《WriTE Halloween Contest》Die? - by FelixKun

Thinking about the time I died, I never thought that entering that elevator would kill me.
Nearly a few decades ago, on a completely normal day, I died. It was the most unexpected thing to happen to me. And there wasn’t a way for me to realise it… Until I died.
Well, not that there weren’t any odd things about that particular day. I received a call early in the morning. But I heard only mere silence. Nobody spoke, despite my efforts to unravel the mysterious caller. But of course, I thought nothing of it. To think that call would be so crucial…
Back then, I remember a hard day at work. It tired me completely. I couldn’t even walk properly. My back hurt me endlessly. I usually took the stairs, as to exercise a little. The old office job and my laziness contributed to my weight gaining back then. Hence why I was determined to walk the stairs.
And yet, I ended up doing the other thing. There were reasons as to why I avoided elevators. Besides the whole “I’m fat” excuse, there were bigger excuses. Or actually, a big one. I was simply afraid of the small space. That was it.
And so I entered the elevator. I do remember being happy that no one was there inside with me. Until that person ran inside, out of nowhere, like a ghost. I realised that I didn’t know this person. That I clearly remember.
As soon as the elevator moved, just a few seconds after, it stopped. The lights flickered. A creepy ringing could be heard in the elevator. Both I and the stranger panicked. But then the lights completely went dark and we were left inside the creepy, silent elevator.
Now I remember this part as if it had lasted for an eternity. But the truth was different. It only lasted for two seconds. The lights came on again. And something inside the elevator changed. When I felt endangered and/or scared, I’d look down.

The only thing that was on the floor of the elevator… was blood. I remember it's crimson red colour, as well as the creepy warmth. It touched my shoes and warmed them up. Although fear almost crippled me, I never let out a single scream of fear. I only looked at the spot where the other person was located.
And what I saw--terrified me slightly. He still breathed and stared at the elevator door like everything was normal. I spoke to him, but he never replied. I touched him, but he never responded. And as I tried to shake him “awake,” his body fell on the floor, lifelessly.
This man was dead. My knees buckled as I dropped on the ground. The warmth of the blood could still be felt. I looked at the man, and he…
His arm twitched. I was convinced that it did. That had to be it. I remember thinking that. And it’s not like I was completely wrong…
And so his other arm twitched.
It twitched and grabbed my left leg.
My phone rang, and all I could hear was: “You will die.”

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
