the truth. It was definitely the first book that he got his hands on, but he could have picked any of the other books. The doujin just happened to be the first thing that Riel got curious about. Who would have thought that it would end up an indecent book, though?

“It’s almost like a necessity for guys to look at those things. It doesn’t surprise me anymore.”

Another girl with a long, wavy hair showed. There were still two students following from behind, and Riel knew those two.

“Oh! Luna!”

But Runa got offended that Luna was the only one he called.

“I’m here, too.”

“Huh? Aren’t you supposed to be in the music club?”

“Higher-ranking students are allowed to have two clubs. I applied a week ago. Tehee!”

The other four club members began to talk to themselves.

“Is he our new adviser?”

“Seems like it.”

“He looks really young.”

“Looks like our school was desperate enough that anyone would be fine as an adviser for us.”

“Or maybe the school just don’t care enough about us.”

The one who stopped them from gossiping to each other was the adorable Luna whom everyone was surprised about.

“You won’t know if he’s good just by looking at him…! Give him a chance… I’m sure… I’m sure that he’ll be our greatest teacher yet!”

Runa only smiled on the sidelines at seeing her sister’s growth.

“For the shy Luna to be this active…”

“You must know the man.”

Runa then answered for Luna this time.

“He’s an important friend to us.”

Everybody’s eyes glowed upon hearing that, but Riel couldn’t allow himself to experience an epic fail right on the first day. He had to exercise his authority as early as possible, otherwise, his students would get used to him being passive.

“I am Riel Miurick. I’ll be your club adviser from here onwards. Although I’m not a permanent teacher here. I will be teaching you part-time.”

Riel’s palms were sweating from nervousness, but he was fine. He was capable of wearing a facade. Wearing the face of a serious man was not a problem.

“Ohhh!! Cool name right there!”

Said by the one with the dyed hair.

“He actually looks dependable when he’s serious.”

That one was from the wavy-haired student.

The twin sisters nodded while the remaining students kept themselves quiet as if they were gauging their new adviser.

Riel decided to act the part of a teacher and went at the forefront of the room. The teacher’s desk with the blackboard behind.

“Take your seats. I introduced myself. You guys need to repay the favor by doing the same. I don’t need to know your hobbies or your address. Just tell me your names and we’ll be good.”

The first one who introduced herself was the wavy-haired student who seemed like the mature and cool type.

“I am Leila Cruz.”

The next was the short boy who seemed to be following the school rules to heart.

“ My name is Arjay Camuy.”

This time, the curly-haired girl.

“Anna Estratos.”

The fourth one, and the last one that Riel was not familiar with. The rule breaker who looked like a delinquent who dyed his hair.

“Elrick Kintos.”

“Okay. That’s all of you, right? Is there anyone who didn’t come?”

“This is all of us.”

Leila confirmed. But the twins didn’t seem to be content.

“How about us?!”

“Huh? I already know you two. We’d be wasting time if you introduced yourselves.”

But Anna disagreed with their teacher.

“I want to hear them introduce themselves.”

Quickly followed by the delinquent-looking one.

“The Laganda twins are said to have the best names in the school since its founding. They are really popular.”

Riel didn’t want to fight back anymore and decided to just allow the two. Otherwise, He would be wasting even more time.

“Runa Mythria Laganda”

“My name is… Luna Evernight Laganda..”

As a sign of appreciation, Leila decided to say something really nice. At the very least, to Riel’s perspective.

“Your namer must be a genius.”

Riel didn’t make any reaction. He was trying not to stand out. Being found out would most likely just lead to the club asking more questions, but the twins, as usual, would make things tough for Riel. As if in complete sync, the twins spoke together with their arms extending to Riel. Palms opened up, fingers straight as if to present Riel to the club.

“He is our namer.”

Everybody was shocked by that revelation to the point that they all stood from their seats except for Leila.

“Then… THEN…. Sir Riel must be really creative!”

Said by Arjay

“So the school had some basis for hiring him even though he’s so young.”

These words were by Leila. Riel didn’t want to be discriminated just because he was younger than most teachers, and it was a good thing his students were already seeing him in a good light.

“Let’s do it, everyone!”

Anna signaled everyone to do something which Riel wasn’t aware of at the time.

“Welcome to our school. Welcome to our club. Sir Riel!”

Was what everybody said. They all said it with such energy and power that Riel’s ears could have dropped on the floor. That made him happy that he had no choice but to wear a smile.

“Yeah. I hope that we can get along.”

He continued,

“I’m not experienced as a teacher, but I can assure you that I’m an experienced writer. Of course, since this is my first time teaching you, please make it clear if you didn’t understand something. I’d hate it if you guys don’t learn anything because I’m an incompetent teacher.”

“Woah, this is the first time we’ve had such a humble teacher.”

The delinquent Elrick said.

Anna, on the other hand, was struck by Riel’s aura. He was humble, and yet, there was a feeling of professionalism in him.

“Looks like attending club will be even more fun!.”

The Arjay who was beginning to look up to Riel didn’t say anything. Instead, something was tugging at his heartstrings. His blood boiling with excitement curious about how much he’ll improve under his new teacher.

“I would like to apologize for being rude to you earlier, Sir Riel.”

That one was the cool Leila.

“Don’t worry about it. For today, we’ll end the class with the introduction. I have already made a schedule of what we will be doing for the next few weeks. Look forward to it. Ah, but you guys will need to show me some of your works. Preferably something of no more than 7000 words which I can use to gauge your writing abilities.”

Everybody went ahead and brought out their short story compilations and picked their best works according to their own perspectives. Riel spent the remaining hours reading while the rest of the club ended up just having fun interacting with one another. Riel would be asked questions every now and then regarding his history with the twins and he would answer for as long as it was within his ability to do so, and the class ended by 1 o’clock just after their club lunch.
