《Struggle》Prologue

“Turn to page 157 class”, Coach Johnson states to those who are listening.
I prop my head up with the palm of my left hand and face towards the front of the room, making eye contact with the teacher. I have to at least act like I’m paying attention so I don’t get singled out and called upon. Sigh. In the meanwhile, I sneak up headphones from my pocket, up my shirt, and around the back of my neck, content with some background music to listen to. My right hand silently mashes a and b on the gameboy sitting in my lap and my first period setup is complete. Happily now, I look out the window and daydream of life after school.
Rain clouds sit close to the bottom of the horizon, foretelling of the days weather. The shapeless rain clouds do look a bit different though, they have no density, shaded only in the color of a dark gray. I stare out the window longer than I probably should, my gaze stuck. Am I hallucinating this? Clouds do not move this fast. I hear muted voices directed at me in the background but It does not deter me, my eyes now glued to the scene. This grey mass of color has moved too intelligently, becoming evenly spread throughout half the sky. When looking closer, you can see no light passing through, the light seemingly being absorbed by it’s grayness..
A slam on my desk wakes me up from my thoughts as I turn around with a jump and a yelp. The teacher and class now glare at me with smiles of mockery. “Listen Mae, you can’t be dozing off in -”. But before another sound is made, the world became plunged in absolute darkness, time now sitting at a standstill.

Epoch: An NPC's Tale
Epoch is a slow-burn LitRPG/Gamelit novel that tells the story of Luke, later named Lucius—a natural inhabitant of the game-like realm of Elyssia where thousands upon thousands of detached, virtually unkillable entities known as the Players were suddenly introduced right after the dusk of the magnificent Age of Heroes. Shortly after the Players arrived, the balance of power in Elyssia instantly shifted. Kingdoms fell, wars were waged, alliances between races were made, and Lucius, after ten years of training in captivity, found himself being used as a pawn in a prophecy that he had no intention to fulfill. With aspirations and desires of his own, Lucius must find a way to cautiously adapt to the drastic changes in the very foundations of the realm after being sent 300 years into a future that was forever altered by the outcome of the war that his captors had lost and the Players won in a victory that resounded throughout the ages, all for a terrible price. Author's Note As an avid fan of the LitRPG genre myself, I wrote this novel with character progression, heavy Gamelit elements, and some degree of world-building in mind. If you like these, please feel free to give this novel a try. Oh, and the MC is also an NPC, in a sense. And wait, isn't this also an isekai story? Well, it's all a bit complicated to explain here. Maybe you should start reading now?
