《Kumiai, Cookies & “Genki” Club》Chapter 13: New class, new atmosphere (and new teacher)

Sitting right next to Minato, Rina takes her time to get comfortable in her new seat, she scrutinizes the first people in the class as if trying to find a familiar face
“Um… So far, no known faces, just new faces.”
It’s always stressful to start a school year in a class where you don’t know anyone. Even more so for young students like Rina who are not used to changing their circle of friends.
“Are you looking for someone Shimizu-san?”
“Eh ?”
“Don’t look at me like that, it looks like I said something stupid!”
“Excuse me Minato-kun, it’s just that you called me by my last name, it surprised me a bit since we’re friends.”
“Are we friends yet?”
“We’re partners, right? So by extension we are also friends! Because of this, call me Rina or I might not answer you directly or make a weird face like I did just now.”
“Haha, okay okay. Rina-chan then. So, like I said, are you looking for someone to look around like that?”
“No one in particular, it’s just that this is the first time I’ve been in a class without Aya and Sophie so it feels a little strange.”
“Aya and Sophie? Friends of yours I presume, is this the first time you’ve been separated?”
“Since we’ve known each other, yes, but this is the perfect opportunity for me to make new friends. I know myself, if they had been there I wouldn’t have even spoken to you hahaha.”
“That’s tough thinking… But I guess your awkward candor is part of your charm.”
Blushing instantly, the face seized by surprise and embarrassment tightens under Minato-kun’s eyes. Would this be the first time a boy pays him a compliment?
“Awawawa…”

Minato-kun nodded as if he didn’t know why Rina was reacting like that.
“My charm?”
“Ah! You’re not used to being complimented on your looks or your personality! Hahaha.”
An unexpected weakness in our exuberant Rina, the poor girl is no longer where to put herself.
Right, left, she turns her head in all directions to find a parade to this wild compliment…
When suddenly something clicked.
“Oh ~ Oohshima-dono, I almost fell into your trap but I won’t be fooled by those beautiful words. Your forked tongue has no effect on me anymore.”
“Um, and why is that?”
“I immediately identified that you tried to play me like a fiddle”
“Really?”
“Yeah, your little shtick at this morning’s presentation may have been eloquent, but I realized I was dealing with a smooth talker.”
“I thought you were asleep when I came by? So you would have lied earlier?”
“Eh…”
Caught in the act of fabrication, wanting to lead the pace with Minato-kun, Rina finds herself with her back to the wall facing her own words.
“Otherwise you can just accept the fact that people say you have charm.”
“Never you hear me, never I-“
*Sliding door slamming*
A man bursts into the classroom. Dressed in an outfit similar to a white suit, his gait suggests a past as a hoodlum as existed at the time in motorcycle gangs.
He walks up to the blackboard, grabs a brand new piece of white chalk and begins to write with eagerness and determination.
While everyone here expected a chaotic writing or a failed drawing, kanjis written to perfection and without blunder come to give a name to the person standing before them.
“Hello kiddos, I’m Onigawara Seiichi, 22 years old. Yoroshiku! Starting today I will be your homeroom teacher and I will teach you social studies.”

“…”
The serious face of the ” teacher ” shows a certain pride following this introduction which is, to say the least, striking.
He whispers as he stealthily turns around.
“I’ve always wanted to get that line out, I gave it my all this time.”
He looks intently at the students in front of him, as if expecting them to react to his entrance.
“Huh? Hello kiddos?”
“…”
*Sliding door slamming (again)*
A high heel hanging from the foot of a long female leg goes through the door and gets lodged in the left cheek of this poor man.
“THAT’S NOT HOW YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF THE FIRST TIME YOU WALK INTO A CLASSROOM!”
This kick worthy of a champion of taekwondo comes to pulverize the pseudo teacher. In the stride, the woman gets up and puts back her hair while putting back her suit almost instantly.
“Hahaha, sorry for the poor show, I don’t know what possessed teacher Onigawara to do that but he wasn’t supposed to present himself that way at all.”
“…”
Facepalm and big sigh from the woman still a little disheveled by her technical gesture.
“Ha… Talk about a first day.”
“Teacher Fujisaki ?”
“Hmm? Oh, Oohshima-kun, yes I’m listening.”
“I tlhink your little show has surprised the rest of the class a little too much, they don’t even dare come in.”
A small group of students stand in front of the front door and watch as their classroom is taken over by a thug and a professional high kicker.
“Huh?”
“Uh…can we come in?”
“Yes of course, please have a seat…”
Rina rubs her chin as the rest of the class settles in.
“There’s been nothing but crazy stuff going on since this morning, and it’s only half the day. I hope it calms down after that because I’m not going to be able to keep up soon.”
“It’s always like this on the first day of school on Kumiai, it goes all over the place.”
“I wanted to take advantage of arriving early to meet other classmates but in the end I would have to settle for Minato-kun… Too bad…”
“Hey !”

Flashback: Siren Song
The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter.
