《The System》Chapter 4: Let There Be Light

Timothy was pleased, very pleased. The idea was brilliant, and the execution difficult, not impossible, however. Sure, not everyone would like it. But it was made so that everyone would adapt, and learn to like it. Everybody would be able to live a grandiose life. Others were not even close to the greatness of this idea, and none of the people at the Slab were smart enough to ask for his attention and pitch their creations.

“Thank you all for participating in this lovely experiment, you will now be dismissed.” The Slab was suddenly quiet, only the two madmen remained. Timothy visualized himself, appearing as a regular human. “I should warn you to never speak of what you have created, it may skewer the balance of your beautiful system. I do not believe threats are necessary, as you are surely smart enough to understand what will happen if you do talk.” The men appeared nervous, and they should be. A god was talking to them after all. Timothy was benevolent, and he would reward them for their efforts. He actually felt a little sorry for them by intimidating them. “Rewards for your efforts are natural. In the new world, you will see the value of your minds.” They liked that part. With a wave of his hands, a gesture that Timothy didn’t expect to ever make again, he dismissed the two old men. Finally, he had some peace and quiet, he needed the concentration for what he would do next. Even as an omnipotent God, creating something still required effort, and a whole world would surely require a lot more effort. Timothy knew it all would be worth it.

He drifted into the void. Far away from the Slab. With a smile, he said: “Let there be light”. Theatrics, even with nobody around Timothy still enjoyed them. Then he realized that he could shape better, with speech. He did not know why. His abilities still baffled and confused him, he just knew how to do all this. “Let there be land so vast, that none can explore it all.” And there was land, riddled with mountain ranges, rivers and oceans. Three continents, with boundless oceans dividing them. Three continents, all unforgiving. Beautiful. There were artists on the Slab, continuously drawing landscapes. Their imagination stimulated by the possibility of creating a new world. Timothy thoroughly enjoyed their work. And so the creations of many artists flowed into the world. Shaping and shifting the fresh world. Creating beauty that previously only existed in the minds of visionaries. The Slab became a moon. Timothy rested and floated down to his creation. He wandered around, and touched things up here and there. Unbeknownst to him, a day had passed.

“Let there be life, so dangerous that humanity will never spread.” And monsters formed and populated the world. They nestled in mountain ranges, burrowed into the earth, hid in the woods and swam into the oceans. Timothy was a good God. For every wicked monster, there was one kind. For every dangerous monster, there was one harmless. This was important, for without balance, the system could not function. The innocent were protected, until their protectors came. For all the innocent creatures would otherwise not be able to survive the onslaught of the monsters. They needed the protection, and if there was no man, God would be gracious. The system was still skewered, designed around a missing variable. When mankind settled in, everything would be balanced.

Timothy thought once again about the rules. He agreed with them, only something told him it would take almost all his being to keep track of the intense web it would create, when every soul was hooked onto it. Once everything snapped into place, he would have no essence left to change anything. Not without disconnecting everyone, which would be fatal for all. But he had faith. He would make sure that there was one last thing, infused into the whole world, before he transported a copy of all mankind into his creation. Timothy took a jump of faith and said: “Let there be meaning.”
