《The Scarlet Knight》Chapter Five: Baby Steps

Caitlin listened as Ethan explained her situation.
"Sometimes, when people die, they're brought here for a second chance at life. The path you choose is clearly a Knight because you've been brought here. Typically, people need to work to regain their memories. However, you seem to have all of your memories and more: This leads me to believe something has changed within the selection process." Ethan said seriously as he helped Caitlin flex her foot. She still had a lot of pain in her right leg and left shoulder.
"So why are you down here? Are you a Knight?" Caitlin asked as he winced and slid her leg back a little.
"I am part of a group called The Order of the White Raven. I am here because a good friend of mine requested my help." Ethan said as he stood up. "We help people like you rise to their fullest potential." Ethan slowly sat down on his chair.
"There is something you have to know. Despite being reborn here, this world is very real. You will have to eat, sleep, and train. Most importantly, the rules of nature are different here. Make no mistake, everything you're going to see is very real." Ethan said seriously. He watched as Caitlin's face glazed over. "The best way for you to learn is by experience. I'm going to take you back to where you got hurt." He said as he pulled a small skinny sword from a long brown bag.
"You'll use this weapon, not the one you had in your bag. This one will allow you to have some space between your attacks. We won't have much time for training, so each day will be packed." Ethan said as he handed the sword over to Caitlin.
As she took the sword, she took note of its weight. This weapon was extremely light, and she wondered if it would do any damage at all. "Why do we have to rush?" Caitlin asked as she slowly got off of the bed.

"When the next person comes, the dungeon gets harder. We don't want to be here when more people arrive." Ethan explained as he handed Caitlin a small red glass.
"Drink that. It's called a health potion. It will heal the rest of your injuries. I only have one, so we will have to be careful." Ethan chuckled as Caitlin took the potion. She didn't think twice about drinking it. If it could help her leg, she was willing to do just about anything.
-
"We will have to find your armor within the dungeon," Ethan said as he packed his things. "We are going to get through this." He said as he gave Caitlin a strong pat on the back.
Caitlin inhaled sharply before following Ethan out of the door. "Your first lesson involves dealing with darkness. You should've had a torch; I'm not surprised you fell down the stairs."
"Something was chasing me," Caitlin said as Ethan handed her a torch. Caitlin watched as he mumbled a couple of words before snapping his finger over the torch. "Since you're a Knight, I can teach you some simple magic. What I just did creates small amounts of fire from your fingertips: This spell will be essential for you to learn." Ethan explained as they walked down the hallway and into an open corridor.
Caitlin glanced back at the hallway they were leaving. "So, was that a safe room or something?" She asked as they walked forward. She didn't remember any of this area. This must be near where I passed out.
"Yes. Every dungeon, regardless of difficulty, will have those rooms. When we get outside, I will tell you about the different kinds of dungeons." Ethan said as they approached the staircase. At the bottom was a pile of bones.

"Wait." Caitlin mumbled. "Is that what was chasing me?" She asked as she kicked the skeleton's head. "How?" Caitlin grumbled. She couldn't believe she was running from something like this.
"Yes. That's what was chasing you. Don't ever underestimate the undead. In this case, skeletons can cause a lot of damage and be difficult to knock down." Ethan explained.
-
“Is there like a book for this kind of stuff?" Caitlin asked. She was trying to pass this question off as a joke or try to. Ethan chuckled loudly. "For as long as this has been happening, I don't think there is an official book for anything. Only some information has been passed down." He said as he turned his back to the staircase.
As the duo continued further into the dungeon, Caitlin noted how the fire bounced around the room. If I'm going to make it through this, I need to pay attention. Caitlin decided from this moment forward to take this whole experience as seriously as possible.
As they walked, they could hear a weird sound. It sounded like something wet was being brought up and down on the stone. "What is that?" Caitlin asked as they got closer to the sounds.
"A slime. One of the most common creatures in dungeons and other areas." Ethan said without further elaboration.
Once they got close enough, Ethan motioned for Caitlin to crouch down. Caitlin did. The creature made her heart swell in a way she wasn't too familiar with. The green slime bounced up and down. It threw itself off one of the walls. Caitlin took note of the small puddles it left behind.
"Since this creature is slow, we can walk around it. Green slimes typically don't attack. However, the puddles they leave behind will melt through your skin. If you touch a large one, you can get stuck inside. It will corrode your armor and kill you in minutes." Ethan said as he motioned to the slime pools.
"Slimes come in a variety of colors and shapes. They're not all so friendly, but to save us time, we will avoid this guy." Ethan said as he stood up. Caitlin slowly stood up. She wished she had some paper to take some notes with. "When do we get to the action?" Caitlin asked as she slowly moved around the puddles of acid. The slime didn't have eyes, but she still thought it was adorable.
"The action will come. The goal of a dungeon is to get loot, gather some experience and get out alive. Don't go chasing action for no reason." Ethan said as he descended another set of stairs.
-
As they reached the next level of the dungeon, Caitlin was taken back. They were looking at a large door with many engravings.
"This is gorgeous," Caitlin mumbled as she slid her hand on the wall. "What is this?" She asked Ethan without taking her eyes off of the door.
"This is a challenge door. Once we open this, the dungeon starts for real." Ethan said as Caitlin eyed the door.
"The gods and other adventures. Not all doors are based on our planet. Some are from other planets." Ethan paused. "If we get through this first area, I'll explain the doors to you in full detail."
"Deal," Caitlin said as she slowly pushed the doors open.
