We had a bit of contention the next morning. Halamin and Marigold both wanted to stop now, go back to refresh training, and then come finish the place. Torendrock wasn’t quite ready to leave, he wanted to go for ‘j-j-just a bit more’. It wasn't really hard to understand, once I thought about it. Halamin and Marigold must have had enough experience points to go up a level, but Torendrock didn’t. Neither did I, as it happened, but I knew Barbarians needed more E.P. to level up than almost all others, so it would be hard to stay at the same level as the others.
We split the party. Just as a future reference, if you're ever tempted to think that splitting the party is the right choice, it's not. Ever. Anyhow, I suggested Torendrock and I go look for the gelatinous cube’s lair, which should be full of everything cleaned out of the lower level, while the other two packed us up, then we could head out together. I knew I’d probably fall short of the experience I’d need, but I might get close enough to hit a few random encounters on the way back. Either way, it didn’t matter to me. By not making a big deal about going back to let them train, they were likely to do the same when I needed to go back and train.
I said to Torendrock, and he agreed, if we ran into anything flying again, we would run like hell.
We headed back down, retracing our path. We didn’t find the lair right away, instead, the first thing we found was the cave with the glowing mica stone. I knew this one. You had to break off a piece and put it in your mouth within 30 seconds. The results were mostly not bad but got worse, so don’t do it twice. So I did it once and ended up getting 25 percentage points added to my Strength. I convinced Torendrock to do it once. It did something, but it took us a bit to realize that his battleaxe had turned magical. Not bad results, overall. There were a few empty caves, one that was flooded, then one that was blocked off by webs.
Spiders weren’t my favorite, and it was likely a poisonous giant spider of some sort, but we lit a torch and burned down the webs. As it turned out, the spider was already dead, but in burning down the webs, we found some old victims, one of which had a purse of gemstones. So, it worked out for us.
We had almost looped back to the stairs going back up when we found a cave covered in a purple glowing mold. It was a magical effect, literally. I ended up staring at it until Torendrock dragged me away, averting his eyes. He admitted it had affected him as well, but natural dwarf contrariness let him break the hold long enough to get us out. I'm not sure I could have done it without him. It was really pretty and I'd like to go back and get a bit to bring with me.
We headed back to a turn-off we skipped earlier. I was peering down a hallway when there was a sudden loud thud behind me. I spun around, and there was a pit trap in the floor behind me. Somehow, despite not seeing it, I had stepped around it, but Torendrock had fallen in. There doesn't seem to be a Luck attribute, so I don't know what happened there. While I hauled him out, I heard the sound of stone grinding in a passage somewhat nearby. Not sure if it was related. Curious thing, the pit trap wasn’t the kind that can automatically reset, so why hadn’t it been tripped yet?

The very next room was our goal. There was an enormous pile of coins, plus a jumble of other items. Including, and I’m very delighted by this, two pewter mugs [29/29, +305 E.P., +5 honor].
I knew Torendrock probably needed at least one encounter to go up in level, so I suggested exploring one final passage, to see if it connected, before calling it quits. As we stepped into one of the larger caverns, just north of the shrieker’s cavern, I heard a tiny sound right before a stalactite tried to drop on Torendrock’s head. I knew though, these were piercers. Another one tried to fall on me, but forewarned, I dodged aside. There was a second round of them, but they missed again. After no more fell, we slaughtered the four who had attacked. If you didn’t know, piercers play dead if they miss. I had one really amazing blow of [-43], but it wasn’t a crit. I’m still wondering about this damage thing.
We got ready to walk on when it hit me. Not literally. But I hadn’t seen an E.P. notification yet. That meant we weren’t done. I whispered to Torendrock, “I hear more.” I didn't, I was metagaming.
On guard, we stalked into the room. Soon enough, another pair dropped at us, then a second pair. Another straight-up slaughter. We waited, but no notification. I whispered to Torendrock again, “I still hear some.”
We carefully walked toward the way we knew led out, and sure enough, two more dropped at us. Mine missed, again, but this one actually hit Torendrock. Not too badly, he just grunted at me. The final two, the biggest of them all, fell and something odd happened to the one attacking Torendrock. It fell onto one of the other piercers, hurting it instead. These things fall straight down. How badly did it fumble the attack to manage that? We once again killed them, this time a [+504 E.P.] popped up.
“You know, I'm not sure how much more exploring we should do without the others. Is this good for you?” I was lying, of course. I figured if that was enough he'd say:
“Aye. H-head out.”
So we did. Everything was packed, and we were on our way. I’m taking a moment to write this up before I forget much. Not a terribly exciting day, overall.
P.S. Yes! [Damage: +452 E.P.] just popped up. I actually made it to second level! Also, [Converting 8 honor to 2 Honor], whatever that’s about.

