《The Witch of Langle Field》Chapter 13 - Watching My Maid Clean

Today, my mailbox was once again empty.
Devoid of anything aside from air.
Empty mailboxes were rare, but it was even rarer for them to occur in the same week. If I recall correctly, this is the first time in my whole life that this has happened.
And that's not an exaggeration.
However, in the end, I couldn't do anything about it.
I was bored again.
"Not going out today, master?"
"Nope. There are no job requests at the mail today."
"I see. That's unfortunate." Nola said. "What are you going to do today, master?"
"Not sure. Maybe I'll just read the day reading."
"The library hasn't been thoroughly cleaned yet, master."
"It's fine. I got used to it anyway."
The fact that I've grown an immunity to the horrible mess in this house goes to show my determination in cleaning it.
Good thing I have a maid now.
"If that's the case, then I will continue my ongoing cleaning," Nola said.
For about two hours I spent my time in the library. To me, it felt like years.
I've only had magic books in here, and I've read every single one of them from cover to cover.
There was nothing new for me to read, so I quickly got bored.
I need new stuff to read.
But I've already acquired this year's copy of The Magician's Almanac. There was no new magic book.
Hmm.
Maybe I could try looking for fiction books?
I've never read a single fiction book in this world. This is ironic since I practically immersed myself in light novels back on Earth.
I guess the experience of living in a fantasy world provided a good substitute for fantasy stories.
I'll buy some the next time I go out.
Or maybe I could do it now?

......
Nah.
Let's leave it for another day.
As I was about to reach for another hardbound up on the shelf, I heard singing.
It was Nola's voice. Nola was singing.
Curious, I opened the door slightly.
Nola was sweeping the floor. She was humming as she swayed her waist side to side, in the same rhythm she sways her broom.
Unaware that I was watching her back, she continued doing her job like normal. Of course, with the singing and the swaying.
Are all S-Tier maids like this, I wonder?
I could still remember we had maids who did this often. Me and Dralk would normally make fun of them behind their backs.
But now, although I do admit it is pretty funny, I'm not making fun of Nola.
No.
Nu-uh.
Though, if I were to be completely honest, it seemed to me that Nola had a talent for singing and dancing. Her rhythm is in sync with her body.
She could become an idol, I randomly thought.
In the future, maybe.
But not now.
"......"
Hmm.
Well, I had nothing to do at the moment, so I figured I would watch my maid work for a bit.
I slowly closed the door, careful not to make a sound.
Immediately Nola turned her back.
"Ah, master. Do you need anything?"
Oops.
My cover was blown.
How did she know that I was behind her?
I guess she did know about me staying in the library. Any sound that came from it indicated that I had moved.
Maybe that was it.
"Not really, just... Uh..."
It was then that I noticed it.
"Do you need any help? Your dustpan is pretty full."
Pretty full is an understatement. It was a literal mountain of dirt.
Was my floor that dirty?
"Thank you for the offer, but unfortunately I have to decline," Nola said in a kind voice. "I prefer to do it on my own. It would be faster and more beneficial for me."

"Oh, okay."
Faster and beneficial?
Didn't they say that two heads are better than one?
But maybe she meant it differently.
Maybe Nola thought that it would be more time-consuming if she monitored me and my progress, thus further hindering her productibility.
Maybe.
I'm not a hundred percent sure.
Maid logics are weird.
"Can I at least watch you, though?"
I'm so bored I turn to watch chores as a form of entertainment.
What is wrong with me?
"Sure, master."
Nola agreed, and so I did.
To pass the time, I decided to commentate on the cleaning process of my maid.
I took mental notes on how she swept the floor, from the way she poses while doing so. As she swept, the dust on the dustpan slowly grew taller.
After she was done with the second floor she then swept the stairs, before continuing onto the ground floor.
Crouching low enough for the broom to reach the area under all the furniture, she left no spot unswept.
Soon she finished sweeping. Placing her accumulated dirt in the trash and putting back the broom and dustpan in the closet, she then pulled out a mop and a bucket.
After sweeping, it was time to mop.
Repeating the same process, she first mopped the second floor, then the stairs, and finally the first floor, occasionally dripping the mop into the bucket of water.
I was watching all of this from a distance. But, since she was absorbed in her work, it doesn't look like she paid any attention to me that much.
It was only when Nola started to prepare lunch when I looked at the time.
I had been watching her for at least three hours already.
Nola was doing stuff in the kitchen.
Honestly, I only have a vague idea of what she was doing there. My parents were the ones who cooked for me too back on Earth, so I never really understood procedures like how to prepare meat in this dish.
Of course, I didn't cook my food when I was staying in the Royal Palace either. My comrades were the ones who cooked food when we went out on various adventures though.
To me, it looked like Nola was mushing around the meat in a bowl with her bare hands, adding a few sprinkles of what seems to be seasoning.
After chopping it to pieces on the chopping tray, she proceeded to do the same to a potato-like plant.
I've never tried to cook steak before, so I took down notes on my mini notepad. For future references.
Soon, lunch was served.
It was fantastic. The meat was perfectly cooked, and the potatoes were soft. The sauce helped give the dish more flavor.
Once again I thanked the high heavens for giving me such a talented maid.
As I continued to eat, Nola simply stood near the wall, watching me with a smile on her face.
......?
Hmm.
Is it me, or...?
Either something was wrong with her eyes, or it was simply just my imagination striking again.
How do I describe this...
It was like I was looking at a pair of dead eyes.
"......"
Nah.
No way.
Why should she have those feelings in the first place? Nola so far hasn't commented on anything regarding my behavior to her yet, so it was probably nothing.

The Helena Chronicles
Espers are really no different than humans; they look like any normal human and in general behave like any normal human. However, there are a few key differences. The max life expectancy of espers ranges from forty-five to fifty. They naturally have a knack for mathematics and are extremely intelligent in general, this is because their abilities rely on the subconscious and conscious calculations. They also have a mysterious energy source they call Focus that is generated naturally by all espers. The continent of Elestveeve is populated by three major factions, each a governing force. On the west of the continent, there is the Noble Houses that subscribe to the Deity Faith. The Houses ruling with the Deity Faith as council since the religion's founding four-hundred years previous. Controlling most of the northeast is WITCH, an organization ruled by powerful espers; claiming the mysterious Genesis as their capital, they are a whispered myth among much of the continent's less technically advanced residents. In the southeast you have Tech City, a towering monolith of a capital with four sky layers and metropolis' leveled deep underground; it is a city brimming with technical advancement and cyber integration. Each faction contends with one another for their evolutionary ideology, by devout religious worship to receive miraculous gifts, unique genetic lineage to obtain ESP, and technological integration to become something more than human. Helena, a young genius and esper, awakes in a dark room with only fuzzy memories and the company of seven other children. She must determine how she got there and how to get back to where she came from. Warning: Due to time constraints, I don't have the time to keep up on my three stories; therefore, Helena will need to go in a stasis chamber until I can find more time to write between work and life. I love my first girl so much! however, it seems she is the least popular among the fans (the poor girl T_T). This world is much bigger than my other two novels and I'm not giving up on it, but simply having to put her on ice.
