《Reborn: Last Chance to Ascend》5. Stereotipical Bandits

I woke up surrounded by fluffiness. It was bliss to be in such comfort after sleeping in a cold, wet cave only with one pelt. As I stood up, wolves woke up too and dispersed through the cave.
‘They don’t seem to hate me for killing their pack members’
Stones blocking the cave entrance moved by the force of my [Telekinesis]. I walked out and stretched my stiffened limbs. That day I decided to explore more of the forest. But I needed to have some breakfast first. I sat on a big boulder outside of a cave and brought out some meat. Thanks to the power of slowed time, it was still warm.
‘I want something different to eat, maybe some forest fruits or mushrooms….’
I left a few minutes later only with Dark as I decided to let the rest of the wolves in a cave to protect pups. I simply walked forward, going downslope. Somehow I could remember my path back to the cave, even in this labyrinth of trees, so I wasn’t afraid of getting lost. I simply walked forward, going downslope. And in the worst scenario, I still had Dark and his nose with me.
Two hours passed, and we met only a few monsters which we quickly dispatched. I got from them enough of XP to level up. I also raised the level of [Astrapomancy] to 4. In the background was the sound of a fast mountain river. We went in its direction. Soon trees cleared in front of me, and I could see a small river, but with strong and fast currents rushing down from mountain peaks. Fish jumped out of the water.
‘Finally, something new to eat. But how to catch it. I am not really patient enough to make a fishing rod and then wait… Yes, I will use some branches as a spear, and I will catch it that way.’ I grabbed a nice long stick and sharpened it with the help of Dark’s claws. It didn’t take long before I spotted a fish. I quickly stabbed towards the fish with my high agility and fast reflexes. In the next moment, I had fish impaled on my improvised spear. I threw it inside off my [Item Box].

‘Finally, its capacity doubled. Now I will follow the river. It sounds like a good plan.’
We travelled, following the river for another hour. Then I spotted some man in dirty, cheap-looking armour leaning over the river and filling some buckets with water.
‘Is it a human? He looks like a stereotypical mountain bandit in fantasy. I bet that he will lead me to some kind of camp filled with loot for me.’
I grabbed Dark and double jumped with [Sky Foothold] over the river and hid behind the tree. I followed that man from a distance. It took him only five minutes to reach some kind of small camp, with a few tens and a simple wooden palisade. I hid in bushes and watched happenings in a camp. To help me, I unlocked [Enhanced Senses] from CE unlockables.

My sight and hearing sharpened by a large margin. Now I could hear their dialogues even from a distance.
“This week was a good one.”
“Yeah, that idiot merchant was so cheap with his security. We filled our pockets.”
“And that funny sound he made when boss sliced his throat.”

“Hahaha,” two bandits laughed, showing their ugly rotten teeth.
I detected around four bandits inside and two more outside.
‘Seems risky as I don't know how strong they are. Should I unlock [Analyze Skill]?... Yes, it is a little expensive but rather be careful than regret it later. Maybe I am too paranoid. Such a small group of badly equipped people on Earth would be no challenge. But I saw animals with special abilities. And it would be foolish to assume that I am and only one with powers here. Yeah, let’s unlock it. It would be useful in the future too.’

‘Wow, these guys are so weak for their levels. Their talents must be in the lowest classes. I guess it makes sense as no one strong would be working as a regular bandit. I would bet that most talented people have huge wages and work for governments, nobles, and rich merchants. Like really, I was stronger at level one. I don’t know if I should laugh at them or pity them.’
In the end, my urge to laugh won, and I started to laugh, alerting two bandits to my presence.
“Who is there?” Johan shouted to bushes.
“Your ugly mum!” came my taunting reply from bushes.
“You bitch I will make you regret this when I catch you!” now angry, Johan grabbed a bow from his back and prepared an arrow.
Meanwhile, his friend drew a sword out of his sheat and started to approach the bushes.
I could end both of them with [Death Flame Firebomb], but I wanted Dark to get some XP, so I threw regular [Death Flame Fireball] into warrior bandit. It flew directly at him, and he was too slow to dodge. Purple flames engulfed him and damaged his body so heavily that only pieces of bones and ash remained out of him. At the same time, Dark sneaked around the bushes and jumped on the ranger. He swiftly tore his stomach and neck. Geyshir of blood erupted from the neck artery and turned ground around him red.

Behind the barricade, loud voices were arguing.
“Boss, what should we do?”
“Let’s fight. That bitch definitely ran out of mana after such spell.”
“Yeah! Leats teach her some respect, boys!”
‘These are stupid as my shoes. How they can be such stereotypical bandits. I almost forget about my newly crafted spell due to their idiocy.”
I channelled a considerable amount of mana into my spell. A ball of purple-coloured plasma started to form in my hand. It kept growing in size and brightness. Sweat began to form on my forehead as it took a lot of effort to control something as unstable as plasma, even with the help of the system. A few seconds later, it finally grew big enough, so I released it towards the palisade. It flew at high speed, leaving a trail of burned grass behind it. The next moment it reached palisade, and a big bright purple flash followed by screams of pain temporarily blinded me.

