《The Apex Guardian》Chapter 6

"Sir, you can't! This is the most valuable asset we own."
"I own. And jeez man why do you say it like that. You guys have her kill people?....Do they?"
Noctus shakes her head, Asher rolls his eyes, "Secondly, she isn't an asset, she's a human being."
"There's not even proof that he's the son though! Why are you all acting like he is?"
Noctus reaches into her coat and pulls out a small oval box with a clear, plastic top and sets it on the table.
"We did it in the car on the way here...before we were attacked. A hair of Mr. Palmer and a sample of mine. It's a match, I'm Asher Palmer."
Noctus opens the box and a screen appears, big red letters, MATCH above a pucture of James Palmer and Another of Asher.
The room stares at the small screen. Noctus takes it and signs to them.
"She says, 'And in case you are getting ideas, I have another one of these that has been mailed to an associate.'"
"You don't even belong to him right now." One says,
"Technically, she doesn't belong to anyone right now. And that's the way I'm going to keep it."
Noctus touches a button under the table, a rectangular plate slides on the table and reveals a keyboard. Noctus touches the keys with incredible speed.
Then she signs to him, telling him to put his hand on the table beside the keyboard. He does as asked, a few of the people in the room voice rejections but don't dare to step towards him because of Noctus.
Suddenly a female voice comes over the speakers in the room. "Asher Palmer, identity confirmed. Welcome to your company sir. Transfering rights and assets to you. This will take a few seconds."

'This is Karen, an AI over the system of the company.'
"Karen?"
Noctus nods, 'She belongs to the company's owner, which is you.'
"But not me personally."
'No.'
'I'd like to sit down with you...that is, if you still want to e a part of this.'
"Something we should be a part of?"
Asher looks at one of the men, his green eyes have a misleading sense of trust. Asher snorts.
"No. Sorry. Karen how's it coming?"
"Transfer 87% complete....transfer complete, this is now your company sir."
"So now what?"
"Now you go back to work, I need to have a private meeting with Noctus."
"About what exactly."
"Well if I tell you it's not private is it?"
Noctus takes him to the CEO's office and secures the office.
'Noctus, I have no idea how to run a company.'
She slowly nods and signs, "That's why I'm here is it not?'
'I want to be the owner of the company. But I don't know a thing about running a buisness let alone one like this.'
'What do you suggest?'
'What if you ran it?'
She hums, 'I'm...not surprised. But...you only just met me. For all you know this could have been my plan the entire time.'
"I know. And to be honest. I don't think I trust you enough to run the company right now. But either you would run it, or I run it into the ground. Even if you helped me, you'd tecnically be running it anyway."
She sighs, 'Are you certain about this?'
'Yes, although, I'll release you, if you still want to-'
'No. I want to remain your protector so long as you wish the same.'

'Okay, then maybe I can go to school for it? You can teach me to fight, or at least basics? Ince you think I know enough to take control of the company and do what you think is right while I learn to do the same.'
'I've never run a company either. Though I agree I'm more suited.'
'I own the company, but you'll run it and help me to understand it once you think I'm ready.'
'If I may, I'd rather turn over staff, hire people worthy of trust and our goals.'
Asher turns and stares out a window, he sighs and runs a hand through his hair. "Geez...it seems so complicated right now...if you think that's what we should do.'
Noctus nods, 'I understand, would you like to run the checks with me? We can both decide who to hire, who to keep and who we would be better offf without.'
'Yes. I would like that. Let me ask this right off the bat, where do you see us going?'
'We are a robotics and security company. Keep up our clients, but focus less on military and war purpose.'
'Okay. Agreed. When do we start?'
'We can go inform the board room and we can have Karen aid us? Speed up the process?'
'I like it.'
'Okay.'
They walk back, Asher feels so useless. Like a little monkey hangin on her arm with the purpose of her showing him off. He trues to avoid eye contact with everyone, he feels like he isnt yet worthy to look them in the eyes. The walk back seems endless as people subtly watch them.
The boardroom swells with frustration and anger just from the members seeing Noctus and Asher through the glass.
"You're crazy! You can't fire people like us! You need us!"
"Actually I have no idea if I do, but it's not just my call to make right now. I already told you Noctus will be helping me. You could still be staying, I don't know."
"You can't do this." One woman growls,
"Actually I can, this is my company....We won't be supplying enemies and war lords with soldiers. Meaning that I want a new vision for this company." Asher says,
"You'll run the company into the ground!"
Asher stops and frowns, "Huh..."
He turns and smiles softly, "Good thing its mine then right?!"
Noctus smirks and snorts. "Noctus? Can I get the documents concerning your ownership at home?"
'Yes, you can. You can access it from your office at the mansion.'
Asher stops and looks at her, "That's right. I hadn't thought about the house my father had yet...I guess it's mine?"
She nods. Asher takes a deep breath and they walk out of the room and to the elevator. "We're going to have even bigger targets on our backs then we do now."
'Yes. But it won't be as bad as earlier. I'm by your side Asher.'
"Don't take this personally okay?"
She nods, "I'm not sure if its a good thing but, knowing you are makes me anxious."
'I understand Asher. I do. It's all being thrown at you at once."
"Yes. But don't misunderstand. Even if I don't totally trust you yet. I still trust you."
"I will do my best to earn the rest of your trust and keep it."
"Let's get to work."

Kept in absolute secrecy, it seeps into a fading town, quietly shared from person to person. To Rachel DuValle, perpetually underestimated and dismissed by the world, magic represents a chance to become something much greater than herself. In the face of an unsuspecting world, their decisions shape the growth of a budding society discovering untold power. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. Want this story in smaller bites? Click here! The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. Each chapter is pretty long (average ~8000 words), so find somewhere comfy to read. The more she pursued her lost love, the more question she faced and the people who were close to her are not what they appear to be. Even in exile, her constant bedmate would not stop. Now, being hunted, embroiled in an age-old conspiracy, torn apart by various factions, how is a lone drow to survive? Of course, by doing what she did best, raising an army. For the dark-elf Matrons have a nasty habit of not staying down when knocked. They rise up again and come back with fury. ===== Series Info======= The world-building is a combination of DnD, Pathfinder and Elderscrolls. Though I prefer to take a few liberties if possible. The yuri/GL Is an extremely slow burn one and the focus is more on the relationship dynamics than romance. =====Author Notes===== This is my first writing attempt, and in the spirit of full disclosure, I am not a native English speaker and I am hoping to use this chance to improve my writing. Constructive criticisms are always welcome. I have a full-time job but I would try to keep the releases consistent.
