《Man from the machine》Chapter 1.2 : Toddler

Fall, age 0.
This world is weird.
I can understand what they say perfectly, as though they were speaking perfect English. I wouldn't know why, but I can. I can't speak yet, when I try weird noises come out, but I try and practice that by myself.
I have no idea when children are supposed to start talking, and I don't want to make it seem like i was too weird. I already stand out plenty after all...
While I am certainly a human baby, my parents are absolutely not.
First of all, they have blue scales, not unlike a lizard. Their eyes don't look like human eyes either. Sure, it is a small difference, but they still felt.. off..
Even so, they are beautiful. A clear emerald green that almost glow in the dark.
Their hair is the same beautiful green as their eyes, but only on the outside, so to speak. It's hard to explain, but whenever their hair moves, you can spot a different color glimpsing out. On the inside, my father's hair is red, and my mother's hair is blue. It's a lot easier to spot on my mother, because her long hair flutters in the wind from time to time. I can only spot it on my father when he touches his hair.
And they both have a tiny green lizard on their shoulder all the time. Every now and again, it would climb on their head, which doesn't seem to bother them at all. It's a weird kind of lizard, it doesn't look like any species I have ever seen. It's neck is flat, along with it's body, and it has tiny glowing pearls embedded in it's skin in neat rows along it's flank. At the same time, it has interdigital webbing, six legs, and a long flat tail. It looks quite peculiar.

My parents both have these weird lines under their chins. Looks like some kind of scar, but they both have them so maybe it's a ritualistic thing. I really hope they don't intend to give them to me when I get of age or something.
Clearly, I was adopted. Not that it matters to me. The logical answer as to what happened is that I had somehow died and was resurrected into this world, which clearly isn't the same as the one I knew.
And that terrifies me. I never really dreamed about suddenly waking up in a magical world, fighting dragons and rescuing princesses. I just wanted to be left with my tinkering. I had finally found my passion, and now I had to give it up completely because this world had no computers! What damned bad luck is this?!
Sigh.. At least I could try to invent electronics. There doesn't seem to be any electrical lamps, so either my parents lives in a very remote village, or no one knows about it.
However, they don't use torches either. They use some kind of stone that glows a lot when they touch it. So they can't be too poor. Cooking is handled using some kind of stove, but it doesn't seem to use fire. In fact, I haven't see fire in the house at all. Not a single time.
I have plenty of spare time, but nowhere to go. The house is on an island, in the middle of an archipelago. The other islands I can see also seem to have houses, most of them several. But ours is small, and only contains our house. Whether that is a sign of poverty or wealth, I don't know. Nor do I really care. As for what my parents do for a living, I have no idea. My father would take a boat somewhere every day, and sometimes my mother is be gone for days on end with no warning, my father staying behind to take care of me.

So I'm sitting here looking out over the water. I started crawling quite a while back, which was a relief, being stuck in that crib was suffocating. Haven't gotten out by myself before now though, the door is usually closed. I can see my reflection in the water. I look somewhat the same as before, as much as you can as a toddler, but my hair and my eyes are way different. My hair is jet black, and my eyes are a mix between a deep blue and amethyst.
``What are you doing outside?''
Well I'm sitting woman, can't you tell?
``Silly little Nathan, you should not be outside. What if you fall into the water, you cannot swim yet.''
She says as she picks me up
Her embrace is as comforting as always .She takes me inside and put me down on the floor. There wasn't much to do anyways, though the view was nice. The sea is a mix between emerald and azure, and I could see large fish swimming around in it. Hope she'll take me out at night again though, she does that every now and again.
God I love that. I was never much of a star gazer, but the night sky in this world is phenomenal. Not only are there two moons, but there are planetary rings as well, which is just mesmerizing to look at from below on a starry night. And the corals at the seabed would glow at night, in all colors of the rainbow, same with some of the fish.
But the best part is the twilight, just as the stars come out. It is breathtaking. I could stare it it for hours, but it always ends so quickly.
Even if I hate the fact that I'm stuck in this world, I am grateful for that.
