《The Night the Sky Mourned》Prologue: 1001 Sacred Tales: The Mother of Men

In the time before men walked the earth as though it was their own; In the space where peace outweighed chaos, and time itself was new. When the Goddess had finished the works of the skies, the seas, and land with the aid of her brothers and sisters... she watched the world turn in harmony… and she wept. The works of the world had brought her such great joy. But now it was finished and she had no works which could understand and return her love. All her brothers and sisters had realms to govern and order to maintain, but she had nothing. She was a creator with nothing left to create. A mother with no children.

As all had done before, she went to the Guru and begged for his wisdom so that her sadness would burden her no more. Upon his golden lotus in the heavens he sat and met her gaze. He looked into her eyes and saw the deep sadness there and knew he could not allow it to go on. He closed his eyes, drew in a deep calming breath and spoke.

“If you so wish, I will give you the wisdom you seek, of how to sculpt your children. I warn you now, that they will be your most perfect creation, and your greatest charge. One Day they may even leave all of us in ruin, but given time they will stride through the heavens as we do. I ask you now, will you take on this burden, will you bear the weight of their choices?”

“I will. By my blood, by my bond, I will bear all the ill they do and set it right myself.”

And so it was that he told her the way, and she set to work on men. Before she could go down to the earth and gather that which was needed, the Guru made one final plea to her.

“Do not rush your work. I know you wish for your sadness to end, but your patience will decide the fate of all things from this day forward.”

With that final remark she made her way to Earth Realm and set about her task. At first she took heed to his words. She formed the men from all things she created with her brothers and sisters: the clay of the earth, the water of the seas, the will of the dragons, the wonder of the stars. All that she had she put into them, their minds and bodies were labored upon for ages untold. And when it came to the souls of men she gave them all of her heart. Everything was so close to completion. Her sadness, her loneliness, would finally be quelled and the earth would have new witnesses to its beauty. She knew she should take her time but her pain was too great to bear any longer and she breathed life into them without taking one last look at their souls.

In her haste she missed the smallest of imperfections, the slightest of fractures that ballooned in her kiln of creation. And for all time it would be so that man had an ever growing hole in his heart, and a never ending desire to see it filled. When she saw them she saw this flaw but it mattered not to her. Her love for them was boundless, and nothing would stop it, not even her own promised ruin. The Mother of Men, was finally blessed with her children… and so she wept tears of joy.
