《Ehror, The Ascent》Chapter 4

Shouting, the guards were instantly on full alert swords drawn, sweeping the entire room, light made of the different coloured glow of various Ehror energy lit up the large hall. The Director’s eyes took on a dangerous glint as he scanned the entire hall.
“Do not panic my students, it appears we have some unwanted guests.” The Director, he looked like he was staring at something specific however in the direction he faced there was absolutely no one. Rather it was like whatever he was seeing was outside of the room. The Director along with some of the head teachers suddenly vanished, the door was slammed open at the same moment from the inside, however no one had visibly opened it.
Sevyn glanced at Akuuna, who gave her a knowing smile. He had warned her that today was the best chance they would get to escape and it seemed that once again he couldn’t be wrong. The Director and the others directly under him were the main reasons she had never made a move. She was sure that although it would be tough she could take anyone else on especially when the goal was simply escape and with her companions, Akuuna especially, it wont be too hard. The Director’s level of power was quite obvious to her he was the only one even including the head teachers that made her feel almost ant-like in his presence. The thought that she could end up reaching heights like that to fight people on his level excited her to no end. However she wanted to reach that level on her own terms and without the curated bullshit that this organisation, that she finally knew was called The Red Sun, was feeding her.
The other two looked at her as she stood, they were just as ready. Akuuna held 4 fingers up and dropped each one to time down the seconds for their perfect chance. The moment it closed into a fist, the roof of the building exploded. What looked like a gigantic sword made out of a material much like bone had just ripped through it and the walls. The guards had their attention dragged towards the disturbance. And at that very moment, Sevyn and the rest of the group made their move. Angelo used the biggest Nightmare he had ever attempted focussed on all the remaining teachers and guards, normally people on their levels would not be caught so easily in it, but with their nerves at an edge due to the situation at hand it was easy to have them fighting phantoms only existing in their minds, though it would not last forever. Hector noticed what was happening with a raised eyebrow, none of the other subjects had been touched by Angelo to ensure success on the more troublesome targets.

Sevyn expected Hector to interfere he prided himself on the achievements he had attained during his life here. Anything he perceived as defection meant an affront on his honour and a slight on his worth. He stood up with an imposing stance, an ugly scowl marring his face.
“Sevyn!” He bellowed with rage, sweeping his right arm in an arc over the room. “Is this your doing?”
“Only the action on the staff in this room.” She grinned, logically she would have told Angelo to use his ability on Hector as well as per Akuuna’s instructions, but she wanted this fight and besides she doubted he would be affected significantly.
From inside the hall the sounds of battle could be heard between the guards outside and their opponents, whoever that was. The room was in chaos as other students scrambled out of the way in between the two combatants. She would have to be quick she couldn’t lose this chance for her own enjoyment. Akuuna sighed in the background facepalming he had of course expected this, his exasperated face showed that.
The air shimmered gold and indigo from their respective Ehrors before mixing in a kaleidoscope of colour in the middle. Hector charged first in a wide armed attack followed by Sevyn. They clashed in the middle causing a shockwave to erupt from their meeting point. Sevyn had her much smaller hands caught by his and he seemed to attempt to crush her fists. However Sevyn was not so stupid to fight him with pure strength. The moment before the clash she had made sure to shift her stance as to have him slightly imbalanced towards her. His push was top heavy and the slight imbalance forced him over her as she went for a throw. Hector was no pushover however, he already had one hand to the ground as he was flipped over her shoulder and tumbled disturbingly gracefully for his size into a combat stance facing her.
Sevyn grinned as her excitement grew and her bloodlust filled the air. Unlike most others Hector was unfazed when met with the hunger of a mad beast, after all he had faced her several times before. What looked like liquid metal gold was forming in the air creating gauntlets that covered his hands as he charged in a boxer’s pose. Fast punches moving at speeds beyond what the human eye could track and leaving blurs through the air blazed at her. Sevyn was in full evasive mode, dodging everything thing he threw at her. At a critical moment after an especially wide swing the ground shook under an invisible pressure that formed around her. Nearby wooden chairs fell and were crushed under the increased mass. Hector stumbled to the ground and Sevyn took the opportunity to go in for an attack, however it was a feint Hector suddenly swung back upwards. But Sevyn was ready for it, diverting his fist with a palm to the side of arm as she barely moved. Before landing a punch on his gut, sending him a meter up despite the increased gravity.

