《Stepping Through》We Play the Game – 26 – We are Rivals, of a Sort

A few minutes later, the carriage slowed down, seemed to turn a corner and then stopped. The doors were opened from the outside and Tina found she was now inside the courtyard of what looked like a luxurious mini-mansion, not unlike the palace she and Devon had stayed at if a little smaller an only a single story. It was quite as ostentatious as the palace Devon and she’d been staying at, but still, quite nice and the breeze here carried the scent of flowers and sea salt a well. Tina wondered if it might even be in the same part of Constantinople.
“This way,” Cassia motioned her to climb down from the carriage and follow. Tina sighed and followed. At least she was safe here, and there was a good chance she’d be able to get word back to Devon somehow. She did, after all, have to get back to her place and time. Wanted to. Needed to. But Constantinople seemed a very complicated place and she was beginning to wonder what she’d come across around the next marble-clad corner.
She was lead into the building, down ornately decorated corridors, through a few finely decked out rooms and hallways and finally ended up in a patio where a middle-aged woman, maybe in her fifties reclined as she looked out over the city and the sea beyond. Huh. They were up on a hill.
The surrounding garden filled the crisp sea air with a light perfume and the quite was only broken by the sounds of birds and the distant hubbub of the city below.
The woman turned to her and locked a pair of scrutinizing green eyes on her. She was blonde, platinum blonde maybe, or perhaps her blonde hair was just greying out with fine lines around her eyes and mouth.

“Come and sit,” the woman offered. “Cassia, could you get us a decanter of Sangria.”
“Sangria?” Tina asked as she approached the proffered lounge chair. She hadn’t expected something that familiarly 21st century to be on anyone’s menu.
“You like it, don’t you?” the woman asked. “Please, take off your coat and stay a while.”
Tina shrugged off the coat, sighed and even shivered a bit as she felt the breeze through her sweaty clothing and then finally sat down.
“I suppose so,” she replied.
“Well, you don’t want to drink the water here, now do you, Tina?” the woman smiled.
There seemed to be quite a bit of familiarity in the woman’s expression, and her voice did sound like one she had heard before.
“Do we know each other?” she asked.
“Not much,” the woman said. “And mostly by reputation at that.”
Cassia arrived with a pitcher of Sangria with a pair of silver goblets on a tray. She set about pouring the reddish-purple fruity concoction into two of them.
“Who exactly are you?” Tina wanted to know.
“My name is Greta,” the woman said. “But, more precisely, I am the one who helped get you extracted from that riotous mob and the clutches of a particularly grasping and dishonest dwarf. There is much about your employer you do not know Tina.”
“Yes, I’ve been finding that out lately,” she replied.
How much, though, did this woman know about Devon and her? Was she like Devon in some way? Did she know they’d time/space travelled? Was Greta another time traveler? That idea perked her right up.
“You know Devon?” Tina asked. She took a sip from the proffered goblet. The Sangria was chilled, sweet… and strong. Actually, it was amazing. She swallowed it all down and held the goblet out for a refill.

“We’ve met,” Greta told her. “You could say we are rivals of a sort. And I have been looking forward to meeting you in person, in particular. As you are kind of special.”
“So we have…” Tina started, and then realized why the woman seemed familiar.
Her voice. Oh yes, this woman was definitely another time traveler. That intonation was unmistakable.
“You called the office,” she said. “In Toronto. You stepped through to here as well.”
Greta nodded.
“Smart too,” the woman said smiling. “And you pay attention to detail. That’s good.”
“Are you after Lola, the hammer, as well?” Tina wondered. “For yourself?”

