《Reign of Darkness》20 Chapter

The first thing I noticed when I woke up was that my body felt heavy. I opened my eyes to find Lisa sitting on my stomach looking at me with a sheepish grin. Crap I let my guard down thinking she won’t attack us when we were asleep and now she’s doing just that.
I tried to sit but she pushed me down, placing a finger on her mouth and looking me in the eyes she said “Shues.. You’ll wake up her. I just wanted to have some fun. Judging by this, you seems to be excited as well and are ready to go” She glided her finger at my crotch.
I got goosebumps all over my body, throwing her off me I stood up quickly.
“Ouch… Now don’t be impatient, it’s no good to be rough from the start” she said smiling at me.
Elena woke up from the noise and asked in panic “What’s happened, are we being attacked?”
“Nothing, Lisa woke me up and I mistook her for some animal and pushed her away” I said to Elena in a flustered tone, hiding the reaction in my bottom.
“What a letdown and I was hoping to enjoy myself first thing in the morning” Lisa said in a disappointed tone. Crap, this woman is dangerous in more than one way.
I went outside the cottage to clam myself. My heart was beating hard and I somehow felt violated. I stood there outside looking at the forest. It was really beautiful to look at, the morning rays coming from the forest like divine light making way through obstacles. The wolf’s corpse I brought yesterday was missing; maybe some animal dragged it away. Why did Lisa made me carry the corpse here anyway, I was able to find the answer to my question sooner than I thought.
I went a little further to explore our surroundings and came across what looked like a circle with complex patterns and symbols drawn in blood. I found six such circles surrounding the boundaries of the cottage. After walking a bit more and finding nothing else I returned to the cottage to get some answers.

Once inside, I heard Elena chatting with Lisa in what looked like a small kitchen. I sat in the corner looking at them while both women prepared the breakfast. After eating Lisa asked Elena to take a bath with her, it seems there was a river nearby. I didn’t want Elena be out of my sight, but she was a girl and I can’t be around her when she takes a bath.
“What is this…. You look like you want to peep on us” Lisa said looking at the complicated expression on my face.
“What, No! I was just thinking whether it would be safe to bathe in the river” I exclaimed, this woman was hell bent on trampling my image.
Both of them left the cottage and I sat there contemplating whether it was good idea to follow this woman to her house.
I took the demonic book and started reading again. What interested me was the topic, practical ability to manipulate demonic power. Most of the beginners column were filled with theories and small ways to test the conformance of the powers but as I skipped to the advanced column, I came across a ranged attack power called dark pierce which used energy to create arrows of darkness to strike multiple enemies.
Earlier I confirmed that I was not possessed by any demon with the help of the book, but still it didn’t explain the black globe which was absorbed by my body every time I kill something. I still felt some kind of connection to the demonic book so I thought of trying out this dark pierce attack. I went outside and positioned myself before a tree; I followed the instructions stated in the demonic book. Closing my eyes I concentrated on the boundless darkness in front of me, I imagined the darkness taking over me and felt something envelop my entire body. I slowly opened my eyes and saw that I was covered in translucent layer of black light. I concentrated on the tree before me and started chanting the words mentioned in the book but before I could even complete half the chant, a big black light emerged out of nowhere before my body and pierced it’s way though several trees with a loud noise as it made its way into the forest. Immediately I felt my body lighten and fell on my knees. Before I could make out what had happened, I lost my consciousness.

I woke up to find myself sleeping on the bed and Elena seated beside me on a chair.
“How are you feeling now” She asked me with a worried expression.
“I guess I am alright” I said to her and she relaxed a little. She was wearing a beautiful blue dress which made her look gorgeous. The dress looked really expensive.
I checked my pocket and sure the Demonic book was gone.
“Elena, did you take my book. It was bound in red color cloth” I asked Elena.
“Here it is. It was interesting to read but too troublesome to practice” Lisa tossed me the book.
I checked the Demonic book and made sure that everything was fine. I was surprised that Lisa gave it back to me even after studying it; she was rather clam about it.
“So you are a demonic mage, what is the demon that you are contracted with?” Lisa asked me with a quizzical look.
“I didn’t enter into contract with any demon. I came across the book a few days ago and was curious about it.” I said to her truthfully.
“Elena told me all about your circumstances, but don’t think that a witch could mistake demonic powers for something else. You flattened half a kilometer area and still expect me to believe that it’s not demonic power. It was mistake to save you in the first place; it doesn’t end well for the people around those possessed by demons.” Lisa said in a serious tone.
“I am not possessed by any demon, I verified it from the book” I said to her, irritated at the suggestion that I would harm Elena.
“Is that so, we’ll see about that” Lisa said and with a serious expression motioned Elena to stay back. Elena had a worried expression and seemed to be struggling with deciding what she should do.
Lisa came forward and placed her hand on my chest. She started whispering something and after a few seconds the marking on her glove glowed white, with a flash my entire chest was clad in bright white light. After a few seconds the white light dimmed and completely vanished.
Lisa breathed a sigh of relief and said “True, you are not possessed by any demon. I verified it using divine enchantment.”
“I already told you so. I don’t know why I am capable of such powers but I am sure that I am not possessed by any demon. I have this strange feeling that nothing is capable of possessing my body.” I said to her.
I pocketed the Demonic book then looked at Lisa with a serious expression and said “Now that you know about us and its clear that I am not possessed. I think we also have the right to receive some explanations. Why a women such as yourself lives in middle of the forest. What was the power you used yesterday to chase away the wolves, what are the strange symbols that are drawn in blood surrounding the cottage and what do you mean by the ‘witch’ you said earlier?”

I know I told earlier that I'll be back only on Monday but I had free time and hence wrote another chapter, I don't think anybody would complain. As I mentioned earlier, traditional art is my specialty. I was thinking about drawing and posting some art work. Can someone tell me if it's possible to insert art in the chapter and how to do so. Thanks for reading.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.

The Card Thief of Culnivar
Deep with the cozy kingdom of Daeton, among the generation-old farmlands and villages, a young farmer’s daughter stumbles upon a dead man. His elaborate clothing has been torn to ribbons, yet his skin remains unblemished. His face is peaceful, and tucked into the hand lying across his chest can be seen a solitary playing card. He is a Ludum Haeres. The last remnant of a Summoner. Numbered among those few capable of changing their destinies. The unseen rulers of the world known as Vesperia, and one of the most powerful creatures in existence. The woman knows none of this. And so, she picks up the card... This is my third novel on Royal Road, the first being "Beyond the Horizon's Eye", and the second being "The Dawnfire Archives". This story is something of a test in a new genre, that of CardLIT. We'll see how well it succeeds as the story continues. It takes place in a different setting than my other tales, with an entirely new cast of characters. It does, however, contain several ties between the stories. Average post between 1000 - 3000 words.
