《First Bite》22. Growing pains

Ali stood watching as the car in front of her house was easily attached to the tow truck, the men her friend Lloyd had sent to collect the damaged car arrived earlier than she expected and began their work immediately.

From her door the signs that the rain had fallen hard the night before were evident, the streets and sidewalks were damp, puddles were everywhere and sunlight reflected off the drops of water in a dazzling fasion. It was almost blinding.

The day's activities were already in full swing as people rushed around intending to get to school, work and various other places respectively but the only thing running through Ali's mind however was how mad, strange and messy her life had become in the course of just a few days.

An arsonist tried to set fire to the storehouse of her business, which could have gone very badly considering the amount of alcohol which was stored in there, fighting in someone else's home with that same arsonist but not quite being sure how she got there, getting arrested for fighting in that person's home, not getting charged for that thankfully, spending an entire morning in a police holding cell answering questions she had no clear answer to, getting released in the afternoon wearing just her pj's and a coat, walking home just to end up back into a fight with the same man again, wondering why she didn't just call a cab or get someone to pick her up amongst various other things that she only had fuzzy memories of.

She remembered blacking out at one point only to awaken in a dark moor in the middle of nowhere practically naked and close to the dead body of the man she'd fought with twice before.

A stolen car was also in the mix, Ali wondered if it can really be called "stolen" if the owner was already dead and tried to ignore the fact that she fled the crime scene where she found it.

Dreams of a massive talking giant wolf that always seemed to watch her lingered on her mind, frozen plains, fields of ice and snow, a stary sky so shockingly clear that it felt like touching the stars could be a firm grasp away, those dreams then darkened to visions of despair, destruction and death.

Ali woke up with feet drenched in mud,

Blood and who knows whatever else, her entire room was trashed, clothes were everywhere, shoes were everywhere, including the heel of one of her high heel shoes that impaled the wall. Her bedroom window was also open but she couldn't find any sign of forced entry, she reassembled the bedroom phone which had been lying on the floor in a heap with the intention of calling the police but then noticed the three extra inches on her finger nails.

"CLAWS!?." Ali dropped the phone and stared at her now black lacquered nails with a flabbergasted expression, she tried cutting them with a pair of scissors but even that took more time and effort than she thought it would and yielded no results other than a now broken scissors but it at least proved that she wasn't completely crazy.

Now all that was left was to find out why all of this was happening to her.

After her second shower of the day she came back to herself, other than the apprehension over the last few days she felt amazingly better than she had in forever. Ali didn't tend to use a lot of makeup, only on dates and events but one look in the mirror showed her glowing, supple skin with no blemishes and her hair was now a few inches longer with a silky flowing texture that wasn't the mad Tangled mess she needed to comb for over an hour the previous day, the comb moved through now with a smooth uninterrupted motion.

She very nicely tipped herself over onto the floor when she saw her reflection in the mirror was watching her with golden eyes.

"Bloody...."

The reflection was gone when she finally got back to her feet.

Then the back of her mouth started hunting, pain in waves as Ali used her tongue to feel around the inside of her mouth.

The sharp pain was coming from both sides of her jaw, just behind her teeth even using her tongue she could only whimper from the burst of heat and pain in her jaw.

Tears ran down her cheeks from the pain, a migraine soon followed for extra effect. Ali's only solace was the ice shoved into her mouth giving her temporary relief.

The pain ebbed and Ali didn't waste time, she had pain in the front of her mouth for years since her original teeth were taken that pain was shifting like if the teeth were trying to grow then switch back to normal, it hurt but nothing like the steady throbbing nerve grinding pain that had now for the first time in hours eased enough with ice and one half bottle of apple whiskey, taking the chance she grabbed her coat and the key to the house, along with a purse fille with backup cash credit cards and the like and rushed through the front door barely remembering to lock it.

The nearest dentist was not her favourite person of the last six years, Dr. James Adley made a bungle of it when she had to deal with her strange new teeth, he had proven himself to be indifferent to her problem at the time labeling her a hypochondriac for wanting to remove four perfectly healthy teeth from her mouth six years earlier, since that time she had severed ties with him but now he was the closest thing to help and she all but ran.

Ali realized she was moving fast, very fast, at the same time she figured out when the pain spiked again that she couldn't turn. Or even stop.

Ali slammed into a wall at an amazing speed, she'd raised her arms to soften the impact but that didn't help much as she felt her whole body squash against the wall, then keep going as she went through it headfirst and into a hedge on the other side.

Pulling herself out of the brambles and checking for any major injuries and onlookers Ali began walking again she'd made it no more than a few steps when the pain caused by the impact distracted her and she again blurred forward around a corner before solidly impacting into the unforgiving stonework of a nearby shop's wall.

It took Ali a few minutes and the help of a concerned elderly lady who gave her a bottle of water from the same store she rammed into before she could see straight again, when her faculties returned she relaxed and thanked the kind lady before continue on her way to the dental office.

The pain had reduced to a rolling throb by the time she got to the Dr Adley's dental office, Ali figured the alcohol finally kicked in which helped relive some worry, so she talked to the receptionist before taking a seat.

The office was neat, a table full of magazines and different animal figurines in well kept display cases were in little nooks and crannies around the room, they were three other people waiting, Ali barely acknowledged them as a bumb of pain shot through her.

It was the waiting room that was slowly driving Ali up the walls, so much so that she could almost swear that her reflection was back to staring at her from the polished surfaces and glass of the waiting area.

Then finally she went into see Dr. James Adley.

Ali brazenly strode into the dentist office, the long wait, the incessant pain and all the things from the last few days had gotten to her and her mood was at its lowest. She stopped about a meter away from his desk and proceeded to stare daggers at the man in the chair.

Reciprocating her stare the man's emerald green eyes locked onto hers and the two of them stayed like that for a while.

Ali however, was the first to relent as she looked away in frustration, the empty chair next to her was then commandeered as she slumped into it while pouting.

"I still hate you but my teeth hurt."

Dr. Adley sighed loudly and ran his hand through his chestnut brown hair, he straightened his collar as he glanced at Ali's slightly disheveled appearance but made no comments as he dismissed her effrontery.

"... I honestly didn't think that we would be meeting again after our last encounter, Ms. Thornhill. So, will you tell me what is the matter, or are you going to try again to accost me?" Said Dr. Adley as he leaned his thin frame back into his chair trying to act as professional as he could while keeping a weary eye on her.

"My teeth hurt"

"Which ones?"

"The same ones as before but now it's worse than ever."

Dr. Adley performed examination of Ali.

"Ah, It's your wisdom teeth, they are coming out and are going to break through your gums in the next few days so I can give you a shot to help ease the pain."

"Can't you just take them out?"

"I can, once they've properly come out and they are completely coming out according to the x-ray, so just give it a day and take two of these twice a day, if the pain gets worse you can increase that to three but no more than that." Dr Adley said pulling out a packet of medication and just giving her a strip of pills.

"I'll schedule an appointment to remove the teeth in a couple of days."

-------------------

Dr. Adler waited until Alice had left his office before returning to his desk, he'd seen her out before letting his aid hold the next person.

Sitting in his old leather chair he stretched out, with a troubled but intense expression he pulled out an old business card from his desk and dialed the number.

"Hello?, you might not remember me but this is Dr. Adler, from six years ago. She came back....."

"The girl with the interesting teeth came to me today...."

"Yes that's right."

"Her wisdom teeth.... so if you're interested, like before. .... we have a deal."