8 126Flame Beneath The Snowfall
Alto is a world governed by Tones. Magic, as one might call it. Manifested through deep mental and physical conditioning, one can control the Tones in a way that is unique to them. The power to store items in gems, transfer life, affect a person's mind, and even the more primal abilities such as control of the elements. Those who have these supernatural abilities are called 'Vassals.' People that fully manifest their abilities are not as common as one might think, and not all Vassals acquire their ability through practice, given if conditions are met. In fact, those who had received much trauma manifest the Tones more frequently, albeit spontaneously. However, the rare kind of Vassals are those who manifest it from childhood. A gift, but not without its repercussions. Alto is stuck in a transitional era, where the line between modern and dated technology is blurred. One can travel to a city that has a tall skyline, bustling with people in sophisticated clothing, or a mere town governed by a lord, all the while riding on a powered vehicle. Cultures vary: Some turn to the more dated practices such as castes, others are more inclined to set equal footing on their people, led by nobility. Some are dedicated to become scholars, studying Alto's Tones, while others set foot on hunts, protecting lone towns from the creatures of some of the still-untamed lands. And the Vassals? Those willing are took under The Organization, an elusive group, its presence said to permeate all throughout Alto, taking care of Rogue Vassals that abuse their abilities and other businesses related to their side. But what is this story all about, you may ask? Well, set your sights on the upper portions of this huge landmass that is Alto. Yes, the 'whole' world is called Alto, but that is because the majority of the known people live on this large continent. Relieve yourself of the worrying tensions everywhere, and see the white snow. Trace the piercing mountaintops and focus your eyes between the valley. A town sits there. Mido. After realizing that the memories only left in his mind was the night of his town's imminent destruction in flames, a boy finds himself grasping for every fiber of his life as he lays down flat on the ground. Beneath him was soot mixed with the white snow. Fortunately, a group of investigators, who were supposed to answer their call for help, saved him from his sorry state. With a newfound second wind, but hampered by his loss of memory, he must solve his own case: Who had the audacity to set Mido, his town, aflame? Flame Beneath the Snowfall focuses on action, with a sense of adventure, but mostly the discovery of an outside world, and the protagonist's exposure to it. Add in a whisk of soft magical elements, and you get a story that I hope will be interesting to the readers. That is not to say that my work is without the sense of unnerving atmosphere, however. As a forewarning, there are elements of gore, horror, minor elements of mental trauma, etc. so it is not for all audiences. *The book is already completed. Although I have plans to continue the story (it would have to involve much larger scope in terms of world-building), I have yet to decide when to start the next entry.
8 117Dip$h!+s in Space
An eccentric comedy novel (that thinks it's a TV show) about space, and the Dipsh!+s that end up stranded in it. This hyper-self-aware comedy of stupid proportions, centers around Captain William T Lawg (no relation) and his adventures as a guy who managed to afford a refitted soft-top ice-cream truck, in space. Explore the universe with his trusty crew of valiant randos. Marley, the tech-bro, stoner spacebunny, who just wants to get away from his home world and the bullies it harbors. Duffy, the plump and sassy female mechanic, who has had every job in existence totaling far more years than possible. Roy, the frigging fabulous, flamboyant android, and former spy…or possibly current spy. (dun dun, daaaa!) And lastly, but certainly leastly, that other chick the captain keeps trying to bang. Ride with the crew of the notorious Tast-E-Chill, to a world of wonder that a lot of other space travelers have already been before, but probably not Lawg, so it's still exciting. This satirical joke on itself and every sci-fi trope ever to exist, will be sure to either thrill you or disappoint you, because COMEDY…IS…SUBJECTIVE! With a crew of 3-10 and an IQ of also probably 3-10, The captain putters along to uncharted lands, where history, loot, drama, innuendos of the sexual verity, and various Technicolor hoes shall surely be waiting, usually with some form of trap. Each season brings new and interesting crewmen, like: Menace: the adorable genderless frog-child-thing with the heart of gold and the dialogue vocabulary of a slightly trained parrot. Greg: the 8 foot tall, ancient, thermonuclear, semi-retired alien overlord who just wants to prove he still has a purpose…and also to rule the galaxy. Izzy: a 3rd generation, age-reversed reboot, accidental clone of her own mother/sister/older self, who happens to be Greg's daughter-in-law…and much, much more. Prepare yourself for shallow adventure, moderately-to high offensive dialogue, and overwhelmingly childish scenarios. Tag along as the crew battles, fierce enemies, lack of food and survival tape, and occasionally their own incompetence. Teen Romance, current politics, subtlety, dignity, this sucker has none of those, and it darn well knows it. Raise the sails and grab the rails as a bunch of dipsh!+s find themselves...IN SPACE. (Roll dramatic tapering credits, to royalty free trumpet music)
