《The Demon Child - Awakening》Chapter 1- The Beginning of the End

Whenever I fall asleep, I am afraid that I will never wake up. Because when I do, I remember my dreams, and with that, nightmares are born.

A sky was shimmering with crimson red, the sea dazzling like scales, wind burning like flames. Whenever I fall asleep, I am in a different place in a different world, surrounded by creatures unknown to man. The only thing that gets me awake from the nightmare is…

"Dyne!"

I opened my eyes and woke in a cold sweat, seeing daylight peering through the curtains. Thinking for a short time, I remembered that today was a day I dreaded with every inch of my being. I rolled over and saw a blinding light made from her magic.

Seeing this, I dropped down to the ground and looked at who made that bright light. I picked myself up and looked at her with anger in my eyes as she looked back with even more.

"Get up; you'll be late for source practice!" My mother said impatiently.

"I've told you this, and I'll tell you again, practice is lame- even the beasteals make fun of me, and they have the weakest magic in all of Antrite!" I replied.

Suddenly, I got yet another face full of light from my mother, and I fell over. Next thing I felt was afoot in my abdomen, I tried to throw up, but I hadn't eaten yet, so instead some drool stained the floor of my bedroom.

"Don't use that word, you know it's called source! Now, get up and go, your father would be ashamed of you. You have the mouth of a demon," My mother replied as she stormed off.

I put on some clothes and felt a little ashamed. My so-called father died of an illness before I was born. The only similarity I have to him is that one of his sources was air.

The elemental sources work like a muscle- the more you use it, the stronger it gets. My source is below-average; that's why I don't want to go to practice because it's like torture for me. Humans can have up to three separate sources, and I only have one, which should've made it powerful, but it was futile.

I walked out of my room to see that my mother was getting ready for her job as a shopkeeper. She threw me a lump of bread which I slowed down by creating a small current of wind. I closed my eyes and caught the food in my hand and took a bite out of it.

After I caught it, my mum chirped "Remember, be home when I get back, otherwise more source training, ok?"

"Got it, be back before you or more source training," I said with half a mouthful.

I walked out of the door and made my way to school. For about 5 minutes it was going well until I heard a person yelling "Hey punk!" in the distance while I was eating my bread loaf.

I turn around to see that my daily beating was about to be administered by Frederick. Frederick, the school bully and beasteal was always on me, one way or another. His animalistic trait came from a dire wolf, a mighty and rare beast.

Now, Frederick also shares similarities from stories of dire wolf's, mean and had a short temper. His hair and eyes were grey, and he was about a head and a half taller than me. Frederick always went for the fierce look, so stained teeth, messy hair, and sideburns.

"You ready for a butt whoopin' in source practice, Dye?" Frederick snorted.

"First of all, my name is Dyne, not Dye. And secondly, I have a good feeling about today." I responded daringly.

Right after that, Frederick punched me straight in the stomach. I felt as though my entire breakfast would be torn straight out. But I kept it in and looked at him with angered eyes.

"Good day indeed, but not for you, for me." Frederick chuckled.

After Frederick walked off, I felt hatred form him. Frederick's father is the principal of the town's school- thus we can't attack him for fear of being expelled or worse. But, to my knowledge, he wastes a lot of rumes, the currency we use.

As Frederick has barely any mind to think, he was throwing a silver rume up into the air. I grinned and started running towards him. Knowing what I wanted to do, I released some of my source and caught the silver rume out of Fredericks's hand and parkoured my way onto the nearest rooftop.

"You like my trick; it makes me way more flexible!". I said with a chuckle.

Frederick now with a red face, started to chase after me, and he was catching up fast. No wonder, beasteals were faster than humans most of the time. I jumped over a wall, and after a while, Frederick gave up on the chase.

"Enjoy the meal punk, you're gonna need it," Frederick growled before walking off with his bad temper.

I didn't pay much attention to what Frederick said, but I was happy, a silver rume, this could feed me for a day. I put the rume into a sack I had on my belt and saw that it was running quite dry at the moment. The only other cash that was in there were two crace and five bronze rumes, the silver rume that was added to my collection just doubled all that.

After I while, I settled down and felt a presence looking straight at me. I looked around and found a sizeable black-robed figure watching me. Immediately after we met eyes, the man started to run away from me, so I ran after him. I again used my source of wind and began to catch up. Little did the mysterious man know, I knew these streets like the palm of my hand. After a while, he took a sharp turn right into a back alley. I was about to confront the mysterious man, but he was nowhere to be found.

I looked around, and the only thing interesting to see was an apple tree. I picked an apple off and put it into my bag. With an apple in my pocket and the right attitude, I was about to leave the ally, when I saw an exciting purple rock. I picked it up and examined it, most stones around Daishin, the town I was in, were grey or black. I put the foundation in the little sachet I had on my waist, realizing that it might come in helpful later.

I suddenly realized that I'm not supposed to be here. A secret I keep from my mum is that I am in a part of a gang. We called ourselves 'The Wasted Dullahan', and I was deep in enemy territory. Another reason why no one deals with Frederick also is because he is the leader of the enemy gang: 'The blazing werewolf'.

After my realization, I immediately ran out of the alleyway and straight to school, ready to start the day.
