《Sisters》Chapter 1

I am drowning.

Rain kicked her legs fiercely, struggling to stay alive, her lungs burning. The water seemed to be pushing her down into its depths. She fought against it, her limbs feeling tired and heavy.

I can't die like this.

Her clothes were weighing her down, preventing her from reaching the surface. She clawed at her heavy boots, trying to take them off. She could feel an undeniable weariness creeping over her. She stopped struggling and started to sink.

I can't die alone.

The dull light overhead slowly faded away. Rain felt her eyelids growing heavy, slowly sliding shut and leaving her in darkness.

You did this to me. You did this to us, your own daughters.

She opened her mouth and water flooded her lungs. It was over. She was done for.

Mira!

Rain awoke with a gasp, covered in a cold sweat. She brushed her long dirty-blonde hair out of her face and her deep brown eyes scanned the room. She was safe in her bed, right where she belonged. She uttered a sigh of relief, though she couldn't relax just yet. She sat there for a moment, clasping and unclasping her hands. Why were these dreams plaguing her now?

Is that really the question you should be asking yourself? a thought rose at the back of her mind.

She tightened her fists, her knuckles turning white. She shook away the thought. There was nothing wrong with her, nothing at all. She didn't need to fix herself, all she needed was a good night's sleep.

Her eyes wandered to where her lightsaber lay on the bedside table. The weapon of the Jedi. She was a Jedi, and Jedi didn't cling to the past.

Jedi don't have attachments either.

Rain glanced over at the bed next to her, where her sister Mira slept.

Identical twins. That's what Rain and Mira were. Rain was the oldest, and as such she had always felt responsible for Mira. Mira was all she had left. Besides, Rain knew her little sister needed someone to look after her. Mira was naive, too kind and trusting for her own good.

Rain's gaze flickered back to her weapon, next to which lay Mira's lightsaber. Compared to her own, it was bright and well-polished. Rain smiled to herself, casting one more glance at her sister before lying back down and closing her eyes.

Don't worry, Mira, she thought, I'll keep you safe.