Arrived in Arz today. Heading on to Fangaerie in the morning. Fangaerie is the capital of the Fangaerie city-states, and it has a university to study in. Marigold is fairly insistent that the university is better to learn in. No one wants to argue it.

It took ten days to sell everything for a good price. Worth the effort though. After selling, I got [Treasure: +374 E.P.]. Wasn’t sure if that was a thing.
Spent time in the bars, bragging about what we’d done, and showing off my new scar. Seems like that’s a good thing. [+4 honor]
We start school in the morning.

School is done, I’m now a level 2 Barbarian! Tried to take a class on Tracking, but failed it. At least, I assume so. My skill didn't go up. But something else did. [+3 honor]

Torendrock, Halamin & I are going shopping tomorrow. He’s looking for new armor, Halamin is looking for a magic sling, and I’m looking for some backup 2H swords. I broke one already, and I’ve accidentally dropped or thrown them.. twice, I think. And of course, I’ll look for elven chainmail in my size. I doubt it exists.

Amazing success! Torendrock found an armor upgrade, Halamin found a magic dagger for sale (ugh), and we even found elven chain mail in my size! It was nearly ten times the normal rate because it was elven forged with elven steel. And that was after bargaining him down. It was used armor, which likely means someone died wearing it. Probably has a fascinating story behind how it was created. As amazing as that was, we also found new swords for me. Two very nice, high-quality swords that were originally made for a prince's honor guard and one ordinary one with a silver coating. I was warned the silver wears off fairly quickly with use, so it’s for emergencies only.
If you're wondering why swords made for a prince never got to him, well, I asked. The prince was assassinated. So the swords were considered tragic and unlucky. Lucky for me, though.
I made sure to purchase the basic armor repair supplies needed. Armor that you don’t take care of won’t take care of you.
Marigold has finished studying and has three new spells.
We leave for Arz in the morning.

Arrived in Arz today. Nothing makes you appreciate a car more than having to walk everywhere. Off to Farzey in the morning.

Back in Farzey. I’ve been in this world for two months now, and while I’m right back where I started, I’m a little bit stronger, a little bit wiser, much better equipped, and moderately wealthy.
Unfortunately, in our travels, we missed out on quite an event here in Farzey. Several warbands of kobolds spent more than a week raiding the town, making quite a mess of things. A local ranger, Thokul by name, led the group that hunted them down. I’m sorry I missed it, I would have liked an outdoor adventure.
But tomorrow we head off to finish Quasqueton properly.

We’re back at Quasqueton. A bad rainstorm washed out the path to the entrance, so we’ll attack that in the morning. Hopefully, the storeroom remains safe to use.

