《P I G S》10. Jaws of Death

I ran as fast as my legs can take me however, it’s faster. Even in a full sprint it still catches up to me.
It runs on its four legs as saliva drips from its mouth as it thinks of me as a meal. At this rate, we won’t make it back to the church.
It’s likely that at least one of us dies here. The longer we run the more I realize that it’s probably me dying. I have no stamina or speed. I suddenly wish that I had worked out more. It doesn’t take long before the bear-woman is at my heels.
I don’t dare look back however, I can feel it right behind me. I hear a growl and then I feel a hand come out and grab my leg tripping me. I fall to the ground hard. I turn around quickly to see her mouth open wide ready to bite off my head instantly killing me.
Just before the jaws of death can wrap around my head a large stick flashes towards the bear and pierces her eye. She falls off me in pain.
I look up to see a hand reach out for me. It’s Ezra he came back to help me. I grab his hand and I start to try to run and fall over. I feel pain in my ankle. I look at it and see that it was sprained when the bear lady grabbed it.
I was probably dead.
I look at Ezra and say in a strange amount of courage “go without me if the bear eats me you will have enough time to get back to the church.”
Although I managed to say that I was terrified of dying. Just the thought sent chills to my bone however, if I was going to die anyway then I might as well try and look cool in my last few moments.

Ezra sighed and spoke, “My granddaughter would never forgive me if I left someone behind. Especially someone around her age. Hop on my back I will give you a piggyback”.
As he said that he showed me his back and put his hand out to support my legs. “Are you crazy! There is no way you can outrun this thing with me on your back!”
As we were talking the bear-woman pulled out the stick and was getting ready to chase us. Ezra in one last attempt said, “Trust me please”.
I listened to his words and thought if I was going to die either way I might as well trust him. I got on his back and just as I did I felt the wind rushing past my face.
This was not the speed at which a human could run it was more like a car. The bear could barely keep up with us, although somehow it still managed to barely follow us.
Were everything and everyone on this island some kind of superhuman? It should be physically impossible to run this fast. As I thought of this I looked at Ezras running form. It kinda looked like a chicken run. It was weird, very weird. Somehow we managed to get back to the church.
I couldn’t believe it. We survived. Just as I thought this I saw the bear lady run out of the forest and into the church area. It looked shocked that it was here.
It tried to turn and run away however, as it did a gunshot went off and pierced right through its skull instantly killing it. What just happened? I thought as I turned around to see a small gun hole coming from the top of the church.
The gun slowly retraced into the church after killing the bear lady. Ezra looked at me unsurprised and said “that was a close one let’s go into the church.”

I quickly responded in shock “wait wait wait, what the fuck just happened? How did you run so fast? Why does the church have guns? Are we just going to leave the body there?”.
He looked at me and said, “I practice martial arts, and the other questions I don’t know how to answer let’s just figure it out later. First, let’s get your leg fixed up.”
Martial arts? There is no kind of martial arts that could ever let you move that quickly. I wanted to ask more questions however he didn’t seem like he wanted to answer. I felt like this horrible place just became some weird kind of twisted comedy.
I tried to put my mind on other things and just try to continue to survive. As we walked into the church we saw everyone with worried faces.
They all looked at us and Annabelle with a worried face said: “Where were you what was that gunshot?”.
Ezra told them what happened and told them about how he managed to barely escape with me on him.
After the story, Amar said, “You could outrun it with a person on you either it wasn’t fast or you have a heck of a lot of muscles under that shirt.”
Ezra chuckled off what Amar said not giving him an answer. After Ezra told his story he asked Wilson a question “what is that you are holding in your hands?”
As he said that I looked at Wilson and saw what Ezra was talking about. In Wilson, hands was a small pink pig.

The Legion of Nothing
Nick Klein is your average high school geek--if you can still count as average when your grandfather is a retired superhero, and you've been trained in the martial arts by his friend, a mysterious, immortal mercenary. After his grandfather dies, Nick inherits the last version of the Rocket suit, powered armor that allows him to shrug off bullets, smash through walls, and manipulate sound. Along with it comes the base of his grandfather's superhero team including the team's jet and trophies from forty years of fighting criminals and aliens. Together, Nick and his friends, descendants of his grandfather's teammates, attempt to bring back a superhero team that was originally formed during World War 2. Along the way they'll face the normal problems of high school (bullies, homework, and dating), and the less normal problems like supervillians and mysteries leftover from their grandparents' past. As a story, it uses the conventions of all eras of comics from the 1940s on, ranging from serious to silly. If you're hoping for a grim and gritty story, this isn't it. The Legion of Nothing first debuted on my website legionofnothing.com in 2007. In that period it's updated more than 900 times, is still running, and has had millions of pageviews. The first two years have been released as an ebook, receiving good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. I hope you'll enjoy it, and that you'll review it and comment. You can also vote for it on Top Web Fiction and rate it on Web Fiction Guide. Member of The Order of Phantasmal Architects.

Chapters released Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12:30 Warning: After Chapter 11, the MC undergoes a significant change of class and race. This is due to a couple of factors. The first is that when the MC was created, James didn't know what he was doing, so he picked what he thought would work. The second reason is that he had access to more information to game the system a little. The premise is like when you buy a new video game and decide to play it without RTFM. After creating a great character and making it to the end of the first act, you realize that, although your character may be kewl, it is gimped and will not survive until the end of the game. Going back to the start, you create a new character with the knowledge you gained from playing the game and perhaps, peeking at the manual.
