《Limits》Chapter 10: Rules & Tasks

The old man didn't stay after he threw the paper at me, he simply left. The list he gave me, was rather... I needed to follow certain rules, and carry out specific. I started reading through the list. There were four rules I had to follow: First. I was not allowed to leave the close vicinity of the village unsupervised. If I wanted to go to the forest for example, I would have to report that to the old man and ask for permission. Second. I was not allowed to bring harm to any of the villagers. This meant that I couldn't fight with anyone. That wouldn't be so bad on its own, but the rule included that I couldn't even defend myself. Third. If I was in possession of any item, that was not used to carry out my task, I will be punished severely. Supposedly they didn't want me to have anything. Fourth. I had to complete all the tasks on the list everyday. If I didn't, I wouldn't get any food. If I were to classify my standing by those rules, I was a slave. I had no way to retaliate, maybe besides cursing at someone. That could end badly for me though, they could simply beat me up without remorse. Of course the rules didn't state I couldn't swear at people, but to some arrogant or short tempered people, it was given they would beat me up. I had no way to run away from this problem, I could only comply with that. Besides, I had my own plans about the stay in that village. I wanted to gain knowledge, strength and maybe even supplies. Although rules stated, I could carry around nothing on me, I could still hide stuff around when I got the chance. Then I read the tasks, which I was supposed to carry out. There was also a map of the whole village, which would come in handy. Otherwise the old man wouldn't include it. First thing in the morning, my task was to bring fresh water to every household in the village. On the map, I could see the well, and around 25 households. Judging by the number of households, it was quite a small village. The Freemount Village I came from, had at least 100 households. The water needed to be delivered before 7 o'clock in the morning. This meant that, I would have to wake up and start working at around 6 in the morning. Perhaps ealier than that. Each household required four buckets of water, meaning I had to do two runs per household. Of course provided I took two buckets at once. After that, I was supposed to go to thr woodcutter's lodge, which was located just outside the village. My task there was simple, and self explanatory. I had to chop wood for fire. No specific amount was stated, it was only timed. I was supposed to do this till 9 o'clock in the morning. After that task, I would get half an hour of breakfast. The food would be waiting for me at the house I was currently staying at. After the half an hour of break, I was supposed to help the local blacksmith with his work. The paper didn't say what I was supposed to do, but I was sure I would find out once I got there. This was supposed to last until 12 o'clock in the afternoon. With the work at workshop completed, I'd get an amazing one hour break! The problem was, no food would be served during that break. From 1 o'clock in the afternoon, I was supposed help in the fields. The fields were located just outside of the village. More precisely, at the northern side of the village. The woodcutter's lodge was located at the opposite side of the village, towards south. The taks in the fields would be the longest. It would last until 5 o'clock in the afternoon. This was the last task on the list. When I took care of all those taks, I would get my dinner back at the house, and had the rest of the day off. I guessed that, they didn't want to work me to death from the beginning. I expected for something to change either way. The paper stated, that I would start all of that the next day. I wasn't really surprised by all those tasks, I knew they wanted to squeeze everything out of me. On the other hand, this was also good. I could train a lot physically, the only problem was food. I only got two meals everyday, and I was already weak. I checked the map again, and found a small river just outside the village. 'If there are fishes inside that river, I can try and catch some. With additional meals, my hunger should pose no more problems' I thought. The problem was, I had no weapons or tools. I would have to create a fishing rod or net, then use that to fish after my day's work. 'If I manage to catch a few fishes everyday, my food situation would improve by a lot' I thought. Sure, I couldn't carry around anything on me, but what if I fished and ate all my food outside the village? I wouldn't need to carry the fishing tool with me either, I could simply hide it somewhere at the river. What could they tell me in such a case? I would have nothing on me, so they couldn't carry out any punishments. 'If I pick up a pebble from the road, would that mean I have something on me? That would be absurd even for them. As long as I don't carry anything that is a tool of some sort, or worse still a weapon, I think I should be fine' I thought. I wasn't sure, so I would need to test that later. I wasn't naive anymore, and I knew someone would monitor me. Even so, I wouldn't steal anything. I would only use whatever I could find outside the village. 'If they have any problem with that, then they can kill me straight away' I thought. After one year of that kind of work, especially with the food they provided, I would be dead anyway. My plan was formed, I decided to rest properly that day. I would have to wake up early in the morning, for my first day at the so called new work.