Halamin is the worst climber I’ve ever seen. He literally was unable to even start climbing up the washed-out cliff face. I had no problems at all, of course, and even Torendrock managed it as well, albeit out of armor. Marigold just flew up. I eventually had to lay ropes for Halamin to use before he could even climb it at all. If that hadn’t worked, I would have gone back down, stuffed him in my backpack, and carried him up. But I didn’t really want to humiliate him without at least giving him a chance to climb up. It was odd, but… well, I have a skill in climbing cliffs, and he should have a skill in climbing walls, so maybe his skill didn’t apply, and that left him unable. I don’t know. Maybe I’m trying too hard to attribute real events to game simulations of events or vice-versa. Or maybe he catastrophically failed the skill check for the first ten feet of the climb and would not have been allowed a reroll until circumstances changed.
In any event, I unlocked the door, and in we went. Down the hall, and-
“WHO DARES ENTER THIS PLACE AND INTRUDE UPON THE SANCTUARY OF ITS INHABITANTS?” came from the right.
“ONLY A GROUP OF FOOLHARDY EXPLORERS DOOMED TO CERTAIN DEATH,” came from the left.
“WOE TO ANY WHO PASS THIS PLACE -- THE WRATH OF ZELLIGAR AND ROGAHN WILL BE UPON THEM!” came from both sides. They then began to laugh.
“Marigold, do you have a scroll of Dispel Magic handy?”
Both mouths cut off the laugh and immediately faded into the wall and vanished. Very odd. Almost intelligent you might say. “Nevermind. Let’s get down the stairs and then discuss our plan.” I charged right ahead, leading a group of slightly baffled adventurers. We headed right to the stairs and went down. At the bottom, Torendrock stopped me to ask what was going on.
“W-what was that about?”
I shrugged. “No idea. It seemed like they understood what I said as a threat.”
Torendrock glanced at Marigold, still puzzled. “D-do you know anything about t-this?”
Marigold shook her head. “No, but I agree. I’ve heard if the spell isn’t maintained, they can become sapient.”
Halamin chuckled. “You bluffed them. Nice job.”
But no E.P. Retreat must not mean defeat.
We led them away from the glowing moss cave and to the cavern with the glowing stone. Halamin, unsurprisingly, jumped at the chance of eating a piece to get a good result. Marigold wouldn’t even consider it. I’m not sure what that says about the rest of us, since she’s certainly the smartest one in the party. Halamin wasn’t really sure what, if anything, happened but nothing obviously bad happened.
We pointed out where the pit trap was, which led to a small mystery. It had been reset. It was, as I think I mentioned, not the automatic resetting type, which means there’s an intelligent creature still down here with us. Or to be more accurate, one was down here sometime in the last month. We’ve been gone quite a long time now. Heading through to the previous treasure room of the gelatinous cube, we were suddenly attacked from the ceiling by a lime green slime of some sort.
It stretched down at me, but I noticed it with plenty of time and stepped aside. Somehow, it overcommitted to the attack and it was obvious it was having a hard time pulling itself back together to attack again.
A sling bullet, a magic missile, and an axe all hit before it could attack again. I was slow drawing my swords, so it got a chance to attack again. It lunged as I swung and it missed as I hit it [-18], finishing it off [+74 E.P.].
We went back through the room of piercers. Forewarned, but no more fell on us, so I guess we got them all last time. Around a corner was a small passage that we thought might connect to one we’d skipped earlier. Headed down that way, some kind of bizarre reptilian creature tried to attack me from above. It had a very long body that was seemingly anchored to the ceiling. Halamin, always quick with a sling, hit it once and so did I [-17]. Torendrock hit, and you could tell it was reeling from the blows. It pulled itself back up, but too late, Marigold nailed it with a Meteor Storm. No, just kidding, it was a Magic Missile [+40 E.P.].
So after that, I strode off down that passage, and wouldn’t you know it, a second one tried to attack me. Halamin bounced his sling bullet off my head for some reason and so I drew first blood [-21]. This one screeched in agony as I hit it and fell to the ground writhing in agony. I was kind enough to finish it off [-16] and I must say, I’m getting tired of being attacked from above [+40 E.P.].
That left us one more place to look. There was an actual door in the wall here, it was locked but Halamin fixed that quick enough. The room was empty but had one curiosity. It had some kind of blue mineral striations on one wall.
Coming out of the room, we were attacked by giant cockroaches. Don’t misunderstand, they were only Halamin’s size, but that’s giant for a cockroach. Marigold, who often would hold off on spell casting until we’d exchanged first blows, hit first with a skewering missile, damaging both of them. I should mention, she holds back sometimes because of how often we can kill things with just a few blows. Why waste spells if it’s going to die in seconds? Anyway, these buggers are known to be tough, so she didn’t hold back. I hit the first one [-13] after Halamin and Marigold had both damaged it, and had to hit it again [-20] before it finally went down. The second one attacked Torendrock, but while it couldn’t bite through his armor, it could dodge his swings and did so twice. As I said, tough little guys. I took a step towards the second one, and really swung with everything I had [Crit! Severity 10, Upper back, -42, +1 honor], and that finally finished it. [+63 E.P.]
