《A Coder's Guide To Magic》Chapter 6 - The Variables!

The two suns brought light down on the two sitting in the big, grassy crater surrounded by knock-off tulips.

The mysterious boy sat before Otto, a parchment map the corners of which were weighed down with small pebbles lay between them.

His finger was placed around the centre of the map.

“This is Agartha, the capital of the human civilization…” the boy explained.

A small, hand-drawn cluster of homes with a castle in the middle marked the location of the capital city and centre of all known civilization.

“A population of about…” the child scratched his head.

“A hundred thousand people…”

“The village directly south is called FarmingVillage…”

“The one west of the capital is called MilitaryVillage…”

“The village in the north is called MiningVillage…”

“Hold on! What’s with the names?” Otto asked.

“Why does the capital get a proper name?!” he demanded.

The boy rolled his eyes.

“Look…” he pinched the bridge of his nose.

“I’m meant to give you a run-down, not the history of the entire world!” he complained.

“R-right… sorry…” Otto replied.

The boy breathed a sigh.

“What is now the capital was the only human settlement that remained after the collapse of the rest of the world”

“The others were named after their purpose…”

“A few hundred years ago a big war was going on, a rogue group of mages did something that drained all magic from the world,”

“With a magic vacuum that strong, everyone began suffering from mana sickness until they died, this strip of habitable land is the only place left with any life,”

The boy pointed to the small ‘bubble’ of habitable land within the crater on the east side of the map.

“You are here… This place shouldn’t really exist… That’s why I came to check it out, rob it, y’know,”

Otto crossed his arms.

“Magic used to be a fairly common concept before the war, but now most of it was lost and what remains is kept by nobles…”

The boy took out his revolver.

“If you’re rich enough, you can get an enchantment on your weapons, like infinite ammo and whatnot…”

“Hold on! This world has guns?!” Otto asked.

“No, I had this custom-made…” he replied.

Otto breathed a sigh of relief.

“W-wait! You’re from another world too?!”

“Yup… too many to count…” he sighed.

“I was on earth once too…”

“Though I’ve yet to end up in the same world twice…” he remarked with the first bit of emotion since the start of their conversation.

“Alright… thanks for the help!” Otto replied.

“I’m Otto by the way!”

“Don’t mention it… Otto…” the boy replied.

“I don’t really do that whole name thing… I have been referred to as ‘Nameless Child’ in at least fifty-three worlds…”

Otto stood up.

“Alright, Nameless Child!”

Hoping to keep the relatively-friendly person around longer he showed him the book.

“Check it out!” he exclaimed opening a page at random.

“…”

“…”

The boy’s expression shifted into one of pity and disgust.

“Cool…”

Confused, Otto looked at the book and saw the very graphic depiction of a long-bearded man with a twelve-pack posing naked at the beach.

“AH!” Otto cried, dropping the book to the ground.

“Yeah… I think… I’m going to… leave…” Nameless child remarked, grabbing his map and placing it into his bag again.

“N-no! This is a magic book!” Otto exclaimed.

He flipped to another page displaying an even more graphic pose.

Nameless child placed a reassuring albeit disgusted hand on Otto’s shoulder.

“I’m… I’m sure it’s magical for you…” he said awkwardly.

“No! Not like that!”

He kept flipping through the pages desperately until eventually, one of the pictures changed back into words.

“Aha!” Otto exclaimed.

“Look!” Otto shoved the book into Nameless child’s face.

“…”

He was staring at the same old man from before cosplaying a firefighter.

“…”

Nameless child looked up to Otto who excitedly smiled with the confidence of a god.

“Yeah… I’m sure somebody’d buy it!” he said with a thumbs-up before wiping his hands on his shirt in disgust and turning away.

Otto glanced at the page again and saw the image.

“What?! How!?” he demanded.

He ran up to the now-leaving Nameless child.

“Hold on! I’ll prove it’s a magic book!” he exclaimed.

The boy turned to face him exhaustedly.

“Make it quick… Before this gets any weirder…” he sighed.

Seeing his chance, Otto smiled.

He extended his hand forward.

“Teria « Emaxhum 5β « Tag WaterSpellBattery « Orienthum Palm « Terdephum WaterSpell « Mrelsatehum 1β « Tettihum 5 «… Elsete Aqui « Tag WaterSpell « Morfhum Orb « Gurhum 1µ « Orienthum Palm « Tettihum 5 «”

Like before, a red circle appeared in his hand, it began to spin as a constant stream of water poured from his hand for a full five seconds.

“You learned that from some weird porn mag?” Nameless child asked in awe, which in his case looked like mild amusement.

“It’s not a porn mag! It just looks like it when you look at it!” Otto explained.

Nameless child squinted uncertainly.

“Fine… I guess you might be able to do some magic, so you’re probably not a pervert…” he relented.

“Probably?!” Otto demanded.

Nameless child shrugged.

“Can you do anything else?” he asked.

Otto spent the next hour showing off his magic abilities, he showed off batteries, fire spells and even used the inthrude spell to dig a small hole in the ground.

“Still, how do you remember all those words?” questioned Nameless child, his head already spinning from the amount of gibberish coming from Otto’s mouth.

Otto breathed a sigh.

“Well, it’s not easy… but until I get a notebook or something it can’t be helped…” he sighed.

Hearing this, Nameless child’s face lit up slightly, he reached his hand into his sack and pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook, it looked like it had under a hundred pages.

“I robbed this off the bandits just now, it’s meant to be a diary of some sort,” Nameless child tossed Otto the notebook along with a pencil.

Otto opened the page, the only thing there was “Deer diray…”

“Looks like they can’t even spell…” Otto remarked.

“Mm, you’re lucky you got sent to a world that conveniently uses English… Learning a new language is a pain…” Nameless child remarked.

Otto flipped to the next clean page and began writing, Nameless child spent several minutes watching Otto passionately writing in the notebook.

“At last!” he thought.

The page was filled with variables, top to bottom.

“ƒ SetShape Morfhum «”

“ƒ SetSize Gurhum «”

“ƒ SetPlace Orienthum «”

“ƒ SetLifespan Tettihum «”

“ƒ BatteryDestroy Teriadel «”

“ƒ BatteryCreate Teria «”

“ƒ SetManaOutputPlace Terdephum «”

“ƒ SetManaOutputAmount Mrelsatehum «”

“ƒ SetElement Elsete «”

“ƒ SetBatterySize Emaxhum «”

“ƒ ElementWater Aqui «”

“ƒ ElementFire Igni «”

“ƒ ElementAir Aeri «”

“ƒ SetName Tag «”

Otto grinned as he extended his hand forward again.

“BatteryCreate « SetBatterySize 5β « SetName WaterBattery « SetPlace palm « SetManaOutputPlace WaterSpell « SetManaOutputAmount 1β”

He began by creating a battery, as expected, it came into existence.

With no SetLifespan/Tettihum the battery continued to exist indefinitely.

He proceeded to recite the water-creation part of the spell next.

“SetElement ElementWater « SetName WaterSpell « SetShape Orb « SetSize 1µ « SetPlace Palm «”

The water stuck to his hand like a ball.

“…I mean… I wouldn’t say you made it much easier to understand… but hey, I’m no wizard…” Nameless child shrugged.
