《Reborn: Last Chance to Ascend》21. Heist 2/2

Together with the undead, two of our group remained as a guard behind us as we entered through a hole that melted in doors. I looked around a room lit up by white glowing crystal embedded in the ceiling. The walls of the room were made from homogenous stone that made the walls look like they were made from concrete. They were lined up by shelves containing old looking scrolls and books. Boxes sealed by way seals with symbols of glowing eyes were randomly spread around the whole room.
"We don't have time to open up these boxes, so just grab everything you can and put it into your storage." someone said.
That was all I needed to hear as I started to stuff my [Dymensional Storage] with books and scrolls. I could see the rest of the group doing the same with their storage rings. The whole room was empty in a few minutes, and all of its content was in our inventories.
'This is too easy. Why do I feel like there would be some kind of a nasty trap? Or maybe I am just overthinking it, and church just underestimated us?'
Soon we were backtracking through the stairs back out of the underground. There we joined with a group that went to search other floors of the building. No words were spoken as we continued our journey silently. When we exited the building, I looked around and saw a night sky full of stars. But when my eyes looked at the ground, I immediately spotted few blood stains and burn marks on the ground. "Bang", accompanied by flashes of light, came from a distance.
'Was there some fight?'
My answer was answered as a hooded figure jumped down from the roof. "Few patrols approached the building. We quietly eliminated them, but soon swarm of soldiers surrounded us. They were hiding in the buildings around us. It was a trap. We already have a few casualties."
A mix of emotions hit me. I was happy that I predicted that there was some kind of trap, I was also excited about testing my new spells, but I was also angry that they killed some of my future subordinates.

"Let's kill them. We will avenge our fallen and harvest some XP at the top of that." I clenched my fists before equipping my staff. I rushed towards the sound of a fight, where I spotted few hooded figures fending soldiers. On the ground were laying corpses. Most of them were mutilated and burned bodies of soldiers but, I could also see few corpses in tattered black hoods and a few wearing shiny, full plate armour. Everything warped as I appeared on the roof above the battlefield. "Haha", I laughed as a wide, dense beam of purple lightning and light came from the tip of my staff. It hit first enemy soldiers, causing an explosion, tearing his body into a bloody charred mess. I slightly moved my staff, and the beam moved together with it, leaving a trail of an explosion behind it. Tiles from a road together with parts of dead soldiers. The whole battlefield looked at me, and some soldiers, scared by my crazed laugh and the destruction I caused, started to run away.
Crusader in shiny armour climbed at the roof where I was during the time I was occupied with destroying his fellow colleagues. He brandished his shining sword on me, and a brilliant wave of golden light flew on me. It hit straight into my barrier and was absorbed. In the meantime, I moved my staff together with the beam coming out of it and aimed it at the crusader. Rumbling sound echoes ad my beam hit few buildings.
"Oops"
'At least this isn't part of city where people life'
Crusader immediately repositioned his sword to block my beam, but the explosions caused by my beam were dealing such heavy damage that his armour melted as he died in three seconds while screaming in pain as he was burned by his armour while rotting from a death attribute contained in the heat of the plasma. I felt my mana plummeting, so I stopped my spell.

'Such shitty rewards, I don't need a plasma blade when I can simply use my claws... Wait, maybe I can combine it to create some super cool looking thing'.
I looked at the battle dawn at the streets and saw that most of the soldiers were already running away after they saw how easily I defeated one of the crusaders. They were cut down from behind by masked figures.
"Do not retreat from evil. Fight and gods will rewards you in the afterlife", Few remaining crusaders were trying to stop running soldiers. I took off my mask and hood before growing my horns. I smiled at them as a massive ball of plasma started to gather at the tip of my staff.
"No need to hold back" During my fight with that paladin guy, I was afraid of damaging my city too much. But I already decided that I would just repair the damage later as it is too dangerous to hold back. Hooded figures immediately retreated with a surprising speed. Soldiers dropped their weapons as they ran away, leaving behind their friends frozen in fear. Most of the crusaders started to flee, but few of the more fanatical ones moved towards me to attack. But it was too late as a sphere of purple plasma flew out of me directly at them. Purple flash listened up the night before vanishing as fast as it came.

I wanted to choose rewards right at that moment, but I knew that I had to get into a safe place at first. Looking around me, I saw that road and building surrounding it melted into a puddle of lava. Soldiers were already far away, running for their lives and a bunch of masked figures, some of them bleeding and in tattered or burned cloaks, were standing further out of the range of my spell.
'This makes me realize how strong these dungeon bosses were.'
"We should go..." A masked figure appeared behind me. I just nodded as I felt that a lot of my mana was missing.
We had already dispersed into smaller groups, and I ran with three more people through the dark alleys. On the main street, plenty of people were wandering, looking for the source of the commotion. No one spoke as we quietly ran.
Finally, we reached the hideout, which we entered through the back front entrance after taking off our cloaks, gloves and masks. I immediately recognized two of the person as Rose and Gregory. The third one was an unknown man I never saw before. He had noble looks, with long blonde hair, glasses and long pointy ears. When a door shut behind us, he finally spoke.
"I am known as a Leader. I knew from the first moment I read a report about you that you have amazing potential. But, after I saw what that spell of yours did to church dogs, I will have to change my plans."

Tower of Babel: Speedrunner
Launch day. That was what they called it. The day when over four million people vanished in an instant from the island of Manhattan. The day earthquakes ravaged the east coast. The day a one hundred and one kilometer tall tower rose from the wreckage of the now empty city. The day every screen, newspaper, and smart phone displayed a single message from an unknown source: The Great Emperor has issued his challenge. From the ruins of the Old World rise the Tower. Its doors will soon open, and the great game will begin. A hundred floors and a hundred challenges await the worthy. And to the victor? A Wish of Unlimited Power. Cayden Caros yearned to play that game. His only problem? The Terms and Conditions. A strict set of rules that, among other things, prevented anyone under the age of sixteen from entering the tower. Forced to wait for over two years, Cayden did the only thing he could do to pass the time. He researched, he practiced and he prepared. It would take a lot to catch up to players with such an enormous head start. Lucky for him, he was a special type of gamer. A SpeedRunner So.... It has been a hot minute. I don't like talking about my personal life, but suffice to say I had some fairly bad times for the last couple of years and have only just recently pulled myself back to good health, physically and mentally. I have a very supportive partner, and am put together enough that I want to get back to doing what I love. Writing nerd fiction that I am too embarassed to try to explain when people inevitably ask what my books are about. Still beats when I used to write erotica. Story updates for book 3 should be on a daily schedule, baring unforseen circumstances. The majority of chapters from books one and two have been pulled down to keep with amazon's KU rules. Book one is found here. Book two is found here. If you like the story, please comment or favorite. Each comment goes a long way towards pushing visibility for the story, which means more people get to see it and I feel slightly more validated as a writer. I have a discord now where you can ask me things and I can be like 'no. no. I'm not answering that. no."

Derai knew nothing more than being an orphan, but when a merchant took her in, the world she thought impossible soon became a reality. Monghe, stuck in a school exemplifying strength for most of his life, began to understand what he needed to do in order to be strong instead of weak. Story is mostly about nothing. Fermboi does most of the nothing. Aventina does most of the military things. Bolahulag does a balance of economy and military. Derai focuses on economy. Monghe spitfires what it means to be a typical hero. Hopefully this is enough to give a general idea to people who don’t like going blind aside from the work being purportedly “good.” Who am I kidding, my writing is terrible. I hope it improves though.