The northernmost room was the largest cavern we’d seen yet, and one that must have a connection to the outside. The reason was simple, the floor was covered in guano. I mean, covered. The ceiling was full of bats. I mean, full. There wasn’t really anything of interest in the room, so we gave it a cursory look and then had Halamin walk the perimeter. The only aspect that might have been of interest was the part of the wall that was bricked over, so he took some extra time to check it for a secret door. And found one.
The problem was, you had to disassemble part of the wall to get to it, and he was concerned about the noise that would make. I offered to go out by myself and do the work. I wasn’t much concerned with bats; I know they can carry diseases but it’s not that could lead to a worldwide pandemic or anything crazy like that.
So, short story long, I opened it up, no one got bitten by any bats, and then we all went in.
It was a tighter passage than most have been, the far end being another brick wall. Naturally, all four of us assumed there was a secret hidden in here beyond just a passage from one cavern to another, so we searched every inch of that corridor. It took half an hour of all four of us searching, but Torendrock finally noticed some suspicious dirt trails leading to a wall. That wall was another secret door, fairly well hidden. Opening it led to what could only be a treasure room. One that I suspected had been at least partially raided. There was gold scattered on the floor, and of the thirteen coffers and chests inside, a few were left open, one even tumbled onto its side. Halamin started checking them for traps while Torendrock picked up the scattered gold. I stayed watchful and was deeply glad I did. Because it wasn’t even seconds after they started working that something started rising out of a pile of dirt in the corner. It was trivial taking it out this way, hitting it twice [-14] as soon as I noticed it moving [-18], then once more when that didn’t quite finish it [-21]. Marigold identified it as a muck golem [+683 E.P.], a very nasty opponent if you don’t catch a break and see it waking up or the like.
While I was busy dealing with the golem, Halamin took care of the chests. I heard him mutter, “Poison needle, mmm, that’s a nasty one.” He popped the chest a second later. “Ha, that’s a lot of platinum!” And it was a lot, nearly a thousand in platinum pieces. He fiddled with a coffer next, smirking to himself. “Way too easy! Ooh, hard silver this time. And a fur cape? Strange.” He was very puzzled by the next chest, checking it three times. “I don’t see any traps.” He proceeded to unlock it and it was empty. Of course.
There was one he couldn’t seem to unlock, but the last one he could open had gold pieces and some silver armbands. Torendrock decided to use his own open lock skill on the chest Halamin couldn’t open. A couple of hard hits with his axe opened it right up, but the darn thing was empty.
We headed down to the second brick wall, but as we got close, we could smell this awful stench, even through the wall. I had no idea what it was, but none of the others were sure either. It was fairly quiet, but we could hear a few voices speaking.
I kicked down the brick wall. That sounds much more impressive than it really was since the bricks were dry-stacked. We burst in, startling some child-sized troglodytes being watched by two adult trogs.
Torendrock must have been really ready to go because for once he was the first to charge the monsters. That’s not in any way meant as a slur, he’s just not as naturally quick on his feet as I am. I think he used up all his energy doing it though since his first attack missed. I came up right behind him, but that awful stench! It turned my muscles to water from smelling so bad. I managed a weak blow [-14] on one, then a better hit [-21] on the second. Actually, something new happened with that second blow. After knocking down the second Trog, I kept the blade swinging and hit the first Trog again, finishing both with a single swing. Have I learned some kind of cleave attack unknowingly? It’s not on my character sheet.
[Ed: Nope. Hackmaster has follow-through damage, which allows you to apply damage that would take an opponent into the negative to another opponent.]
We didn’t have time to deal with the child-Trogs, because even as I was turning to look for more, javelins were in the air coming at us. Rushed shots, I assume, because they never even came close to us. Three more Trogs were coming at us, and they looked much larger than the first two. One of them hesitated just long enough to bash a large gong that echoed loudly. I charged the largest one first and got a weak blow in [-14], and I entirely blame the awful smell. Marigold and Halamin were not idle, I should mention, as spells and sling bullets were flying as fast as they could manage them. I got one more blow in on the large one [-13], but with such weak blows, I was not feeling great about him going down anytime soon.
