《The Costa Brava Scenario ( formerly: Space Opera )》44. THE SHOT

GUNSHOT
Southaven looked up. The ladder looked sound. “I’m going up.”
“Uh, wait. I’ll go.” Mike quickly said.
“No,” Southaven answered, “I need you here. Give me covering fire. Then I’ll cover for you.” Mike nodded.
“What about me?”
Both men looked at Heather.
“Some more cover fire?” Mike proposed. Heather’s face was hopeful, it soon turned jubilant.
Southaven spoke, “you could launch a few grenades to keep their heads down. Shoot...at...them.” He pointed back 20 meters up on the catwalk where they thought the rebels were hiding. “It’s the only decent cover up there. Just shoot there.” Don’t shoot me, he thought but didn’t say, don’t blow up the ladder or blow a hole in the catwalk that I have to cross. In fact I’d rather you didn’t do anything, but you won’t listen anyway and Mike is enabling you and, hell!
“Ok,” she said.
He took a deep breath and another. “One, two, THREE!”
Mike popped up and began shooting at the crates on the catwalk. Three round bursts, just like the game’s AI tutorial taught him when he was a kid. A constant stream of three round bursts.
Southaven ran for the ladder. He let go of his own rifle and the patrol sling held it by his side. Hands on the rungs at head height, he started to climb. Nobody was shooting at him.
Mike was running out of ammo in his clip. He reached back with a leg and nudged Heather. She took her cue and popped up. Mike fired a few more bursts while she aimed the grenade launcher. The weapon’s sight and the targeting on her visor’s HUD painted a crosshair on the crate. She leaned into the weapon and pulled the trigger. CHUNK. The stock of the launched kicked back into her shoulder. The grenade spat out.

It missed the crates, her aiming point, but hit the wall and exploded only two meters in front of the crates. “Yes!” she shouted. She blew a big hole in the wall that she hit.
“That will, uh, keep their heads down,” Mike said.
Mike popped up and started shooting again. Heather didn’t bother ducking down. She just started reloading. Without looking, she just grabbed a grenade round and shoved it into the weapon.
Southaven was scampering up the ladder like his life depended on it. His life probably depended on it. At the very top, he half jumped, half threw himself onto the catwalk. He could see shots hitting the crates, but there was darkness behind. Light that was streaming in through the hole in the wall messed with his vision. His hands automatically grabbed his rifle and were bringing it to bear. “Helmet, infrared,” he commanded.
A grenade hit with a firey explosion. A very firey mess. A splatter of fire and burning fuel landed a meter in front of him. Incendiary? Who the hell would shoot an incendiary this close… The answer was clear. Heather. Probably thought she was helping. The tolerant thought was instantly replaced by angry thoughts. The firey mess ruined his infrared view. Everything was white hot. Almost everything. A dot wasn’t.
What the hell? He flipped modes. Through the firey screen he saw it. The menacing muzzle of a gun barrel. Everything was in slow motion. Southaven tried, but couldn’t get his weapon on target. He tried to pull the trigger. Vague suppressing fire was better than nothing. Everything was too slow.
The shot rang out. Southaven could swear that he saw the bullet exit the gun. Impossible, he thought. Then there was a searing pain and the world went black.

Given a new life in a new body, the former human wants to make good use of it and fulfill the dreams of the one he's replacing. He's an Engineer in a world where that's a character class with explicit levels and stats. This world is just discovering the power of steam and clockwork and the occasional magic dungeon crystal, so Vonn is just in time to become a famous genius. He just needs to figure out what the gods actually want from him. (LitRPG Isekai with light but important stats, nonhuman MC. Cover art by Alexandra, https://www.deviantart.com/oktoberbeef .) This book is now available on Amazon! https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B09H5CQSX5 For legal reasons, I need to hide most of the content from Royal Road for now. The version for sale is revised and expanded anyway, including a rewritten opening. If the book does well, that's encouragement to write more of it soon! Reviews are welcome too. As noted in the afterward, it's been fun and useful to share this work with all of you here as I worked on it. Update 2022/2/22: Wow, it did do well! Thanks to all who read, commented, bought, and/or spread the word. Right now I'm working on a side-story about character Selen, and posting that starting yesterday. I do plan to do a true sequel this year, yet.

The Way of Wrought Earth, or: My Tale of Rebirth as a Mostly Inanimate Rock
Mirage Winter. Second Clause, current act. A Relic Hunter's life is harsh — and often short — in the shattered lands of the Frontier. But when Whitelight reemerges, a legendary blade capable of separating anything the user wills it to cut, a newly formed unit organized of Hunter’s both young and old (and sediment based, in a particular case) vow to stop it from falling into cruel hands. Standing against them is the Frontier itself: the unbridled wrath of global federations, fellow Hunters, and those who lurk in the shadows of giants. As the world races to unravel a history desperately concealed, a semi-sapient rock soon realizes that some things are better off dead and buried — especially when those secrets carry an insidious corruption with no cure. Iteration: Mirror-glass Stars in Iron Oceans. First Clause. A soul wakes up as a rock, clinging to fragmented memories and knowledge of another era. What fate awaits such a creature? No, this isn't satire. Yes, I am dumb enough to try to take this seriously. Updates Wednesday, Friday with a variable amount of chapters. This story is not recommended for the easily disturbed. This is your only warning.

Convergence Series
Eulisses Malinor is a prodigious and somewhat reclusive wizard with an unconventional outlook on life itself. The latter may or may not be related to him shedding the burdens of mortality some time ago. He claims that every wizard that takes pride in themself needs to reside in a tower in the middle of nowhere. It definitely has nothing to do with the Addia fanatics that continue to seek him out. Successfuly, much to his discontent. Ever out to ‘cleanse’ him, or bloody murder him if you'd ask the lich himself. But soon, that will no longer be a problem, as Eulisses has finally gathered every reagent - magical or otherwise he needs. He will tear open and stabilize a miniature Rift, essentially creating his very-own pocket realm in which even Addia’s gaze will no longer be able to reach him. Everything has been carefully planned out in advance, so there is no possibility of failure. You can maybe then imagine his bafflement, when instead of the nothingness of his successfully created pocket realm, Eulisses finds himself in a quite holy looking hall, amidst quite too-baffled looking fellows, in the centre of a gigantic summoning circle - allegedly, he cannot read the runes that make it up - and facing a young and quite fair maiden that stares at him quite wide-eyed.