“Nice try there, I had used that move on you several times and it pretty much always worked but I always knew you were smarter than that and chalked it up to pride.” She sent a kick to the side of his ribs which got blocked with a liquid metal that appeared out of nowhere. “If you did not grin right before you stumbled maybe that feint would have worked.”
Akuuna signalled her with a finger, time was up. Conveniently a large section of the stone roof broke apart and fell towards their spot. Sevyn dodged out of the way as it landed right on top of Hector. She doubted that was enough to injured him significantly. She turned to see Gael clash with the white-haired girl, Maria eyes still closed but a hint of anger on her normally expressionless face. Tendrils of darkness from the shadows were attempting to get through his ice shards.
“We are leaving.” She said loud enough for both Gael and Angelo to hear. Gael disengaged, freezing the floor between him and his opponent before backing off to the rest of the group. The fighting outside was getting more intense. In fact the entire facility seemed to be shaking and the roof was falling apart in greater frequency. She had been able to restrain her normally all encompassing bloodlust due to having already been prepared to do so before hand and before it came back with a vengeance they needed to leave. Gael grabbed Angelo who was swaying slightly from exhaustion and dashed towards her.
“You guys go on ahead, there is something I need to do.” Akuuna said as they reached the door. Sevyn glanced at him, the instant their eyes met she knew it would be a while before they would meet again, a gnawing feeling gripped her chest. To stop him from leaving no matter what. She gripped that feeling with her all her willpower and pulled it back. Akuuna noticed her struggle with a slight smile on his lips.
“See you on the other side Tyrant.” He nodded pointing in a direction outside the door before another convenient large piece of the roof separated him and the group. Gael did not spare a second glance and continued out of the door with Angelo looking longingly behind them. Sevyn looked back once more, before following. She looked around the guards of The Red Sun were distracted with whoever their attackers were. Men clad in black armour, white emblems of a skull decorated it and skull shaped helmets added to their daunting figures. They held swords, polearms and weird long weapons with and guns. The guns fired Ehror enhanced rounds in quick succession obliterating walls and Red Sun guards with ease. Apparently the Red Sun members did not have these weapons themselves and fought back with various abilities but their opponents had abilities of their own. It was looking pretty one sided. That was until one of the head teachers landed on a group of their enemies turning them into a red mist and cracking the ground in the process. She stood up lifting a large hammer with an anvil like head her red robe flowing in the wind before charging into more of the enemy.
Sevyn and her group tried to avoid the fighting. Sneaking towards the one and a half metre thick wall of stone and steel that surrounded the facility in the direction that Akuuna had pointed. A lot of subjects in the past had tried to escape these walls, unable to take the pain of experimentation any longer. In a way the loss of their lives had also relieved them of said pain. A sudden bang drew her and her companions’ attention to the sky and she could see the director in the air standing on what looked like a cloud and held an oversized smoking pipe in both hands, it’s bucket sized chamber pointing diagonally downwards. He stood in front of a well-dressed man in a black long coat and holding a black walking stick he was also standing in the air with no visible means of support. She couldn’t make his face out as they were a couple hundred metres in the air. They seemed to be talking for a moment before they both disappeared. A bang similar to the one earlier shook the facility followed by several more.
Sevyn was mesmerised, she had always known that the Director was incredibly strong but had never seen it. It was like a natural disaster she had read in some books. She couldn’t help but want that, that level of power so that she could…so that she could what? Having power was something that seemed natural to her. The power to move the world itself. Gael shook her shoulder shaking her from her errant thoughts. They approached the wall.

Note to Reader: I understand this book is not for everyone, if there is a writer that can write to please everyone, I have never heard of them. The MC can be frustrating in his decisions as he learns to grow and accept what and who he is. I believe this reality is unavoidable. That being said, if you feel the need to give a review, please do so, just know that I will report you if all that review seems to do is blab toxic language and insult my literary choices without giving constructive advice or alternatives. That's not just a me policy, that's a policy of this website. I'm not writing this note because I'm a writer who does not acknowledge that there are faults in my work. I know there are. That's what happens when it hasn't been professionally edited by someone other than the author. I'm saying this because I'm sick of reading 1 star or 0.5 star rated reviews that seem to do nothing but hate on the book because they don't like the story. No comments on grammar, ways to improve or suggestions for better story arcs. Just plain hate. It's not on, and I frankly shouldn't have to write this note, but needed to get it off my chest. In saying all that, thank you to those who do leave reviews that don't fall into the above category. Your appreciation of my work, or alternatively, your willingness to give advice for improvement, is appreciated.

The Designated: Out of Control
It happened quicker than anyone would have imagined. Multiple hurricanes were one thing. People had dealt with that in the past. But, like kids playing dominoes, one thing crashed into another. Areas affected by hurricanes needed resources all along the Gulf and East Coasts drew rescuers and resources away from other parts of the country. When wildfires lit up the Pacific coast and mid-west, those areas were already understaffed. Driven by hurricanes in the Pacific basin, uncontrolled wildfires burned through towns, destroying everything in their paths. Across the Pacific, Asia didn't escape. From the Philippines, across China, into Indochina, and Bangladesh and India. Typhoons and cyclones pounded the coasts and far inland. Widespread flooding forced millions from their homes and across international borders. Mexico was hit hard and thousands died in mudslides as Katia slammed into their East Coast. The refugees fled north and west. Rumours started that hundreds of thousands were headed for the US border. Instead of running out of steam in the southern US, several hurricanes tore up the eastern seaboard, devastating cities and renewing their strength before veering east across the Atlantic. Maria and Ophelia veered east and slammed into Europe, reaching as far as the Netherlands and Russia before finally dissipating. After that, too many weather stations were offline to provide any form of co-ordinated information or warnings. Wildfires in Portugal burned ahead of the storms, fanned by hurricane winds. They sparked wildfires leapfrogging across Europe, beyond any one country's ability to cope. Already uneasy from multiple terrorist attacks over the summer, anti-refugee groups seized the opportunity to stage protests across Europe. Some turned violent as they clashed with police forces. Several governments declared martial law to quell the rioting and enforce evacuations along the path of the storms. Rumour and speculation overwhelmed facts. Unrest spilled over into widespread violence. Then sickness broke out in the displaced populations. Within a matter of a dozen weeks, tens of millions died. In the coming winter months hundreds more would follow. The Designated Project was activated.