Much to my surprise, one more hit [-15] did him in. I turned to the other two, who were moving to flank Torendrock and attack him without his shield in the way, and with my nostrils clearing a little, swung a blow [-34] that repeated my earlier feat, hitting both of them with one swing. The first went down, but the second was still standing, if not for much longer as Torendrock finished him a moment later.
Of course, this fight still wasn’t over yet. Another trio of javelins came flying in, followed by another trio of Trogs. One dropped in writhing agony when Marigold hit him with her missiles, but Torendrock and I engaged the other two. We each struck home [-15], and then they both dropped to the ground in agony as well!
Never did get a good understanding of why, but we slit throats and at least for the moment, the battle was done [+206 E.P.].
Now, I was no fool, so immediately counted bodies and piles of bedding. There was one for the three hatchlings and fifteen others. We only had eight bodies. We made a cursory search of the bedding for treasure but didn’t find anything. None of us found that believable, at least in the sense of them not having any, because who else could have raided the treasure room?
While waiting to see if any of the others had heard the gong, we explored a bit. There were two ways out of the room, not including the secret passage. One led to a room with a stone statue, and connected back to the rest of the complex through the room with the pit trap, solving an important mystery. That is, who had reset that pit trap. The second way out was far more interesting, leading to a ledge on a cliff outside the complex. The exit was clearly meant to have been a secret door but had been forced open from the outside, rendering it now obvious. It was still bright outside, barely past midday.
Coming back inside, I found out Halamin had dealt with the hatchlings. I had, and still have, mixed feelings about that. Yes, Trogs are unrepentantly evil creatures. But they were children.
He’d also done a more thorough search and found the treasure, hidden in a crevice with a rock shoved on top, and gotten Torendrock to move it. It was impressive. Coins, gems, plus a body shield and battleaxe of the exact types Torendrock used. No other arms or armor.
I was deeply suspicious. “Toren, you’re the one who uncovered this, right?”
He nodded, not seeing where I was going with that.
“And the treasure just happens to contain exactly the type of shield you prefer and exactly the type of weapon you use.”
He nodded again, but this time I could see the suspicion growing.
“Are y-you thinking illusion or c-c-curse?”
I grimaced. A curse was actually worse than I’d been thinking. “Now that you say it, curse.”
We loaded everything up, determined to get things identified the first chance we had. Halamin got a funny look on his face as soon as we packed up. I figured it out over dinner, but I’ll put it here. He started talking about going back to school, saying something about wanting to check back in with his instructor. I think he went up another level, the lucky guy.
Not long after we packed up, a small group of Trogs (three, to be precise) came in through the back entrance.
They threw javelins at us, well, really they threw at the largest target, me, then closed the distance. I got two good hits in, [-16] and [-13], one Trog going down. Halamin hung back, there were only three after all. Marigold did too, but I knew she was very low on spells. Torendrock stepped up but missed. I got two amazing hits in, [-29] followed by [-26], each of which took down a Trog. Very short fight. [+100 E.P.]
We headed back through the cave system, on the way out at last, but there was one final curve thrown our way.
We came upon a final group of Trogs, four more this time. This bunch just came at us with claws and teeth. I hit one [-14] but missed the second. Torendrock nearly dropped his axe. Trogs are really fast, attacking with both claws and teeth as fast as my two swords, but my armor held them off easily at first. I hit another [Crit! Severity 7, Shin, -19, +1 honor], taking him down but missed the second again. Claws and teeth came to nothing again, and Torendrock got a solid hit on one of them.
I heard Marigold start to speak then, asking, “Should I-” right as I got a good blow in [-20], putting another down. “-Nevermind.” Claws and teeth from the remaining two were still useless while Torendrock had to jostle for position, not quite managing to get a swing in. Had a surprise then, one actually found a gap in my armor, and snuck a claw in [-1 dam]. Torendrock hit that one from one side, and I hit it from the other [-16], and down it went. For the third time in a row, my second swing missed. Luckily, before the last one could do anything more, I hit it [-20] and that was it. [+163 E.P.]
We bunked down in the storeroom for the last time. I already had to make use of the armor repair kit to fix that gap, so I’m very glad to have that. Spent a little time sharpening my swords as well, to keep them in perfect condition. We’ll head out in the morning.
P.S. 3rd level might not be as far off as I thought. I got [MVP: +1050 E.P.] and [Damage: +441 E.P.] notifications just now. And I just got to 2nd. Also, [Converting 8 honor to 2 Honor]. Still trying to figure that one out.
