《Apocalypse》Episode 40: My Apocalypse

Under a darkened smoke filled sky, and with the crackle and flickering of a city block on fire, I faced the two fast zombies who had just entered the courtyard, and saw them bumped from behind as still more continued to arrive.
I looked at the growing horde with a weary air of resignation. We had tried to run from every circumstance we had found ourselves in. We had kept moving because I had not felt that there had been any other alternative.
And despite it all here we found ourselves.
Myself, Mina and the young boy kept walking back until we were up against the fence, and then we could retreat no more.
I thought of the life that I had once had, and of my brother who I hoped was in a part of the country still unaffected. I hoped he would find a way where I had not. I hoped he would succeed where I had failed.
I thought of the radio reports and the way that this pandemic had grown so quickly, and relentlessly continued to grow.
I removed the backpack from my shoulders and let it fall to the floor. I pulled the knife from my waist band, and held the screwdriver in my other hand. I did not look at either of my companions. I simply stared straight ahead at the undead who came towards us in a driving mass.
There was no hope left in this world. All that remained was destruction. All that remained was fear. It was clear to me in those last moments that humanity could never beat the odds of fighting death itself. As I stared into the faces of these creatures as they swarmed us I saw the true nature of things, and that all things must end.
As we fell, I struck out instinctively. My blows were futile and ineffectual. We were overwhelmed and outnumbered.
Above the groans there were screams. From the boy, from Mina and from myself. The pain was immediate, intense and continuous. I was engulfed amidst their ruined bodies and at the last all I knew was pain.
This was my apocalypse.
