《TUW》Lumious (Chapter 5)

"YOU IDIOT!"
"I said sorry already dude! I'll go get her now!"
Blondy had forgotten to whisk my mother along when he casted his spell. Admittedly, I too had forgotten, but I just woke up disorientated unlike him who should have been aware of her location! No, I am TOTALLY not pinning the blame on Blondy. He spun off in a panic, flying away in a miniature tornado.
In around five minutes, he returned with my mother in his arms. I didn't forget to give him a final glare in which he responded with a sheepish grin.
The gates of Lumious were as tall as three men standing on each other's shoulders and was made of some kind of glowing green metal. Attached to the gates were walls spreading so wide, I could not see the ends of it. Even the exterior was very grand and majestic, as expected of a magic school! Blondy talked to the man manning the gates. Yes, this is a pun. And no, I don't care if it annoyed you.
"Ganesha, open the gates."
The man opened the entrance without a word. As I went in, I was struck yet again by the architecture. All the buildings were masterfully constructed, tall and made of shiny metals of unique colours. Blondy led me into one of the largest buildings and passed many corridors, to a glass door.
As Blondy, pushed the door open, a man who sat before a reception desk looked at us. Noting my unfamiliar face, he raised an eyebrow and spoke.
"So, you have found another one, Isaac."
The man was very unenthusiastic. I wouldn't blame him. Having to deal with many people dragged in everyday by students sounded like a huge chore.
"Dude, he ain't no regular student! He can wield both heat and lightning, one of the most powerful dual combinations!"
"Oh?"
The man revealed signs of interest.
"Interesting. Boy, come here and put your hand on this orb."
This was very exciting! My amazing magical talent was about to be revealed, impressing many and allowing me to be a top student! I could finally graduate from being a worthless peasant!
The man reached under his desk and pulled out a transparent white orb attached to some sort of circular stand, with a wire attached to a piece of flat rectangular stone that was completely smooth. It was a odd looking contraption.

I followed his instructions and placed my hand on the orb, feeling the orb forcefully drain a small amount of mana from my hands. I could see a grey mist form within the orb, and the stone trembled.
"Grey mana? I've never seen that in my life!"
The man sounded intrigued. A bold capped word, "UNDEFINED" appeared on the stone as the trembling stopped.
"My goodness! A new type of mana discovered! I need to report this to the higher ups!"
"Wait!" said Blondy. "You haven't assessed his talent yet!"
"Fine!"
The man clicked a hidden button on the stone.
"Boy, try to forcefully drain back your mana from the stone!"
The moment of truth!
I was about to say I had no idea how to do that when I realised that I already knew how subconsciously! It was simply the reverse of casting spells, pulling mana from the surrounding into my body. I put in all my strength in an attempt to draw the mana back from the orb but to no avail.
The stone vibrated again and a single letter appeared on it, "D".
"D? What the fuck!"
Blondy and the man were flabbergasted. Their jaws were so wide, I feared they might hit the ground. My fantasy was cruelly shattered. One second, I had a undiscovered new mana type and was expected to have great talent! And before I knew it, life decided to fuck me up again with poor talent! Ahahaha... Truely, things aren't going well lately.
Blondy seemed to realise that it would hit me really hard.
"Don't worry dude, I'm sure you can still accomplish great things with your unique mana type!"
He didn't sound fully sure of that.
It was very awkward; I stood there, unsure of what to reply. The man cleared his throat, breaking the atmosphere and pulled out another strange device, a red button attached to a wooden cube. The moment he pressed it, the door slammed open immediately and two old men stomped in, as if they were waiting outside the whole time.
The two old men looked on highly on guard, looking left and right for unseen threats. Realising nothing was there, their expressions turned to that of anger.
"Edward, what the fuck? You think it's funny hit the emergency button as a prank?"
"Sorry! But I just needed to call you down as fast as possible! This boy has a undefined mana type!"

The receptionist, Edward looked extremely nervous as he pointed to me. His face was practically screaming "please don't hurt me!".
"What?"
One of the old men held my hand and forcefully pulled out a portion of my mana. Not very pleasant.
He wrinkled his eyebrows for a second then turned excited.
"Come here Bahal!"
The other old man, Bahal rushed over and pulled another portion of mana from me, more forcefully than the two predecessors. Dammit! Stop stealing my mana!
Bahal looked very excited.
"Oh my goddess!"
Goddess what? He worshiped some fictional divine woman? That sounded vaguely laughable to me.
Bahal dragged me outside of the office and the environment changed all of a suddenly, disorientating me. The other guy flashed in right after, making me realise I had been teleported here. The room felt suffocating, without a window or a door, as if I were in a jail cell. I felt very uncomfortable and nervous, was I going to be captured as a speciment to study?
The two men talked about gibberish that I wasn't interested in and occasionally extracted a little of my mana which they then proceeded to manipulate for about an hour. It was torture constantly getting my mana drained out of me.
They then spent around thirty minutes to explain to me how strange and bizarre my mana was, most of which I did not understand nor was interested in. What I got the gist of was that my mana was a unique type of mana that could convert into any form of elemental mana, allowing me to cast just about every spell in the world. But at a cost. I had to spend double the mana for any elemental spell! Yes, thank you emphasising more about how crap my talent is, life.
Bahal handed me a transparent colourless crystal as compensation, then promptly transferred me in front of a door in a corridor. The disorientation was very unpleasant. I noted a number plate above the door, "237483".
"Boy, this is your room. Try your best to contribute will you? I look forward to your accomplishments!"
He laughed, passing me a key and teleported away. Clearly someone did not know I had a grade D talent.
My first instinct was to look for Blondy and my mother but I did not want to lose my way in this gigantic place. And so I entered my new home. It was luxurious like I've never seen before. It had a room with two beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a empty room radiating large amounts of mana. I was delighted.
Even better, a knock came on my door right when I was done exploring. It was Blondy and my mother who had recovered. I was relieved I did not have to spend the night alone here, unsure of where my mother was.
"My son!"
She gave me a warm hug. I had a brief conversation with Blondy and my mother right after. Blondy told me about the facilities available and I wanted to head to the library but was worried my mother might like some company. She assured me it was fine, and seemed proud that her son had become a mage!
I headed out of the housing and Blondy grabbed me, shooting through the corridors swiftly. I was feeling uncomfortable hugged by a man but at least it was better than flying without support. Blondy noted my distress.
"No homo dude!"
I had no idea what he meant at all.
He flew out a window and we landed gently in front of a huge building. Entering the library I was yet again amazed. It was like an endless sea of books!
Many shelfs doted the entirety of the first floor, at least a few hundred shelves! Moreover, I could tell from the height of the building that there were more floors! It was like heaven to a bookworm like me.
I picked a basic spellbook to read, and learnt what the talent grades meant. At the very least, I was just going to advance ranks a little slower. However, having only half the magical output of the average people was terrible!
Picking around ten books, I borrowed them and bought them back to my residence. I laid in bed, thinking about today's events. How had so much changed in so little time? It was almost unbelievable how I had gone from a peasant to a student in most of the most prestigious schools in a single day.
As I laid in bed, I fell into a restful sleep, partially aided by the mana exhaustion caused by annoying old men.

In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter.