‘Finally magic school for death attribute. Ohh, this one is blue, so I guess it is a rarer or higher tier.’
Suddenly arrow flew towards me, so I slightly change its trajectory with [Telekinesis]. I looked for the origin of that arrow. A massive chunk of the palisade was replaced by a crater made by the evaporation of soil. A wave of heat even caused the nearby tent to catch on fire. The only reason why grass didn’t catch fire was that it disintegrated under the effect of death attribute in plasma. Four men were behind a hole in the palisade. Their skin was red with black stain and covered with occasional blisters. Two of them were on the ground, crying in pain. They were visibly heavily burned by a heatwave.
‘It looks like they survived. How are they even standing with such burns?... Probably the effect of vitality stat.’
“You are the devil! You will suffer in hell as every user of black magic!” come from big muscular men together with saliva flying out of its mouth. He had a big club in his arms. The second standing man was tall black hared with a massive longbow.
I quickly analysed that muscular man.

‘This makes no sense. When that heatwave caused only this little damage, why are they lying on the ground? Maybe trap?’
I analyzed one of the bandits on the ground and found out that they lost much more hp.
‘It looks like I little overestimated their intelligence. So maybe the difference in distance? Or maybe some skills?’
Another arrow flew on me. This time I avoided it with a swift step to the side.
I had enough of them. Tendrils of purple lightning gathered around my arms, and I focused them into two rays of focused lighting. Beams rushed towards my enemies. Bowman tried to dodge, but the beam was too fast. He was hit into the chest, causing massive internal damage. The second beam flew towards the bandit leader. He was hit into the centre of his chest. His skin glowed up for short moments in orange light. He survived but was panting in pain. One of the bandits on the ground recovered in the meantime enough to stand up. Only to get attacked by Dark from behind.

‘This fight was much easier than that against wolves. Their levels were so high, but they were still weaklings. But what else to expect from the bottom of human society. I shouldn’t get complacent. I will check that lass later. I need to loot this place first.’ I will check that class later.
I started to search through their camp. I walked into the nearest tent and found some stinky clothes which I didn’t even touch. In the next tent were some food supplies, consisting of vegetables and dried meat. My eyes immediately shined when I spotted the most important material ever. Old good salt. All of it ended up in my [Item Box]. Finally, I walked toward the biggest, presumably leaders, tent. I searched with disgust through the chest with clothes and found a pouch with coins.
‘These may be useful in the future. The road must be somewhere close by. Still no need to get in touch with humans for now. ‘
There was also a few boxes of wine. I took only a few bottles as I didn’t have space for more alcohol currently.
We left a camp immediately when I was done with looting as there was a danger of someone coming there. Soon I jumped over the river with Dark in my arms.
‘I should clean myself. I am sticky and sweaty.’
Without any further ado, I started to undress before jumping to the river. Cold and refreshing water began to wash my body. The stream was powerful enough to drown normal humans from the earth, but it was just a comfortable massage for me. I crouched to allow water to clean my upper body too. It was icy but still comfortable. Then I grabbed my dirty and tattered clothes and washed them too.
Meanwhile, dark was waiting on a river shore, watching for any dangers.
“I think you need a bath too.”
I came out of the river and grabbed Dark, who had a funny expression on his wolf face, before going back to the river. We spent another five minutes in the river before coming out, where I dried us and my clothes with [Dry]. I used that time to check what is this class about

The Cyclical Nature of Time
A girl’s life ends unexpectedly early, or so it would seem. Instead of eternal nothingness, she wakes up in an empty valley with no clue how she got there. Taking her predicament in stride, she sets out to do something about it. Unfortunately for her, the first couple of people she meets aren’t much help. They claim they haven’t heard of electricity and dress as if they were on a break from their job at a Viking-themed amusement park. MC is a somewhat normal girl. She's pragmatic and not very angsty. The story is tagged with anti-hero, but to be clear, she is not a villain. She does good if she can, she just isn't morally motivated to do so. The story starts out smelling of fantasy but will eventually shift towards sci-fi. It contains some supernatural elements and has a strong lead, but it is not your usual power trip. Expect a story that takes its time, but not to the point where entire chapters are spent on mindless chit-chat. I’m not into that. This is my first serious attempt at writing and I've learnt a lot writing this. Unfortunately, that shows. Chapter 1-10 is slow and rather pointless. Things get better, but it is not until chapter 25 or so that I began understanding how to structure chapters and to make them support the larger story. I publish about 3000 words a week (every sunday) but I write about 10000 words a week. Sticking to that pace, which is easy, the last chapter will be out by July.
